A Passage Encountering Greeks of the Diaspora in Miami
Following the approval of the ‘Greek Diaspora and Immigration’ research program by the Institute of International Education, USA and the FULBRIGHT Foundation, DRIMMI (‘Diaspora Research and Immigration Initiative’), a body of independent scholars and researchers was founded at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. It was January 2017 when Matoula Scaltsa, founding member of DRIMMI and professor of art history and museology, asked me to contribute to the initiative by conducting a series of interviews with Greek immigrants living in Miami. Drawing on their relationship with homeland, one of the questions posed by DRIMMI was: Which object that signifies Greece to you would you take with you if you had to leave your home in the USA? Interviewees were then photographed with that favorite object. This, eventually, led to an exhibition of photographs at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki, titled “A Passage”. The exhibition constitutes the first public presentation of DRIMMI and has introduced the first International Greek Diaspora Symposium in the city. It entails the video I am uploading, where you may find excerpts of the original interviews. It is open from May through July. Enjoy.

Inside Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent's California Dream House | Open Door | Architectural Digest
In this episode of Open Door, celebrity designers Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent (stars of TLC's Nate & Jeremiah By Design) give Architectural Digest a full-access house tour around their spectacular 1928 Spanish Colonial home in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.
The house clocks in at nearly 9,000 square feet. Past the front door there’s the gorgeous grand stairway with its original wrought-iron balustrade, straight out of a movie from Hollywood’s Golden Age. Then room after room bathed in glorious sunlight, gurgling fountains, and that heavenly oak tree, literally topping everything off. And, of course, there’s Poppy, the mistress of the manor. Not even Central Casting could produce a more scrumptious sprite.
The house's facelift entailed installing floors of antique marble to demarcate points of entry and transition; stripping, bleaching, and waxing the existing mahogany paneling in the dining room; replacing fireplace mantels and hardware with antique models; reworking the kitchen with new fixtures and surfaces; and furnishing the many rooms of the home in signature Berkus-Brent style.
As for what constitutes clean and masculine in this context, the designers layered the house with rustic French, Swedish, and American furnishings of wood and stone, juxtaposed with more tailored Continental pieces by the likes of Jacques Adnet, Maria Pergay, Angelo Mangiarotti, and Afra and Tobia Scarpa.
The through line is the doggedly neutral palette; Berkus and Brent rely on texture and patina to animate their personal interiors.
The one exception to the rainbow-of-beige rule is Poppy’s bedroom and playroom. In her bedroom, Poppy has the beginnings of a proper art collection, stocked with gifts from her parents’ friends, including a dreamy mobile by Julia Condon and a Michael Hainey hummingbird painting.
For Berkus and Brent, the one other space that seems to deviate from the distilled masculinity of the rest of the house is the master bathroom, which features hand-painted murals by James Mobley along with architectural details of a Prunella marble richly veined in deep purple and brown.
The couple took advantage of the ample space beyond the bathroom to install two very serious his-and-his closets.
In the atrium, a 19th-century bench with Kravet-velvet upholstery sits atop antique Spanish tiles from Paris Ceramics. 19th-century English glass pendant; 1950s low table from a Paris flea market; vintage club chair in a Carolina Irving Textiles stripe.
In the living room, a sofa by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Cassina, a circa-1950 Italian chair, and a pair of 1940s linen club chairs surround a marble cocktail table from Hollywood At Home. A 1950s Italian sconce hangs above a 1960s English bench covered in a Lee Jofa fabric; Belgian linen curtains by RH.
In the kitchen, the island is surrounded by circa-1960 French barstools; sink fittings by Waterstone; 19th-century French lanterns. Backsplash and surrounding countertops by Ollin Stone; Whitechapel brass knobs.
In the dining room, 1950s Jacques Adnet chairs join a 19th-century English table. A painting by Matt Connors hangs above a Directoire limestone mantel; circa-1970 Georges Pelletier ceramic pendant lights.
In the gallery, a 19th-century Italian bookcase, an 18th-century Swedish table, and a 1950s American bench.
The playroom's memory board and table, by RH Baby & Child; sofa and rug by RH Teen. Floor pillows and hippo basket from Anthropologie.
In Poppy's room, a wallpaper by Apparatus and ZAK + FOX hosts art by Hunt Slonem, Michael Hainey, Fernando Bengoechea, and Mary Little. A Julia Condon mobile hangs over an armchair by Cisco Home wearing a Mexican Otomi textile; crib, table, and chair by RH Baby & Child; Nate Berkus stool for Target; Caitlin Wilson rug.
In the master bath, a James Mobley mural and marble molding and panels from Waterworks. Tub by Signature Hardware, with Waterworks fittings; Duravit sink.
Brent and Berkus's RH bed, dressed in Matteo linens, is flanked by 1970s Italian tables. The circa-1960 chairs wear an Edelman Leather suede. Circa-1950 French bronze saucer light; custom Roman shades by The Shade Store; Maria Pergay steel table; HD Buttercup rug.
The pergola is painted in Benjamin Moore's Alabaster. RH pendant lights; vintage Kreiss chairs; Pottery Barn pillows. Poppy wears a Marysia Bumby swimsuit.

