The Cultural Arts Committee works with City Council to support cultural arts programs and to bring art awareness to the residents of Costa Mesa, the City of the Arts. This committee works to establish programs, events and information that help residents access the arts in many different venues, and through multiple sources.
At the end of World War II, Costa Mesa was a cozy no man’s land – an unincorporated area surrounded by Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Santa Ana that had its own post office, a small commercial strip where Newport and Harbor boulevards met and a whole lot of open space at its fringes.
When Costa Mesa incorporated in June 1953 – the first new Orange County city in a quarter century – many locals saw it as a defensive maneuver: Santa Ana was threatening to annex the former Army Air Base that bore its name, a 1,337-acre swath of land close to town that was ripe for development.
Flash forward 64 years: Costa Mesa can now lay claim to being Orange County’s center of commerce, culture and cuisine.
South Coast Plaza, one of America’s largest and most successful shopping centers, is in Costa Mesa. So are cutting-edge retail complexes such as The LAB, The Camp and South Coast Collection.
Costa Mesa has dubbed itself “City of the Arts” for good reason. Segerstrom Center for the Arts, a nationally renowned performing arts center, is there. So is Tony-winning South Coast Repertory, a leader in new-play development. Valuable space nearby is earmarked for the long anticipated Orange County Museum of Art.
But it’s not just shopping and high-brow art. The Westside, once home to boat-builders and other small industries, is a bohemian haven of bars and hangouts and artisans. On 19th Street, there’s The Wayfarer, Casa Costa Mesa and SOCIAL. Nearby, the Boathouse Collective and the Wild Goose Tavern attract the same crowds.
Many of Orange County’s best restaurants are spread around town, too – Taco Maria, Hana re, Arc, Mesa. Last month, Taco Maria’s Carlos Salgado was named Best New Chef by Food & Wine magazine, an award bestowed on only 10 young chefs nationwide each year. In late 2015, “Top Chef” runner-up Amar Santana opened Vaca, his second restaurant, in the city’s Theater and Arts District.
It doesn’t have Laguna’s pretty coast, or Newport’s money, or Irvine’s master plan, or Anaheim’s big league sports and theme park. So how did Costa Mesa transform from a between-towns borderland into the vibrant heart of our large and cosmopolitan county? It’s a story with several parts.
Floor Speech In Memory of Jean Hamilton Aldrich
Mister Speaker,
I rise in memory Jean Hamilton Aldrich, who passed away on March 23, 2016 at the age of 96.
Mrs. Aldrich was married to the University of California, Irvine’s founding Chancellor, Daniel G. Aldrich, Jr. Together, they watched as Irvine transformed into the hub for business and technology it has become today, all centered around one of the nation’s top research universities. Their work played a tremendous role in this transformation.
But Mrs. Aldrich’s public service reached far beyond the University. She participated in health and arts projects and served on boards for both a home for the developmentally disabled and South Coast Repertory, a professional theatre company in Costa Mesa.
She will long be remembered for her infectious laughter, her ability to keep her composure in high pressure situations, and her service to the Irvine community. Mrs. Aldrich leaves behind a rich legacy; she is survived by three children, seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
We join them in mourning the loss of Mrs. Aldrich, who was truly a leader in our community.

Sean (Wellengard) Engard, Playwright - Hollins Playwriting MFA Program
Sean Engard is an accomplished actor, director, poet, and playwright. He received his AA in Theatre Arts from Orange Coast College, his BA in Theatre Education from Cal State Fullerton, and is an MFA candidate in the Playwright's Lab at Hollins University. He's also a graduate of the South Coast Repertory: Professional Conservatory. Mr. Engard has published two books (a book of poetry entitled Socially Inept and Timeless Theater: Monologue and Play Book) and has had two full length plays produced (Air Born and Nobody Loves a Telemarketer) along with numerous one acts and monologues. He adapted a selection of Edgar Allan Poe's works that were performed at STAGES Theatre. Sean is a member of the DGA (Dramatist's Guild of America) and the OCPA (Orange County Playwrights Alliance). He is a founding member of SWAG (Script Writing Artisans Group), the stand-up/sketch/improv troupe known as ComedyKaze, and the newly formed Monkey Wrench Collective theatre company in Fullerton. Sean was named the Costa Mesa's The Daily Pilot's Man of the Year in Theatre for 2007.

