Storefront Church at San Francisco Playhouse
Now Playing Nov. 30 - Jan. 11.14
Tickets:
San Francisco Playhouse (Bill English, Artistic Director and Susi Damilano, Producing Director) welcome the holiday season with John Patrick Shanley's Storefront Church.
Storefront Church, like Bell Book and Candle and Period of Adjustment before it, is San Francisco Playhouse's out of the box response to the more traditional Holiday entertainment. San Francisco Playhouse delves deeper to find the intimate stories that happen to real people during the bittersweet holiday season. From Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright John Patrick Shanley (Doubt), Storefront Church, brings us to a wintery Bronx, where capitalists devour giant gingerbread houses, a disenchanted preacher rediscovers his faith, and a Scrooge-like atheist loan officer experiences a glorious Holiday rebirth.
Directed by Joy Carlin
Starring popular Bay Area actors Derek Fischer, Rod Gnapp*, Carl Lumbly*, Gabriel Marin*, Ray Reinheart* and Gloria Weinstock,*
Storefront Church is a contemporary Holiday story: funny and touching, asking questions of us, showing both the good and bad sides of people but ultimately an uplifting and inspiring story.

Joanna Newsom official bio:
Avant-garde multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom will embark on a national tour. The String/Keys Incident – An Evening with Joanna Newsom will feature her emotively beautiful songs in a rare and intimate concert experience by Joanna alone: solo voice, harp, and piano!
Newsom was classically-trained on the harp at a young age and began her professional musical career as a keyboardist in the San Francisco-based indie band The Pleased. After self-releasing two EPs in 2002, she signed to the independent label Drag City where she released her debut album The Milk-Eyed Mender in 2004. The album released to critical-acclaim, named “The 12th best folk album of all time” by NME, and secured Newsom a dedicated underground following.
In 2006, she released Ys, which charted at Number 134 on Billboard 200 and received a 2007 Shortlist Music Prize nomination. She followed with the release of Have One on Me in 2010 and Divers in 2015. Her song “Sapokanikan” on Divers earned her a spot on NPR’s “The 200 greatest songs by 21st century women.”
No stranger to critical-acclaim, she is often noted for her unique musical style, sometimes characterized as psychedelic folk, and her prominent use of harp instrumentation.

In California lyrics:
My heart became a drunken runt
On the day I sunk in this shunt
To tap me clean
Of all the wonder
And the sorrow I have seen
Since I left my home:
My home, on the old Milk Lake
Where the darkness does fall so fast
It feels like some kind of mistake
(just like they told you it would;
Just like the Tulgeywood)
When I came into my land
I did not understand:
Neither dry rot, nor the burn pile
Nor the bark-beetle, nor the dry well
Nor the black bear
But there is another
Who is a little older
When I broke my bone
He carried me up from the riverside
To spend my life
In spitting-distance
Of the love that I have known
I must stay here, in an endless eventide
And if you come and see me
You will upset the order
You cannot come and see me
For I set myself apart
But when you come and see me
In California
You cross the border of my heart
Well, I have sown untidy furrows
Across my soul
But I am still a coward
Content to see my garden grow
So sweet & full
Of someone else's flowers
But sometimes
I can almost feel the power
Sometimes I am so in love with you
(Like a little clock
That trembles on the edge of the hour
Only ever calling out Cuckoo, cuckoo)
When I called you
You, little one
In a bad way
Did you love me?
Do you spite me?
Time will tell if I can be well
And rise to meet you rightly
While, moving across my land
Brandishing themselves
Like a burning branch
Advance the tallow-colored
Walleyed deer
Quiet as gondoliers
While I wait all night, for you
In California
Watching the fox pick off my goldfish
From their sorry, golden state--
And I am no longer
Afraid of anything, save
The life that, here, awaits
I don't belong to anyone
My heart is heavy as an oil drum
I don't want to be alone
My heart is yellow as an ear of corn
And I have torn my soul apart, from
Pulling artlessly with fool commands
Some nights
I just never go to sleep at all
And I stand
Shaking in my doorway like a sentinel
All alone
Bracing like the bow upon a ship
And fully abandoning
Any thought of anywhere
But home
My home
Sometimes I can almost feel the power
And I do love you
Is it only timing
That has made it such a dark hour
Only ever chiming out
Cuckoo, cuckoo?
My heart, I wear you down, I know
Gotta think straight
Keep a clean plate;
Keep from wearing down
If I lose my head
Just where am I going to lay it?
(For it has half-ruined me
To be hanging around
Here, among the daphne
Blooming out of the big brown;
I am native to it, but I'm overgrown
I have choked my roots
On the earth, as rich as roe
Here
Down in California.)