Dog thieves caught by angry mob in China, beaten and tied to pole for 10 hours - TomoNews
GUIZHOU PROVINCE — Incidents of mob justice for dog thieves in China can now add another chapter to the sordid history of violent vigilante punishment.
According to Guiyang Evening News, around 6am, two men were allegedly discovered shooting at dogs with slingshots. The dog owner, identified as Mr. Xiao, called for help and two of his neighbors chased the alleged dog thieves while they attempted to escape on a motorbike before crashing into a ditch.
Once they were caught, the men were reportedly beaten, tied to an electrical pole and had the dead dogs hung from their necks. Police were called to deal with the alleged thieves, but they had to call for backup to handle the out of control mob. Eventually, more than 100 government police officers had to be sent to deal with the angry villagers and the alleged thieves, the Daily Mirror reported.
The men accused of trying to steal the dogs were taken into police custody, and the mob justice is still being investigated.

Inside Sugar Factory — The Most Instagrammed Restaurant In America
Lots of restaurants these days have unique items that have customers whipping out their phones to take a pic and share it with their friends. But Sugar Factory takes the cake when it comes to Instagrammable food and drinks, with a broad range of colorful, and visually stunning items to choose from on its menu. We spoke with Sugar Factory partner Tom Recine about some of their most popular items, what exactly makes them Instagrammable, and how Instagram has affected their business. Following is a transcript of the video.
Customers: Sugar!
Tom Recine: Pretty much every single table will have their camera out because they see something they think is fantastic.
Sugar Factory is a restaurant, bar, retail, and many, many other things actually that's rolled into one.
In 2016, this was the number one Instagrammed restaurant in the country, if not the world.
It's a fantastic tool for us. I think it has definitely grown our business. When we create something, it's to create a wow. And that turns into an Instagram moment. I think it's definitely the best marketing tool there is on the planet. There's no question about that.
We stay very, very relevant in everything that we do.
We have something that's called a Couture Pop. It's a blinged stem with a screw-on lollipop top. That is backed by stars like Britney Spears and Kim Kardashian and many, many others. That's one thing that helped brand Sugar Factory.
Many, many celebrities come in on their own. Some celebrities their licensee tie-ins. We do a really good job of taking care of them, making them feel comfortable here. They respond with a lot of Instagram and Tweets on their own.
One thing is it can't be kitschy or hokey. It has to be relevant. I think people obviously, they eat with her eyes first. It's appealing to the eyes. It's something that everybody associates with. And it's something that everyone just has to have.
We sell a lot of drinks. We sell a lot of goblets. The Drake goblet is a new item on our menu that has just exploded. People are loving that. We have something called a Lollipop Passion. I think the Lollipop Passion is the number one most Instagrammed food or beverage item.
We also have an insane milkshake. The Sugar Daddy. And we have rainbow sliders with colored buns. Our King Kong Sundae is probably the number one dessert. It's a sundae that has 28 scoops of ice cream. And it's garnished with all kinds of candies and Unicorn Pops. And then two sparklers go in it. And the team celebrates a guest's birthday in a way that no other restaurant does.
Sometimes it's taking something that's tried and true, something that people really understand, and taking it to 2 or 3 levels higher. When that happens, you have a winner.

