[Wikipedia] PONCHO
The Patrons of Northwest Civic, Cultural and Charitable Organizations (PONCHO) is a non-profit corporation in Seattle, Washington, United States, whose annual fund-raising auction has long played a significant role in funding the arts in Seattle. However, over the years, the gala auction slowly ceased to be profitable and will not occur after 2008, being replaced by smaller art and wine auctions. Janet True, president of the PONCHO board, has indicated that the gala auction will probably be replaced by something parallel to New York City's Tony Awards. The group was founded in 1963 to hold an auction to retire the US$35,000 debt accumulated by the Seattle Symphony's critically successful performance of Verdi's Aida at the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, the Century 21 Exposition. They exceeded their goal, raising enough additional money to give $50,000 to the Symphony to help establish the Seattle Opera, as well as $15,000 to the Council on Aging and $1,000 to the Seattle Chorale. In the subsequent 45 years, PONCHO has raised over $33 million for more than 200 Seattle-area arts organizations. Significant beneficiaries other than the Symphony and Opera have included the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Art Museum, Seattle Repertory Theatre, and ACT.Brendan Kiley of Seattle alternative weekly The Stranger, writing on the occasion of PONCHO executive director Gordon Hamilton's forced departure in July 2008, sees PONCHO as gradually shifting from being a deep donor to large arts institutions into a broad donor whose beneficiaries have come to include smaller groups.
Jesse Ventura Delivers TSA Smackdown
| KSTP Minneapolis reports: Former governor Jesse Ventura never shied away from a battle during his one term as Minnesota's chief executive.
Now, as a television performer, as he describes himself in a new lawsuit, the former pro-wrestler is trying to launch a legal smackdown against the agencies that are supposed to protect the flying public.
In a complaint filed Monday morning in the U.S. District Court for Minnesota, Ventura is suing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its secretary, Janet Napolitano, as well as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and its administrator, John Pistole.
Ventura accuses the agencies of violating his basic rights to privacy and dignity, and his right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures, after he received a pat-down by a TSA agent at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in November 2010.
Ventura, who said he has a titanium implant after hip replacement surgery in 2008, alleges the pat-down included warrantless, non-suspicion-based offensive touching, gripping and rubbing of the genital and other sensitive areas of his body, which, the lawsuit contends, met the definition for an unlawful sexual assault.
Ventura's Minneapolis-based attorney, David Olsen, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS this afternoon, The security procedures are going too far. There's a line somewhere and he believes that line has been crossed.
Olsen said Ventura no longer flies on commercial aviation because he is unwilling to submit to either a pat-down or a full-body scan, putting his job as host of cable television's Conspiracy Theory show, in jeopardy.
He's made a decision that someone needs to make a stand and he's not one to back down from a fight, said Olsen. He sees the erosion of civil liberties here and he's willing to stand up not only for himself, but for others.
A T.S.A. spokesperson said the agency does not comment on pending litigation.
On its website, the T.S.A. says Pat-downs are one important tool to help T.S.A. detect hidden and dangerous items such as explosives.
A message left at the D.H.S. in Washington, D.C. was not immediately returned.
In 2001, in the days after the September 11th terrorist attacks, then-Governor Ventura said increased scrutiny would be acceptable.
We're at war and we're at war inside our own country, Ventura said on Sept. 27, 2001, something we've never seen or heard of before inside the United States of America. I don't think you can be too careful and people are just going to have to accept a little bit of inconvenience.
Kim Staunton on the 2009 Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program

Ten Chimneys, Genesee Depot, Wisconsin On July 13, 2009, ten of the most respected and talented actors from across the United States formed the inaugural class of the Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program and embarked on a week of intensive study and reflection on the art of acting, led by master teacher and revered Shakespearean actress, Lynn Redgrave.
The Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program is a groundbreaking national program to serve regional theatre actors and the future of American theatre. The program, created by Ten Chimneys Foundation, is a fitting tribute to Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, who are widely regarded as the greatest acting couple in the history of the American theatre. State treasurer spends more than $6,800 in hotels
New Mexico is broke and elected officials know it. As lawmakers attempt to appropriate dollars that don’t exist, agency budgets are on the chopping block.
“We smoked through that 10 percent which we classified as reserve,” said Sen. John Arthur Smith, D-Deming.
“Basically, it’s about as bad as it can get,” added Sen. Gay Kernan, R-Hobbs.
We've cut as far as we can cut,” said Sen. Howie Morales, D-Silver City. “I think we've cut too much. The impact that we've had are going to be felt for years.
It’s the New Mexico treasurer’s job to serve as the state’s banker. He receives and deposits state monies, manages state investments and keeps track of budget surpluses and deficits.
Treasurer Tim Eichenberg assumed office in January 2015. He and the New Mexico Senate Finance Committee have been urging agencies to tighten their belts.
4 Investigates found that over 14 months, Eichenberg attended eight professional conferences that were held in Malibu, California; Nashville, Tennessee; Washington, D.C.; Boston; New Orleans; Seattle; and Providence, Rhode Island. He stayed at the Four Seasons Westlake Village, the Omni and the Mandarin Oriental. The hotels alone cost taxpayers $6,853.34.
The conferences included the Certificate in Achievement in Public Plan Policy, National Association of State Treasurers, the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers, and the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies.
In total, Eichenberg spent 34 days outside of the Land of Enchantment.
“The cost isn't as big of a burden as time,” Eichenberg said.
4 Investigates asked Eichenberg how the professional conferences benefited New Mexico taxpayers.
“I think that when I do my job well it benefits all of New Mexico,” he said. “I don't attend every conference.”
Eichenberg said as a new state treasurer, he’s learning how to grow New Mexico’s investments. He served as the Bernalillo County treasurer in 1974, was a state senator in 2009 and served as the New Mexico State Property tax director under Gov. Bill Richardson in 2004.
He has also been a property tax consultant, certified appraiser, contractor and real estate broker.
4 Investigates asked surrounding states how many professional conferences their treasurers and comptrollers attended since January 2015.
New Mexico Treasurer Tim Eichenberg -- 8
Wyoming Treasurer Mark Gordon -- 8
Oklahoma Treasurer Ken Miller -- 7
Utah Treasurer David Damschen -- 7
Kansas Treasurer Ron Estes -- 6
Nevada Treasurer Dan Schwartz -- 5
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar -- 1
Colorado Treasurer Walker Stapleton -- 1
4 Investigates asked members of the New Mexico Senate Finance Committee what they thought of Eichenberg’s travels.
I wasn't aware of any of the travel there but again, I think it goes back to common sense,” Morales said.
“We have the opportunity to travel to conferences that are very helpful in developing policy,” Kernan said.
There's merit to travel. You can network with other groups,” Smith said.