FOX Theatre, San Francisco- First Anniversary Show film dater 1930 - MAB Archives
From the MAB Archives
mabhollywood.com
Film dater strip produced for the FOX Theatre, San Francisco in April 1930, and run on the theatre's screen in May,1930 to promote the 1st Anniversary of the theatre, June 27th,1930. The original film is silent.
The music in our presentation is performed by organist Tiny James and recorded in the theatre the day before the organ was removed, after the theatre closed to the public in 1963. The theatre's Wurlitzer theatre organ was recorded here by Frank R. Killinger in multiplex stereo for KPEN radio San Francisco while a live broadcast of the last sounds of the instrument were being heard live through the city on the air. Killinger's master tape of this broadcast was loaned to Matias Bombal by Geoff Hansen. Bombal transferred it to digital media and with Chad E. Williams, married the selection to the silent footage here.
Images of the theatre are from Preston Kaufmann's 1979 book about the theatre, FOX- The Last Word...Story of the World's Finest Theatre

San Francisco's Alcazar Theatre - What is it? Why is it there?
The Alcazar Theatre is a 511-seat theatre located at 650 Geary Street, San Francisco, California. The venue is host to many touring productions of Broadway and Off Broadway plays, as well as variety, cabaret, comedians, and other theatrical events.[2]
Built in 1917 as a Shriner's Temple at a cost of $150,000,[3] the building was designed in Exotic Revival style, looking much like an Islamic temple, by architect T. Patterson Ross. Upon opening, the June 1917 edition of Architect and Engineer described the building as an adaptation from Alhambra, a building that stands as the highest mark of Arabian art and civilization. It served as a temple until 1970.[4]
After the Alcazar Theatre at 260 O'Farrell Street closed on December 31, 1961, and then demolished, this former temple on Geary Street became a legitimate theatre in 1976 and took on the name Alcazar.[5]
The structure was gutted in 1982 after attempts to salvage it failed. It reopened in 1993.[6] Standing just west of Union Square, in the city's theatre district, the Alcazar has been renovated combining state of the art facilities with the architectural style of the past.[7]
The Alcazar Theatre was designated a San Francisco Historical Landmark in 1989.

Sadie lyrics:
Sadie, white coat
You carry me home
And bury this bone
And take this pine-cone
Bury this bone to gnaw on it later;
Gnawing on the telephone
And 'till then, we pray and suspend
The notion that these lives do never end
And all day long we talk about mercy:
Lead me to water, Lord, I sure am thirsty
Down in the ditch where I nearly served you
Up in the clouds where he almost heard you
And all that we built
And all that we breathed
And all that we spilt, or pulled up like weeds
Is piled up in back
And it burns irrevocably
(And we spoke up in turns
'Till the silence crept over me.)
And bless you
And I deeply do
No longer resolute
And I call to you
But the water
Got so cold
And you do lose
What you don't hold
This is an old song, these are old blues
And this is not my tune, but it's mine to use
And the seabirds where the fear once grew
Will flock with a fury
And they will bury what'd come for you
And down where I darn with the milk-eyed mender
You and I, and a love so tender
Stretched on a hoop where I stitch - this adage:
Bless our house and its heart so savage.
And all that I want
And all that I need
And all that I've got is scattered like seed
And all that I knew is moving away from me
(And all that I know is blowing
Like tumbleweed.)
And the mealy worms
In the brine will burn
In a salty pyre
Among the fauns and ferns
And the love we hold
And the love we spurn
Will never grow cold
Only taciturn
And I'll tell you tomorrow
Sadie, go on home now
And bless those who've sickened below
And bless us who've chosen so
And all that I've got
And all that I need
I tie in a knot and I lay at your feet
I have not forgot, but a silence crept over me
(So dig up your bone
Exhume your pine-cone, my Sadie.)

