2018 Ferris Wheel Countdown for New Years Eve | Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier
Counting down to 2018 on the world-famous Pacific Wheel. Reaching far West in the continental United States, Pacific Park featured this 90-feet tall 2018 countdown to New Year’s Eve over the Pacific Ocean at the Santa Monica Pier
The Pacific Wheel’s 174,000 LED lights are mounted on the Ferris wheel’s structure including the 40 spokes and two hubs. The world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel’s lighting system features 16.7 million color value combinations while the programming and display software presents imaging up to 24 frames per second to display dynamic, custom, computer-generated lighting entertainment. The eco-friendly, enhanced LED lighting provides 81 percent greater energy savings than most Ferris wheel’s traditional incandescent bulbs.
Santa Monica homeless man used to work as an accountant.
When I walked up on Larry he had all his clothes out drying in the sun. He was extremely nice and wanted to make sure I was comfortable. He rearranged a few items on the grass so I could sit. When everything you own can fit into a medium-sized suitcase that bag becomes your life. Looking at life through the eyes of a homeless person everything changes. In Larry's mind, he eats like a millionaire although he is surviving of off food that has been thrown away. Larry has kind of a neat idea. He suggests that the city put little racks next to the trash cans where food, beverages, clothes, or anything valuable could be left for the homeless. A few times Larry talked about his drug use. Living on the streets is horrible and anyone would want to escape reality. I found it interesting that Larry was the second homeless accountant I spoke to that day. Larry speaks a few times about the homeless supporting each other, yet when I lived on the streets I found it to be the exact opposite.

History[edit]
Main articles: History of Pasadena, California and Old Town Pasadena
Indigenous culture and colonization[edit]
The original inhabitants of Pasadena and surrounding areas were members of the Native American Hahamog-na tribe, a branch of the Tongva Nation. They spoke the Tongva language (part of the Uto-Aztecan languages group) and had lived in the Los Angeles Basin for thousands of years.[21] Tongva dwellings lined the Arroyo Seco (Los Angeles County) in present day Pasadena and south to where it joins the Los Angeles River and along other natural waterways in the city.
The native people lived in thatched, dome-shape lodges. They lived on a diet of acorn meal, seeds and herbs, venison, and other small animals. They traded for ocean fish with the coastal Tongva. They made cooking vessels from steatite soapstone from Catalina Island. The oldest transportation route still in existence in Pasadena is the old Tongva foot trail, also known as the Gabrielino Trail, that follows the west side of the Rose Bowl and the Arroyo Seco past the Jet Propulsion Laboratory into the San Gabriel Mountains. The trail has been in continuous use for thousands of years. An arm of the trail is also still in use in what is now known as Salvia Canyon. When the Spanish occupied the Los Angeles Basin they built the San Gabriel Mission and renamed the local Tongva people Gabrielino Indians, after the name of the mission. Today, several bands of Tongva people live in the Los Angeles area.

People In San Francisco Are Pissed Over Electric Scooters (HBO)
Inspired by Uber and Lyft — and even hiring some of the rideshares’ executives — a handful of companies are scattering electric scooter across cities first, then waiting for the law to deal with them.
It’s an idea promoted by former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick called “principled confrontation.” Euwyn Poon, cofounder of electric scooter company Spin, refers to it as “innovating on the regulatory side.”
City officials called it something else: “illegal business activities.”
In Santa Monica in September, Bird put scooters on the streets, allowing customers to unlock them with a proprietary rideshare app.
Santa Monica responded by filing criminal charges against the company, which were ultimately dismissed when the company pleaded no contest and agreed to pay $300,000 in fines.
In San Francisco this month, the electric scooter companies, first LimeBike and Spin, then Bird, again distributed scooters across the city, and all three companies have argued neither city had rules in place to regulate their particular mode of transportation.
The companies see it as an emissions-free solution to the “last mile” often walked on foot or taken on a rideshare after using public transit.
Residents complain that riders take the scooters on sidewalks and leave them parked across sidewalks, blocking ADA ramps and tripping unsuspecting pedestrians.
Since their rollout, the companies have been negotiating with Santa Monica and San Francisco on how scooters should be regulated, and how the companies can get their riders to follow the rules.

