Carrizo Plain National Monument, Soda Lake Trail, A Virtual Treadmill Video
Spring is a great time to visit this area for the wildflowers, however this year was an exceptional bloom, called a Super Bloom.
Great for training for that next run or trail experience.
A Virtual Video is a great way to see some new virtual scenery while working out on that treadmill or exercise bike. Working out at the gym can be tedious at times, and I found that being able to be distracted by viewing new places and trails, when I am not able to actually get away, is much more entertaining than watching either TVs or workout screens, and makes the time go much faster.
This National Park site is now up on my Website and which has a lot of information about it, and includes many pictures. Please check it out

Carrizo Plain National Monument
“A great earthquake shook the mountains, ripping a deep gash through the rock formations…”
Spanish travelers describing the 1857 earthquake in the Carrizo Plain
One of the nation’s newest National Monuments, the Carrizo Plain is located just 60 miles east of San Luis Obispo, California. Home to incredible views of the San Andreas Fault, The Carrizo Plains National Monument is often referred to as California’s “Serengeti”. Sprawled across a mix of wetlands and immense grasslands, the Carrizo Plain is approximately 50 miles long and 15 miles wide, providing a wide variety of endangered species with protected habitat and ecosystems.
The Carrizo Plain National Monument is home to a number of endangered, threatened, and rare species of animals, including the San Joaquin kit fox, the blunt-nosed leopard lizard, the giant kangaroo rat, and the San Joaquin antelope squirrel. Eagles, hawks and ravens soar in the blue skies above the colorful wildflowers that bloom during the spring months. Tule Elk and pronghorn antelope are often seen grazing on this ancient landscape.
Soda Lake is the centerpiece of the national monument. A massive expanse of nearly blinding-white mineral deposits, the carbonate salts appear to ripple and sway in the heat waves of summer.
Wallace Creek is perhaps the best place in the monument to view just how dramatically the San Andreas Fault has affected the Carrizo Plain. Evidence of its geologic movements can be seen in the offset of the creek bed and towering fault scarps that overlook the Carrizo Plain.
Painted Rock, a horseshoe-shaped monolith rock formation, stands 55 feet above the high plain adjacent to the Caliente Mountain Range. Painted Rock is recognized as one of the most important Native American rock painting sites in the United States. The interior of the rock alcove is adorned with many pictographs of sacred and supernatural images. The Chumash, Yokuts, and Salinan Indians lived, hunted and traded in this central region of California.
Seeing firsthand the beauty of the Carrizo Plain National Monument, it’s obvious that there is more to it than what meets the eye.

High Speed Video Through the Carrizo Plain in California
This is video of a drive I took driving northbound on Soda Lake Road through the beautiful Carrizo Plain in eastern San Luis Obispo County, from State Route 166 to State Route 58 on the north. This is the high speed version, at 285% of normal playback speed. Any dissolves you see are simply from having to dump the video off of the camera to clear memory, and then continuing on. No mileage is missed out.
I reduced playback down to 100% speed during one short portion of the drive in which we stopped at the Soda Lake Overlook Rest Stop. Soda Lake was dry during this time because we had a tremendous drought in California. Then, the playback goes back to high speed again for the duration of the video.
All piano tunes are from Autumn 20th Anniversary Edition album © 2001 Composer George Winston, Publisher RCA Victor. There is also some incidental classic country music from XM Radio as well 100% speed playback moments. I do not claim any ownership to any of the music.

Central California Dual Sport Tour Part 2 Carrizo Plain
I ride across Carrizo Plain to connect to Soda Lake Road, which is mostly paved once I go to it, much to my disappointment. But Carrizo Plain remains a vast landscape that allows you to see for miles because of the rolling hilly terrain and lack of trees.

California Time-Lapse
This is a little project I've been working on for a while, a series of time-lapse shots celebrating nature, astronomy and its interface with the human environment (or some artsy description like that :-p). Footage is a compilation of shots I have accumulated over the last three years. It is not arranged in chronological order so shot to shot you will see the difference in quality as I got better equipment and learned new tricks. As is the case with these things being in the right place at the right time was everything.
