Northern Japan 4 - Hakkodasan and Hakodate
This is the fourth video of a trip thru northern Japan. First we went to mount Hakkoda. We were lucky that the fog opened up after a while. The landscape is beautiful. Then we went back to Aomori to eat nokedon (similar to chirashi sushi but one can select different fish from various shops). In the afternoon we took the train to Hakodate where we strolled thru the city in the evening.

【Tokyo Guide】Old life style of Japan#2(Ueno Shitamachi Museum)
This museum was established to teach future generations about the culture of the shitamachi. The shitamachi was originally an area of Edo* where the common people lived. The word shitamachi is composed of the word shita meaning down and machi meaning town, and one can often see it translated into English literally as downtown. However, shitamachi is not the same as the English word downtown, which refers to a city's central businessdistrict. The shitamachi name originated from the actual level of the land in the area. In Edo, the land to the south-east of Edo Castle (now the Imperial Palace) was lowlands, and the land to the north-west was a plateau, and during the formative years of the city, the lowlands became the place where artisans and merchants lived. This lowlands area near Edo Castle became known as shitamachi.
There were many unique qualities that defined the shitamachi and still exercise an influence over the area today. For example, the shitamachi's high population density resulted in the building of crowded tenement houses called nagaya. These nagaya were made of wood and built very close together, which rendered the region highly susceptible to fire. This living environment bred a people with a unique disposition and way of life. The culture of the shitamachi is the culture of Tokyo's common people, and it contributed greatly to the culture of Edo just as it contributes to Tokyo as a city today.
People's lifestyles change when their living environment changes, and old culture is naturally lost over time. In 1868, Edo was renamed Tokyo and the city began to modernize, but traces of the old ways remained in the shitamachi. The massive destruction caused by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the wartime fires of 1945, and the reconstruction following these disasters are what really changed Tokyo. The 1960s saw a development boom spurred on by the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics, and this era also saw a dramatic increase in the use of electric appliances, all which further sped the degree of change in the city. The initial movement for the establishment of this museum began during that time.
During this period of rapid change the people did gain convenience and comfort, but they began to lose or forget many other things. The desire to somehow preserve these things for future generations was the basis for founding the museum. Many supporters from within Taito-ku and beyond contributed a variety of items, and the Shitamachi Museum opened in 1980.

By train through the mountains of Japan from Tokyo to west coast
A one day trip in April 2014.
From Tokyo (Asakusa Tobu Station) by the Tobu Limited Express to Shinugawa Onsen, two hours at speed.
Then an hour and a half on narrow gauge rail, by a wondrous two car local train (with flower pot in front window at the front and a team of happy retired locals gently sipping beer in the club car behind) on the Tobu Kinagawa Line, the Yagan-Tetsudo Line and the Aizu Railway line to arrive at...
Yunokamionsen, the only station in Japan with a straw thatched roof.. and since 2013, a foot onsen (hot spring bath), a grand amenity.
The movie shows the extent of tunnelling and bridges on this essentially local narrow gauge railway... it's not only a delight to travel this route and look out the window, but also amazing admiring the technical aspects of the line, built of course in a country prone to earthquakes.
We had one day to get away from Tokyo for a day trip and I looked at for possible ways home, rather than just going back the same way. Apart from south, the other way on this single track line was north, to Aizuwakamatsu, and from there the obvious other route was east to find the Tohoku Shinkansen and get swiftly back to the city.
I then looked more carefully at maps and stations in the wild and discovered the Banetsu line running west towards Niigata on the west coast... could we indeed get to the west coast?
I then found this collection of movies of the Banetsu.:
Could we then get home to Tokyo?
So it went like this:
We took the 12.30pm out of Yunokamionsen (an hour there was enough for a green tea soft serve and a foot bath) for Aizuwakamatsu, an absolutely slow slow local, one car, see how it's painted in the movie, still with Japanese-plush-quality toilet, gurgling along for 53 minutes where the ordinary local would take 36 minutes. There was not a lot to do in Aizuwakamatsu, but it was interesting to walk a little in an entirely Japanese town... on this whole trip we saw no non-Japanese, heard nothing but Japanese.
We joined the other two dozen passengers to hasten for the doors of the 14.33 Banetsu train for Niitsu, climbing to share the two carriages 15 minutes before departure. Everybody boards smartly by ingrained habit in Japan, the train does not wait for you.
In the movie you see the extent of mountain and river along the way, rivers widening as we approached the coast, also cherry trees in bloom whereas in the mountains trees were still bare. At Niitsu we hurried with the crowd up and over to another platform, for a 19 minute ride to the city of Niigata on the west coast on an altogether more businesslike train.
Google maps had kept throwing up at me when I studied Niigata an 'Italian' restaurant called Piatto Giorno (dish of the day in Italian). A Japanese friend had rung them to ask if they could meet a complex dietary need for us. Indeed they would we said.
We walked a pleasant 20 minutes to find Piatto Giorno. As we approached the tiny restaurant (most restaurants in Japan are small and special) the chef-owner, wife and two tiny children rushed to meet us. The meal was excellent. They ordered us a taxi, the taxi we paid with the Tokyo train card, Suica, and we caught the 20.19 Max Toki Shinkansen which whisked us home in comfort and steadiness though the mountains to Tokyo. I could type notes on the trip on tiny keyboard and iPad Mini, the man beside me wrote up his business spreadsheet with no sense of shake or rattle. Niigata-Ueno (Tokyo), 330.3km in 2 hours 3 minutes. For the day, almost 750km. Arriving home fresh. Precise times? On the main Shnkansen line, Tokyo-Osaka there are 323 trains a day travelling at 270km/hr, annual average delay 0.6 minutes. Even for first (Green) class, you line up.
The trains from Asakusa to Aizuwakamatsu are private, paid fare, about $100 each including seat reservation on the Tobu express . Aizuwakamatsu-Niigata-Ueno including Shinkansen seat reservation all covered by Japan Rail Pass, as these are Japan Rail trains.