Los Angeles Homeless Man Shares the Harsh Reality of Skid Row
Skid Row hurt me in ways I can't ever explain. It made me do things and made see things I wish I would have never seen. ~ Luke
Luke story of living homeless on Los Angeles's Skid Row is powerful and heartbreaking. No one should have to live like this. No one should have to fight just to survive for food and shelter and live in constant in fear!
Luke came to LA with his wife. Her family invited them to come to live with them, so they jumped on a Greyhound bus. They started calling, and their family never answered. When they arrived in Los Angeles the couple was forced to go to Skid Row where they are now stuck!
Skid Row was created by intentional urban design. The decision was made to place most all of the city's homeless services in that one area. The theory was that by having all of the resources in one location that it would contain Los Angeles's homeless crisis.
Skid Row is by the bus station. It's where all the shelters are. It's where all the food is. It's where all the resources are located. But Skid Row is a very nasty place Luke shares in this interview. He goes on to say [Skid Row] will make it so you are just constantly worried about what you need to survive because everything is being taken from you.
Luke talks about how gangs tax homeless people in Skid Row for living on the sidewalk or in a certain area. If you don't pay, they beat you up or burn down your tent with all of your belongings in it.
For those of you that are going to judge Luke for being on drugs, you need to understand that people use drugs to escape pain. It's nearly impossible to stay sober while homeless and if you're stuck in a place like Skid Row, drugs become a way to cope with life. Luke's wife had to resort to prostitution and ended up pregnant. Near the end of her pregnancy, she started having seizures and was diagnosed with brain cancer. Luke was beaten 13 times since living homeless on Skid Row.
I pray Luke's story messes you up like it did me. We cannot continue to look the other way and ignore the growing homeless crisis in America. Please watch and share this video with everyone you know and then take real tangible action to fight homelessness in your community.

Mysterious Light In The Sky Seen Across California Likely A Meteor
A mysterious light in the sky was seen from Los Angeles to San Francisco Wednesday night.
Former Social Worker with a Master's Degree Homeless in Charlotte
I joined Urban Ministry's outreach team looking for a homeless man in Charlotte, North Carolina. We drove to several locations, and the man was not in his usual spots. We saw a group of homeless people on the side of the road and stopped to ask if they knew they knew the man we were looking for.
Michelle approached the car and leaned in to inform us of the man we were looking for passed away a few days ago. Michelle spoke fondly of the homeless man. They were friends. Michele shared with a tear in her eye how the man passed away with money in his pocket and wearing new clothes. That thought made her happy. It was a moment that's hard to put into words. Michelle clearly had an understanding of the streets.
Michelle then went on to make a few suggestions to the outreach team. Allison, the outreach director, started taking notes. Turns out, Michelle is a former social worker with a masters degree. She had invaluable insight into life on the streets.
Michelle lost or job and then her apartment. Michelle's daughter went to go stay with her godmother while Michelle ended up on the streets homeless. She thought it would only be for a short period of time. That was almost two years ago.
Michelle is hurting. She is vulnerable. Although I was homeless myself, I can't imagine what Michelle has had to do to survive each and every day! My heart breaks for her because I know how hard the transition from the streets to a home can be. Because of the severe lack of affordable housing, It can take months and possibly years to get Michelle off the streets. That's where you come in.
Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.
Special thanks to Urban Ministry

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn't just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don't take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