Only Skin lyrics:
And there was a booming above you
That night black airplanes flew over the sea
And they were lowing and shifting like
Beached whales
Shelled snails
As you strained and you squinted to see
The retreat of their hairless and blind cavalry
You froze in your sand shoal
Prayed for your poor soul;
Sky seemed a bread roll, soaking in a milk-bowl
And when the bread broke —
Fell in bricks of wet smoke —
My sleeping heart woke, and my waking heart spoke
Then there was a silence you took to mean something:
Mean, Run, sing
For alive you will evermore be
And the plague of the greasy black engines a-skulking
Has gone east
While you’re left to explain them to me —
Released
From their hairless and blind cavalry
With your hands in your pockets
Stubbily running
To where I’m unfresh
Undressed and yawning —
Well, what is this craziness?
This crazy talking?
You caught some small death
When you were sleepwalking
It was a dark dream, darlin;
It’s over
The firebreather is beneath the clover
Beneath his breathing there is cold clay, forever:
A toothless hound-dog choking on a feather
But I took my fishing pole (fearing your fever)
Down to the swimming hole, where there grows a bitter herb
That blooms but one day a year, by the riverside —
I’d bring it here:
Apply it gently
To the love you’ve lent me
While the river was twisting and braiding, the bait bobbed
And the string sobbed
As it cut through the hustling breeze
And I watched how the water was kneading so neatly
Gone treacly
Nearly slowed to a stop in this heat;
Frenzy coiling flush along the muscles beneath
Press on me
We are restless things
Webs of seaweed are swaddling
You call upon the dusk of the
Musk of a squid:
Shot full of ink, until you sink into your crib
Rowing along, among the reeds, among the rushes
I heard your song, before my heart had time to hush it!
Smell of a stonefruit being cut and being opened
Smell of a low and of a lazy cinder smoking
And when the fire moves away
Fire moves away, son
Why would you say
I was the last one?
Scrape your knee: it is only skin
Makes the sound of violins
When I cut your hair, and leave the birds all the trimmings
I am the happiest woman among all women
And the shallow water stretches as far as I can see
Knee deep, trudging along —
The seagull weeps ‘so long’ —
I’m humming a threshing song —

Sapokanikan lyrics:
The cause is Ozymandian
The map of Sapokanikan
Is sanded and bevelled
The land lone and levelled
By some unrecorded and powerful hand
Which plays along the monument
And drums upon a plastic bag
The brave-men-and-women-so-dear-to-God-
And-famous-to-all-of-the-ages rag
Sing: Do you love me?
Will you remember?
The snow falls above me
The renderer renders:
The event is in the hand of God
Beneath a patch of grass, her
Bones the old Dutch master hid
While elsewhere Tobias
And the angel disguise
What the scholars surmise was a mother and kid
Interred with other daughters
In dirt in other potter's fields
Above them, parades
Mark the passing of days
Through parks where pale colonnades arch in marble and steel
Where all of the twenty-thousand attending your footfall
And the cause that they died for are lost in the idling bird calls
And the records they left are cryptic at best
Lost in obsolescence
The text will not yield, nor x-ray reveal
With any fluorescence
Where the hand of the master begins and ends
I fell, I tried to do well but I won't be
Will you tell the one that I loved to remember and hold me
I call and call for the doctor
But the snow swallows me whole with ol' Florry Walker
And the event lives only in print
He said:
It's alright, and it's all over now
And boarded the plane
His belt unfastened
The boy was known to show unusual daring
And, called a boy
This alderman, confounding Tammany Hall
In whose employ King Tamanend himself preceded John’s fall
So we all raise a standard
To which the wise and honest soul may repair
To which a hunter
A hundred years from now, may look and despair
And see with wonder
The tributes we have left to rust in the park
Swearing that our hair stood on end
To see John Purroy Mitchel depart
For the Western Front
Where work might count
All exeunt! All go out!
Await the hunter, to decipher the stone
(and what lies under, now)
The city is gone
Look and despair
Look and despair
