Originally a frontier outpost, Sacramento is now a thriving metropolis of just under half a million residents where government offices, political positioning, and financial commotion contrast the city's otherwise trendy neighborhood feel. A regular stop on the Amgen Tour of California and Amgen Tour of California Women's Race empowered with SRAM, Sacramento is California's heart and where the 2019 men's race will begin. Old Sacramento - Things to Do in Sacramento | California Travel Tips
Veronica Hill of California Travel Tips offers a guided tour of Old Sacramento State Historic Park in Sacramento, CA. Established in 1849, the Old Sacramento district was formed as eager miners, bankers and businessmen arrived for California's Gold Rush. Today, there are 53 historic Spanish-style buildings to explore, and many have been faithfully restored.
Old Sacramento attractions include the 1851 Big Four House, named for the founders of the First Transcontinental Railroad; and the 1853 B. F. Hastings Building, which once housed the Pony Express terminal and California's Supreme Court. During Sacramento's boom years, miners and pioneers flocked to the Eagle Theatre, which was established in 1849. This was the first permanent theater in California, and is rumored to be haunted by its former owner.
Set on 28 acres and roughly eight city blocks, Old Sacramento is packed with activities. You can tour Sacramento by electric bicycle or horse and carriage, explore the Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum, or hop aboard the California State Railroad Museum Sacramento Southern Railroad for a 40-minute train ride.
Old Sacramento was the terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad and the last stop on the Pony Express. At 2nd and J streets, you'll find the Pony Express Monument, which commemorates the 1,900-mile mail route from Missouri to Sacramento. Another monument honors Theodore Judah, the engineer who helped design the first Transcontinental Railroad.
In 1862, a record-breaking rainstorm flooded Sacramento, causing the city to raise the streets up to 14 feet by the 1870s. Underground Tours are offered through the Sacramento History Museum, where you can explore the legends that lurk beneath the city sidewalks; or you can check out Pioneer Park, which offers a glimpse at the lower levels of the city.
For a unique overnight, hang your hat at The Delta King, which is docked on the Sacramento River waterfront. This 1920s riverboat cruised between San Francisco and Sacramento until the 1940s and is one of the most unique and charming hotels in Sacramento. In 1982, the Delta King was restored to the tune of $9 million, and now boasts modern hotel rooms, a theater, wine school and two charming Old Sacramento restaurants.
One thing to remember — most of Old Town is metered parking, so you'll need some change to park. Change machines are located on almost every city block.

Places to see in ( Sacramento - USA )
Places to see in ( Sacramento - USA )
Sacramento, capital of the U.S. state of California, lies at the confluence of the Sacramento River and American River. The district of Old Sacramento harkens back to the city’s Gold Rush era, with wooden sidewalks and wagon rides. One of several museums in Old Sacramento, the California State Railroad Museum depicts the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, one of the country’s earliest technological feats.
Sacramento is the oldest incorporated city in California, settled between the confluences of the Sacramento and American rivers. It was founded in 1849 and there are many reminders of the history of the city including Sutter's Fort, Old Sacramento, and remnants of the original ground level of Sacramento. It experienced explosive growth when gold was discovered in 1848 in nearby Coloma, and the gold rush that followed was the largest human migration in history. Currently it has a population of 490,000 in the city and over two million in the metropolitan area.
The pace of life is somewhat slower than in other large Californian cities, and the people are generally warm and friendly. The city is generally viewed as being affordable for being a large California city. Once a thriving riverfront pioneer town, Old Sacramento now primarily exists as living historic district. The boardwalk style sidewalks and horse-drawn stagecoaches give this small section of town a unique flavor. Old Sacramento contains several museums, restaurants, and the usual assortment of souvenir shops all within walking distance of each other. Best of all, it's a five minute walk from the Amtrak station. It's best visited in late afternoon and early evening. Parking can be scarce, so be sure to utilize the reasonably priced parking structures in the K Street Mall. There's a nice, short, safe walkway between K Street Mall and Old Sacramento.
Sacramento is fairly easy to navigate due to the numbered and lettered streets, especially in the central district which is laid out in a grid. Numbered streets run north and south while lettered streets run east and west. South of the city center (bounded by Broadway, Front Street, and Alhambra Boulevard), the streets are named Avenue when the lettered streets run out.

Visit Sacramento California Begins Here
Sacramento is experiencing a true renaissance. It is alive and buzzing with new sights, sounds and smells. As America's Farm-to-Fork Capital, it fuses surrounding farms with local restaurants, which led to the explosion of our farm-fresh food scene. The newly opened Golden 1 Center is the heart of a revitalized downtown core that is walkable and home to new hotels and an entertainment district.
It’s one of California’s most affordable and accessible cities, served by 150 flights daily. The soon-to-be-expanded convention center currently offers 384,000 sq. ft. of event space, 137,500 sq. ft. of exhibit space, 31 meeting rooms, and there are more than 2,000 hotel rooms within walking distance. Major hotel brands include the Hyatt, Sheraton, Marriott, Kimpton, Hilton, DoubleTree, Embassy, Westin and Holiday Inn.
While the evolution of this city continues to progress at breathtaking speed, we hold tight to our history, diversity and natural beauty, which enriches our culture and unique character. It’s all happening here and now, and you too will feel the excitement.
