The SKUNK Train! - California Western Railroad
All aboard! Take a ride through the coastal Redwood trees of California on the Skunk Train! We will travel to Fort Bragg, California for a ride on the California Western Railroad. Located about 150 miles north of the San Francisco Bay Area, this train passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. Watch the train as it travels from Fort Bragg on the coast to North Spur, where the locomotive is turned around. On the return trip, you will see scenes from the train as it passes along the Noyo River and between tall stands of redwood trees.

Amie and I got a chance to ride the Skunk Train last week and while we were there we found out that they have a new experience called railbikes which are used to bike ride on the train tracks. It was one of the most fun things we did on our trip and if you get up to Fort Bragg, check it out.

Run over by the Skunk Train in Fort Bragg, CA!!!
The changing of the engines. After the morning steam engine returns to the station, they back the diesel engine up to the back of the train, disconnect the steam engine, then they pull the whole train out of the way so the steam engine can back up and divert to another track. Once the steam engine is out of the way, the diesel backs the train back into the station so the passengers can start loading for the evening ride. Oh, and by the way... I filmed this from smack dab in the middle of the train tracks!

First day of a family vacation we went on the Skunk Train - Northspur Flyer. It's about a 4 and a half hour train ride through the redwoods in the Noyo River canyon northwest of Willits, CA.

ROAD TRIP! Much like old Route 66, The Redwood Highway, US-101, was covered with Epic Roadside Attractions, old Auto Courts, Motels, Historic sites, Abandoned buildings, old filling stations, and so much more!
California's Redwood highway travels through the far northern part of the state, North of San Francisco and up to the Oregon border. On this stretch, We visit Willits, California, the Gateway to the Redwoods and ride the historic California Western Railway, or The Skunk Train from the golden hills to some of the big trees, as well as look into some of the epic roadside history of a town that millions of people get gas in without realizing that this town has some Epic Roadside history!!
This is only one part of many Redwood Highway Adventures - each different! There are some amazing Roadside attractions, natural scenes, and historic then-and-now adventures ahead! While there are far less Redwood Highway travelers than Route 66 travelers, it contains much of the same kind of history and architecture, as well as having the added bonus of the world's tallest living thing, the California GIANT Redwoods. Although there are eco-tourists, crusty hippies, and family road trippers passing through, Hopefully these videos will encourage more Route 66 style Historic road travelers to take up the redwood highway challenge. The more visitors who ask these places about their history, leave tips and suggestions for old motels and businesses to embrace their history, etc etc, the more often these old highways preserve and restore that history. So please join me in traveling down the Redwood Highway, in Willits, CA!~

Pulled up the car at the depot and i bought my ticket for the Skunk Train and was curious about what to expect.
However i was out of luck that day the old coal steamer engine (hence the name Skunk Train because of the black smoke of the train) was having its day off and the newer diesel engine was on duty to pull the Skunk Train today.
Our route was from Fort Bragg to Northspur through the Jackson State Forest. The track is maintained by California Western Railroads and the scenic ride again leads through many redwood populations.
The ride was very fun, slowly we shaked and bended on the track, the Skunk Train is an event for the entire family and the little folks had incredible fun on the train. A wagon offering snacks and refreshments and a special wagon (you have to pay extra $) offering wine tasting during the ride.
Before leaving Northspur at the turnaround station we had the opportunity to have a lunch in the woods before we headed back towards Fort Bragg again enjoying the ride on the train.
It was great fun and enjoyable by all age groups.

Riding on the Mendocino Skunk Train
In May 2012 my husband and I went on a car trip to Northern California. We took a ride on the Skunk Train. It was so named because when it was built people thought the smoke smelled like a skunk. This is a short video of the guide on the train talking about the Redwoods we pass and then video of the train ride itself.

TUNNEL NO. 1 UPDATE:
A big thanks to Save the Redwoods League for stepping up to ensure service will be restored sooner rather than later and by taking the necessary first steps in protecting the trees and train line corridor.
Construction work will begin immediately; we hope to have full service restored to the railroad by mid-July, with service from Willits starting sooner. We will provide details of the rebuild project on a regular basis.