THE SECRET OF ANTARCTICA - Full Documentary HD (Advexon) #Advexon
Almost three miles of ice buries most of Antarctica, cloaking a continent half again as large as the United States. But when an Antarctic ice shelf the size of Manhattan collapsed in less than a month in 2002, it shocked scientists and raised the alarming possibility that Antarctica may be headed for a meltdown. Even a 10 percent loss of Antarctica's ice would cause catastrophic flooding of coastal cities unlike any seen before in human history. What are the chances of a widespread melt? Secrets Beneath the Ice explores whether Antarctica's climate past can offer clues to what may happen. NOVA follows a state-of-the-art expedition that is drilling three-quarters of a mile into the Antarctic seafloor. The drill is recovering rock cores that reveal intimate details of climate and fauna from a time in the distant past when the Earth was just a few degrees warmer than it is today. As researchers grapple with the harshest conditions on the planet, they discover astonishing new clues about Antarctica's past—clues that carry ominous implications for coastal cities around the globe.

Travel to Miami : About Miami
Miami is one of the state's – and the world’s – most popular vacation spots. Though destinations often are said to offer something for everyone, the Miami area offers multiple enticements for everyone: The trendy nightlife of South Beach, bejeweled by the eye candy of the Art Deco district. The bustle of Calle Ocho and the highly caffeinated energy of Little Havana. The plush hotels of Miami Beach and the historic hideaways of Coral Gables. Seemingly endless shopping opportunities in modern, sprawling malls and the quiet, personal attention offered by the family-owned shops of Coconut Grove and many other corners of the region. The lures of deep-sea fishing and golf and tennis. Miami's major league football, basketball, hockey and baseball. Boat shows and auto racing. Art festivals and outdoor food and wine extravaganzas. An international airport and the world’s busiest cruise port. The Miami area offers all of this – and so much more.
Travel to Miami : Best Times to Visit Miami
The best time to visit Miami is between March and May. During these months, you'll be able to enjoy daily temperatures in the 70s for non-peak rates, while the rest of the country is still defrosting. The year-round tropical climate and partying ways of nearby Miami Beach mean tourists — lots of tourists — from northern states, South America, Europe, Asia, anywhere and everywhere year-round. And when there are special events, the city sees even more visitors and higher hotel rates. For the best chance of scoring deals, book around the city-wide events or during the sweltering summer months.
Travel to Miami : How much does it cost to travel to Miami?
(Luxury) Average Daily Cost Per person, per day $ 306
(Mid-Range) Average Daily Cost Per person, per day $ 146
(budget-cheap) Average Daily Cost Per person, per day $ 62
geonameid=4164138&countrysearch=&country_code=&categoryid=0&budgettype=0&triptype=0&startdate=&enddate=&travelerno=0
Travel to Miami : Typical costs:
Hostel prices – A night in a 6-bed dorm costs about $25. A private room starts around $100 per night. Most hostels include free linens, free towels, free WiFi, and many offer free breakfast. The Jazz Hostel, Freehand, and South Beach Hostel are the best three in the city.
Budget hotel prices – You can find a room in a budget hotel starting around $70 per night. Hotels at this price point typically include private bathrooms, air-conditioning, a TV and free WiFi. On Airbnb, shared rooms start around $25 per night and entire homes start around $50 per night.
Average cost of food – If you are in the South Beach area or any of the restaurants on the strip, you should expect to pay at least $20 a meal. But, go away from the main area, and you will be able to eat for half of the price. As elsewhere in America, there are a ton of fast food options for less than $7. In Little Havana, you’ll find delicious Cuban food for less than $10. If you cook your own food, expect to pay $50 per week for groceries that will include pasta, vegetables, chicken, and other basic foods.
Transportation costs – It may take a while, but Miami’s extensive public transportation system will get you to where you need to go. Both the bus and the metrorail cost $2.25 per trip. Uber operates in Miami with a base fare of about $1 and it costs $1 per mile and is way cheaper than a taxi!
Suggested daily budget – $60-90 (Note: This is a suggested budget assuming you’re staying in a hostel, eating out a little, cooking most of your meals, and using local transportation. Using the budget tips below, you can always lower this number. However, if you stay in fancier accommodation or eat out more often, expect this to be higher!)