Answering the question, where do our nations acting mentors go to be mentored? the inaugural Lunt-Fontanne Fellows have come to Ten Chimneys to study with Ms. Redgrave and literally walk in the footsteps of the Lunts closest pals and protégés (Helen Hayes, Noël Coward, Alexander Woollcott, Katharine Hepburn, Laurence Olivier, Uta Hagen, Montgomery Clift, Julie Harris, and on and on)
The 2009 Lunt-Fontanne Fellows:
• Suzanne Bouchard nominated by Seattle Repertory Theatre (Seattle)
• Dan Donohue nominated by Oregon Shakespeare Festival (Ashland)

Ex-Starbucks CEO Schultz faces questions in Seattle
(1 Feb 2019) Grande ego. Venti mistake: That was the message protesters had for former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz as he returned to his hometown of Seattle on Thursday after announcing that he's mulling an independent run for president.
Several dozen protesters gathered outside a downtown theater before Schultz appeared to promote his new book.
They included Democrats who fret his candidacy would hand President Donald Trump another term, and green-and-gold-bedecked basketball fans who haven't forgiven him for selling the Seattle SuperSonics to a group that moved the team to Oklahoma City more than a decade ago.
The 65-year-old billionaire and Democratic donor, who stepped down as Starbucks chairman last June, has been on a tour of talk shows and news interviews the past few days, coinciding with the release of his latest book, From the Ground Up: A Journey to Reimagine the Promise of America.
He said he doesn't intend to decide whether to run for president for several months, but the reaction from prominent
Democrats has been swift.
The party chairwoman in Washington state, top advisers to former President Barack Obama and the most powerful political action committee in Democratic politics are among those who have criticized him, saying an independent bid would likely split the opposition to Trump and make his re-election more likely.

JUST WRIGHT: James Pickens, Jr. on Lebron, Common and Single Ladies....
BlackTree TV CEO Jamaal Finkley had a chance to sit down with James Pickens, Jr. to talk about the possibility of Lebron James leaving Cleveland to possibly play for the Knicks, and about Common' performance as a leading man in the new movie Just Wright. We also had a chance to speak about the dad's responsibility in the home in regards raising these young ladies to become potential wives and what not. Interesting conversation, you'll have to watch to find out what he says. Thank you for watching BlackTree TV!
JAMES PICKENS, JR. (Lloyd Wright), born in Cleveland, Ohio, started acting at the Karamu House, distinguished as the oldest African-American theater in the United States. After moving to New York, he performed in the historic 1981 production of Charles Fullers A Soldiers Play at the Negro Ensemble Company with fellow cast members Denzel Washington and Samuel L. Jackson. He was a member of the famed Circle Rep/Steppenwolf Theatre Company co-production of Lanford Wilsons Balm in Gilead, and he starred as Water Lee in the 25th anniversary revival of A Raisin in the Sun at the Roundabout Theater.
In 1990 Pickens moved to the West Coast and began an impressive run of film and television performances. On the big screen, he has been directed by some of the film industrys finest, including Steven Soderbergh in TRAFFIC, Oliver Stone in NIXON and Warren Beatty in BULWORTH, and he appeared in four Barry Levinson films -- SLEEPERS, SPHERE, JIMMY HOLLYWOOD and LIBERTY HEIGHTS. He portrayed slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers in GHOSTS OF MISSISSIPPI directed by Rob Reiner, and he played Angela Bassetts ex-husband in HOW STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BACK. Other films include MENACE II SOCIETY, HOME ROOM, and GRIDLOCKD.
He is well known to television audiences for his recurring roles on hit series including NYPD Blue, The X-Files, The Practice, Philly, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Six Feet Under, The West Wing, Rosanne and Beverly Hills 90210. He starred opposite Rob Lowe in The Lyons Den (NBC) and also starred with William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman in A Slight Case of Murder (TNT). He received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Drama Ensemble and four NAACP Image Awards nominations for his role on Greys Anatomy.
A man of wide ranging interests and passions, Pickens came full circle with his beloved Karamu House when he served as executive producer of Otis Sallids hit musical revue, Gospel, Gospel, Gospel, which opened to rave reviews in Los Angeles. He is a member of the United States Team Roping Championship, roping cattle on horseback at events across the country.
He recently delivered the keynote address to graduates at his alma mater, Bowling Green State University and was honored by the Cleveland Cavaliers during their annual Black Heritage Celebration.