Yakushima 屋久島 hiking (Princess Mononoke forest) - Exploring Japan with Wageofsins!
The mountains of Yakushima (屋久島), a southern island of Kagoshima (鹿児島県), are home to lush forests thousands of years old. Perhaps most famous as the inspiration for the magical forests in the Ghibli hit anime Princess Mononoke, these trails criss-cross the island, drawing in travelers from around the world. These moss covered paths take several days to complete and are home to wild monkeys and deer. This is just a small sample of an afternoon of hiking we did during a visit in August 2016. To get to Yakushima you can either take a flight straight there, or take the ferry from Kagoshima, which you see at the beginning of this video.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer them! Thanks for watching.

Yakushima (屋久島) is one of the Ōsumi Islands belonging to Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The island, 504.88 km² in area, has a population of 13,178. Access to the island is by hydrofoil ferry (7 or 8 times a day from Kagoshima, depending on the season), slow car ferry (once or twice a day from Kagoshima), or by air to Yakushima Airport (3 to 5 times daily from Kagoshima, once daily from Fukuoka and once daily from Osaka). Administratively, the whole island is the town of Yakushima. The town also serves neighbouring Kuchinoerabujima. The majority of the island is within the borders of the Kirishima-Yaku National Park.
Yakushima's electricity is more than 50% hydroelectric, and surplus power has been used to produce hydrogen gas in an experiment by Kagoshima University. The island has been a test site for Honda's hydrogen fuel cell vehicle research. (There are no hydrogen cars stationed on the island but electric cars are run by the municipality.)
In 1980 an area of 18,958 ha was designated a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve. In 1993, 10 hectares of wetland at Nagata-hama was designated a Ramsar Site. It is the largest nesting ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle in the North Pacific. Yakushima's unique remnant of warm/temperate ancient forest has been a natural World Heritage Site since 1993. In the Wilderness core area (12.19 square kilometres (3,010 acres)) of the World Heritage Site, no record of past tree cutting can be traced. The island is visited by 300,000 tourists every year.
Yakushima has been settled since at least the Jomon period. It is first mentioned in written documents of the Chinese Sui Dynasty of the 6th century, and in the Japanese Shoku Nihongi in an entry dated 702. It formed part of ancient Tane Province. It was often mentioned in the diaries of travellers between Tang Dynasty China and Nara period Japan. During the Edo period, Yakushima was ruled by the Shimazu clan of the Satsuma Domain and was considered part of Ōsumi Province. Following the Meiji restoration, the island has been administered as part of Kagoshima Prefecture.

SUMMARY
=======
The Fullmetal Alchemist manga and anime series feature an extensive cast of fictional characters created by Hiromu Arakawa. The story is set in a fictional universe within the 20th century in which alchemy is one of the most advanced scientific techniques. Although they basically start the same, the first anime, midway through its run, begins to differ greatly from the original manga; characters that are killed early on in the manga survive to the end of the first anime and vice versa. The second anime's (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) events, however, faithfully follow those from the manga. The story follows the adventures of two alchemist brothers named Edward and Alphonse Elric. While trying to revive their mother, the brothers lost parts of their bodies, with Alphonse's soul being contained in a suit of armor, and Edward replacing his right arm and left leg with two sets of automail, a type of advanced prosthetic limb. Advised by Roy Mustang, an alchemist from the State Military, Edward becomes a State Alchemist, and starts traveling with Alphonse through the country of Amestris in order to find a way to recover their bodies. In their search, they hear of the Philosopher's Stone, a powerful alchemy artifact that the brothers can use to recover their bodies.
When creating the series, Arakawa took her inspiration from several experiences in her childhood, including her parents' jobs and the manga she used to read. Several types of merchandising have also been released based on the characters from the series. Reviewers from manga, anime, and other media have also commented on the characters. Most of them have praised their development in the story as well as Arakawa's artwork.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
