The weather can get crazy in Denali National Park and when we're only inside the National Park we gotta hike no matter what! The Savage Alpine trail is ranked as one of the best official hikes within Denali National Park with commanding views of the mountains and valleys. It's also a hot spot for bears.

Fun afternoon hike with Maggie! She got the better end of the deal and got to ride in her backpack! This is a beautiful lake located near the entrance of Denali National Park. There are beaver dams all over! It is truly a sight to see!

Journey to Alaska Episode 7: Denali National Park Tips
Denali means The Big One and it didn't disappoint. We took a bus tour to Eielson Visitor Center and saw grizzlies, dall sheep, caribou, moose, golden eagle, and at the grand finale, Denali herself. We also hiked the Savage River Alpine trail and took in the dog sled kennels. Along the way we learned a few things that will help visitors make the most of their visit.

Denali - Savage Alpine Trail 2013
I had a half-day to spend at Denali National Park - too short for a bus tour, but long enough to catch a lot of scenery and a few animals on video along the Savage (river) Alpine Trail. The trail follows a gradient from dense alder shrubs and sparse fir and spruce trees to bare rock, then down again to the Savage River - with some excellent views along the way. Trail elevations range from about 850 to 1300 meters.
Denali Park Entrance to Savage River 2018
A quick drive through the Parks Highway Denali Park hotel and restaurant services area, followed by a brief walk to the Denali Park Visitor Center, Book Store, Morino Grill, and the Alaska Railroad Denali Park Train Depot. We then drive the 15 miles from the Parks entrance to Savage River which is open to private vehicles during the summer months. Sorry for the dirty windows and bug splatters we were just returning from a trip to Fairbanks and Big Delta. July, 2018.

Savage Alpine Trail 28 June 2014
Denali National Park's Savage Alpine Trail... GoPro Hero3 taking an auto picture every 30 seconds. 4.4 miles covered in about 100 minutes with ~1500 feet of elevation change. Pictures last 1.5 seconds except for the Subway lunch break at the top of the hike, which are at 0.5 seconds. Hopeless Wanderer by Mumford and Sons overlaid rather nicely onto the pictures without much tweaking. Enjoy!
Walking the Savage River Loop
The Savage River Loop Trail is an easy to moderate walk of 2.0 miles (3.2 km), 1.5 hours, that begins at a turnaround at Mile 15 of the Denali Park Road, with no elevation gain, negligible grade, on a 24-inch wide surface of native soils with rocks and roots. The first half-mile is wheelchair accessible. The trail travels upstream a mile, crosses a wooden bridge, and returns on the opposite side. Highlights include wildlife on rocky slopes.