A tribute to my favorite theater troupe: CULTURE CLASH for their 30th anniversary. This rap is from their play, A Bowl of Beings (opened at LATC June 1991), published in Culture Clash: Life, Death and Revolutionary Comedy (Theatre Communications Group © 1998). Directed by Raul Cardona. Performed & edited by Daniel Chacón. Glad to see that Richard Montoya, Ric Salinas & Herbert Siguenza have remained active as renegade artists both collectively & individually for over 30 years! I have been immeasurably inspired by their work as performers, writers & directors since I first saw them perform at Watsonville High freshman year. It was 1990 & they were touring their show (A Bowl of Beings) to Northern California high schools & colleges before it opened in L.A. They made me laugh & they made me think. It was also the first time I had ever seen an actor rap & he was bilingual! When Ric Salinas started spittin' La Vida Rap, my 2 favorite styles of performance converged onstage: Chicano theater and hip-hop. It was El Teatro Campesino meets Run DMC! (Mellow Man Ace & Kid Frost came out around the same time) It changed my life! Over 20 years later, I'm still creating bilingual theater & hip-hop calling it hip-hop teatro & rapquachi. Ric Salinas was one of the first performers to incorporate hip-hop culture in the script & on the stage (in the 80's) way before the term hip-hop theater was coined & the genre emerged. Suspense: My Dear Niece / The Lucky Lady (East Coast and West Coast)
The program's heyday was in the early 1950s, when radio actor, producer and director Elliott Lewis took over (still during the Wilcox/Autolite run). Here the material reached new levels of sophistication. The writing was taut, and the casting, which had always been a strong point of the series (featuring such film stars as Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Henry Fonda, Humphrey Bogart, Judy Garland, Ronald Colman, Marlene Dietrich, Eve McVeagh, Lena Horne, and Cary Grant), took an unexpected turn when Lewis expanded the repertory to include many of radio's famous drama and comedy stars — often playing against type — such as Jack Benny. Jim and Marian Jordan of Fibber McGee and Molly were heard in the episode, Backseat Driver, which originally aired February 3, 1949.
The highest production values enhanced Suspense, and many of the shows retain their power to grip and entertain. At the time he took over Suspense, Lewis was familiar to radio fans for playing Frankie Remley, the wastrel guitar-playing sidekick to Phil Harris in The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show. On the May 10, 1951 Suspense, Lewis reversed the roles with Death on My Hands: A bandleader (Harris) is horrified when an autograph-seeking fan accidentally shoots herself and dies in his hotel room, and a vocalist (Faye) tries to help him as the townfolk call for vigilante justice against him.
With the rise of television and the departures of Lewis and Autolite, subsequent producers (Antony Ellis, William N. Robson and others) struggled to maintain the series despite shrinking budgets, the availability of fewer name actors, and listenership decline. To save money, the program frequently used scripts first broadcast by another noteworthy CBS anthology, Escape. In addition to these tales of exotic adventure, Suspense expanded its repertoire to include more science fiction and supernatural content. By the end of its run, the series was remaking scripts from the long-canceled program The Mysterious Traveler. A time travel tale like Robert Arthur's The Man Who Went Back to Save Lincoln or a thriller about a death ray-wielding mad scientist would alternate with more run-of-the-mill crime dramas.

Students in MTSU’s Jones College of Business now have access to an innovative sales laboratory that will allow them to hone their selling skills in their efforts to become ready-to-hire graduates.
The university cut the ribbon Tuesday, Aug. 7, on the Mel Adams State Farm Agent Sales Lab on the first floor of its Business and Aerospace Building. It is named in honor of the alumnus (’61) and retired longtime State Farm agent who continues to support the university and its new Professional Selling concentration.