“Most Amazing Tourist Places In The World”
Compton Hauling
On Monday (11/25/13), I paid a visit to one of the coolest WM facilities in California - Compton Hauling. Many of you might have seen Bill and Zach's video of an ex-Western Waste Stagg ASL, which ran out of this yard. So you probably can guess that this yard has some really cool garbage trucks. Unfortunately those ex-Western Waste Staggs are no longer in operation, but I was very surprised to still see what this yard ran.
Since this is a smaller operation, this yard does not have very many trucks to begin with - between 50-60 trucks. So when I arrived at the yard, I was kind of surprised to see that none of the regular trucks were back at the yard yet. Last time I was here, most of the trucks were back around 2-3. This yard literally uses every single running truck out there in their operations. I did not see a single spare in the yard.
This yard used to be a former Western Waste yard - probably most visible with the trucks they ran in the past. Since Compton isn't the nicest area in the world, this yard never really got the best trucks running around. They did take delivery of one Think Green, Think Clean truck, but for the most part, this yard is run by LNG Autocar WX Amreps. Like I said, this yard sends out 99% of their fleet daily. So what I was left with was the scrap/spare line!
The trucks sitting in the scrap line were a surprise to me. I had no idea 98% of these trucks were going to be there. A couple of them aren't actually going to be scrapped yet. The coolest thing about the scrap line was that 90% of the trucks there were all inherited from a buyout, merge, etc. The only original Waste Management truck there I think was 101258. Every Peterbilt you see here is ex-Western Waste -- which you probably could tell from the orange paint peeking through. The two Amrep Octo ASLs you see at the beginning of the line are both ex-LA units. The McNeilus New-Century is ex-WMX. The STS is the only truck I'm that I'm not sure where it's from. On the other side of the line, the container truck is ex-Klistoff and Sons. The Volvo Amrep Octo FL is from a small company called Innovative that was based in Carson, CA. They only had three trucks. And the Volvo Wittke FL is from WMX I believe.
Many of you might now know this, but Compton's main operation in Dumpster repairs. This yard has a special truck (which you will see in the video) that goes around to sites all over Southern California and picks up old, rusted out Dumpsters. Then they take them over to this site, fix them up, repaint them, and send them back out. The process takes about 8 days, and the Dumpster shop has 8-10 guys working 10 hour shifts.
Also, on a side note, two of the Klistoff brothers are still working at the Compton Hauling yard. Hopefully one day I'll find them on route!
A BIG thank you goes out to every employee of Waste Management involved in my tour, especially Heros, the tour guide. He came in on his vacation to tour me around the facility and I really appreciate that. I'm looking forward to another adventure with him very soon! And of course, thank you to all Compton Hauling employees I met for being so friendly.
Enjoy, like, and/or favorite! I had a great day filming this, but it took some effort on both Waste Management's part and my part in order for this to happen. So PLEASE enjoy! Pictures will be up on Flickr soon.

Sneaky Ways Movie Theaters Get You To Spend More Money
Between ticket prices and concessions, movie theaters are expensive. But movie theater chains like AMC and Regal only keep around 50% of the revenue from ticket sales each year. But theaters are able to keep over 80% of concessions revenue as profit. So most theaters are designed to get you to spend money on food. And it works, AMC reports that more than 71% of attendees spend money on concessions.

Life, Love and Purpose Down on the Farm
The story of how landscape designer Connie Cunningham became a farmer and then opened a bed and breakfast has more twists and turns than a bumpy country road — but the telling reveals how love of home breeds perseverance and passion.
