SUBSCRIBE: - Portsmouth Square (traditional Chinese: 花園角; simplified Chinese: 花园角) is a one-block park in Chinatown, San Francisco, California, that is bounded by Kearny Street on the east, Washington Street on the north, Clay Street on the south, and Walter Lum Place on the west.
San Francisco, in northern California, is a hilly city on the tip of a peninsula surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. It's known for its year-round fog, iconic Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars and colorful Victorian houses. The Financial District's Transamerica Pyramid is its most distinctive skyscraper. In the bay sits Alcatraz Island, site of the notorious former prison.
The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.

Portsmouth Square - Epicenter of San Francisco History
Portsmouth Square is located on the site of the first public square established in the early 19th century in the Mexican community of Yerba Buena, whose name was changed to San Francisco in 1847. During the Mexican-American War, when the Americans were bent on acquiring Alta California, Captain John Berrien Montgomery of the USS Portsmouth was ordered to seize Yerba Buena. On July 9, 1846, the first American flag[1] was raised near the Mexican adobe custom house in the plaza that would eventually be named Portsmouth Square in honor of the ship.
Many historical events have happened at the plaza. In 1847, the first public school in California was erected at the southwest corner of plaza. On May 11, 1848, the discovery of gold was announced when Sam Brannan showed his gold to a crowd. On June 12, 1849, a crowd was gathered at the plaza, demanding election of delegates at the Monterey Constitutional Convention. An assembly was organized on July 16, 1849 to fight against a lawless body 'The Hounds.' On August 29, 1850, a memorial service was held after the death of US President Zachary Taylor. The First Admission Day celebration was held October 29, 1850 when California became the 31st state of the United States. On June 1, 1852, a crowd protested against the purchase of the Jenny Lind Theatre as the city hall. On September 18, 1859, Colonel E. D. Baker delivered an oration after U.S. Senator David C. Broderick was killed in a duel with California Chief Justice David S. Terry.[2]
Director Don Siegal filmed a scene from the 1971 movie Dirty Harry in the Square. As the character Dirty Harry follows Scorpio it is possible to see the stone bridge[1] joining the park to the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco, at the Hilton Financial, 750 Kearny Street.
A marker to commemorate the raising of the first American flag in San Francisco (then Yerba Buena)
In 1987, the park underwent its second major renovation. The first phase involved installing new elevators and bathrooms on the top of the park. The second phase began in 1994, included installation of child play structures, Chinese chess tables, benches, and landscaping. Phase three included the construction of a new community room and play areas. This $3.9 million renovation was completed and the park was opened to the public in 2001.

This video was supposed to go up yesterday for Chinese New Year but I didn't get a chance to upload it. Oh well, one day doesn't make a difference! I posted these last year for CNY as well. This is Chinatown's parking garage and it's a very strange one. The floors count up as you do down. These are Dover traditional with Adams replacements and are bottom-drive!

Dover Traction Elevators-Portsmouth Square PS-San Francisco, CA
PS-Parking Structure. This video marks the beginning of my San Francisco videos. These are some pretty well running Dover elevators. The only thing that's been changed about them are the fixtures (now Adams replacement) These are in fact bottom drive traction elevators, which is really cool, as I've never seen a Dover that was bottom drived. These open right into Chinatown, which is pretty cool. The music and drums were part of the Chinese New Year performance going on.

This Chinatown park usually has a bunch of gamblers and chinese chess players. I caught some skilled jianzi players this day who were mesmerizing to watch. The game is thousands of years old.

Racist San Francisco Sightseeing Tour Guide Ranting About Chinatown
A woman leading a tour through San Francisco’s Chinatown was caught on video unleashing a racist rant during a sightseeing tour.
The guide in the video explodes to a group of tourists in a tirade offensively deriding almost every element of Chinatown’s rich culture, history, and values.
The woman, who has not yet been identified, claims the Chinatown in L.A. is “way cleaner,” has “way better restaurants” and “not as many people,” while intermittently taking pulls from a large bottle filled with an unknown liquid.
“If you are considering moving to San Francisco, although this is the cheapest neighborhood, do not live here,” she says before diving back into more shocking and disrespectful passages in her tirade.
In a statement to KNTV, Christian Watts, the chief executive of City Sightseeing San Francisco, apologized and said he would increase training.
“Comments made by this former employee on her last day of employment are absolutely not a representation of how much we love and support Chinatown, and every other community in San Francisco,” Watts said.
It’s not clear if the tourists understood everything the woman was saying, but in the video a handful of visitors nervously laugh and clap while the woman takes a pause before launching into another rant.
The video finally ends with the group going through the Stockton Tunnel and the woman yelling “F— Chinatown. Go Giants,” before she takes another quaff from her bottle.
On Thursday, San Francisco Supervisor David Chiu and other community leaders announced they would hold a rally against the racist rant at 4 p.m. in Chinatown’s Portsmouth Square at Kearney and Washington streets.
“Community leaders will call on the company and the tourism industry for greater staff oversight and training on cultural sensitivity,” Chiu’s legislative aide, Amy Chan, said in a news release.
Mayor Ed Lee said the tour bus company owes the city more than an apology.
“I do think that they have to demonstrate that they are going to train their employees better,” he said. “Tourism is a critical thing for this city. It was pretty disgusting to hear this ranting from that individual, and I join in the effort to make sure the company does all they can to correct it and to also make assurances that this won’t happen again.”
He added, “You know that Chinatown was named the best neighborhood in the country last year, so how could somebody turn that into the opposite thing?”