70's Kids Remember H. R. Pufnstuf!
H.R. Pufnstuf is a children's television series produced by Sid and Marty Krofft in the United States. It was the first Krofft live-action, life-size puppet program. The seventeen episodes were originally broadcast from September 6, 1969 to December 27, 1969. The broadcasts were successful enough that NBC kept it on the Saturday morning schedule until August 1972. The show was shot in Paramount Studios and its opening was shot in Big Bear Lake, California. Reruns of the show aired on ABC Saturday morning from September 2, 1972 to September 8, 1973 and on Sunday mornings in some markets from September 16, 1973 to September 8, 1974. It was syndicated by itself from 1974 to 1978 and in a package with six other Krofft series under the banner Krofft Superstars from 1978 to 1985. The show currently runs on MeTV at 7am every Saturday Morning and online anytime on MeTV's website.
In 2004 and 2007, H.R. Pufnstuf was ranked #22 and #27 on TV Guide's Top Cult Shows Ever.
The H.R. Pufnstuf character was originally created for the HemisFair '68 world's fair in 1968, where the Kroffts produced a show called Kaleidescope for the Coca-Cola pavilion. The character's name was Luther and he became the symbol of the fair.
The show centered on a shipwrecked boy named Jimmy (played by teenage actor Jack Wild). He is 11 years old when he arrives on the island and turns 12 in the episode called The Birthday Party. Jimmy and his friend, a talking flute named Freddy, take a ride on a mysterious boat, which promised adventures across the sea, to kooky Living Island, home of dancing talking trees and singing frogs. The Mayor of Living Island was a friendly and helpful dragon named H.R. Pufnstuf (voiced by the show's writer Lennie Weinrib, who also voices many of the other characters). The boat was actually owned and controlled by a wicked witch named Wilhelmina W. Witchiepoo (played by Billie Hayes) who rode on a broomstick-like vehicle called the Vroom Broom. She used the boat to lure Jimmy and Freddy to her castle on Living Island, where she was going to take Jimmy prisoner and steal Freddy. But H.R. Pufnstuf found out about her plot and was able to rescue Jimmy when he leaped out of the enchanted boat with Freddy and swam ashore.
Jimmy was taken in by H.R. Pufnstuf, who was able to protect him from Witchiepoo, as the cave where he lived was the only place her magic had no effect. Apart from Jimmy and Witchiepoo, all of the characters on Living Island were realized via large cumbersome costumes or puppetry. Since everything on Living Island was alive (namely houses, castles, boats, clocks, candles, books, trees, mushrooms, etc.), virtually any part of the Living Island sets could become a character, usually voiced in a parody of a famous film star, such as Mae West, Edward G. Robinson or most notably John Wayne as The West Wind. A frequent plot device involves Witchiepoo and her henchmen Orson Vulture, Seymour Spider, and Stupid Bat trying to steal Freddy only to be thwarted by Pufnstuf. Another concerns Jimmy and Freddy's efforts to return home from Living Island with the same lack of success.
Jimmy (portrayed by Jack Wild) - One of the main characters of the series. He is a young English boy who was lured to Living Island by an enchanted boat that worked for Witchiepoo because Jimmy possesses a magic talking flute named Freddy.
H.R. Pufnstuf (performed by Roberto Gamonet, voiced by Lennie Weinrib) - One of the main characters of the series. H.R. Pufnstuf is a friendly dragon who speaks in a southern accent and is the Mayor of Living Island.
Freddy the Flute (voiced by Joan Gerber) - Freddy is a magic talking flute that is owned by Jimmy. He is often targeted by Witchiepoo.
Cling and Clang (performed by Joy Campbell and Angelo Rossitto) - Cling and Clang are two short humanoids with three-toed feet and birdlike faces who work for H.R. Pufnstuf as his Rescue Racer Crew. Throughout the show, Cling and Clang never spoke.
Wilhelmina W. Witchiepoo (portrayed by Billie Hayes) - The primary antagonist of the series. Wilhelmina W. Witchiepoo is a wicked but inefficient witch who has been targeting Freddy the Flute. She rides a large rocket-powered broom with a steering wheel called the Vroom Broom. She is mean to everyone around her, even her henchmen, whom she constantly whacks with her wand, yet when faced with failure she usually starts to pity herself, asking Why me?.
Orson Vulture (performed by Joy Campbell, voiced by Lennie Weinrib) - A stuffy, somewhat inept vulture who is one of Witchiepoo's henchmen. As her favorite flunky, he multitasks as her sounding board, butler, and co-pilot on her Vroom Broom.
Seymour Spider (performed by Angelo Rossitto, voiced by Walker Edmiston) - A dim-witted spider who is another of Witchiepoo's henchmen. As her second favorite flunky, he primarily serves her as an alternate sounding board and hairdresser.
Driving Downtown - Miami's South Beach 4K - USA
Driving Downtown Neighborhoods - South Beach - Miami Beach Florida USA - Episode 2.
Starting Point: Washington Avenue - Neighborhood: .
South Beach, also nicknamed SoBe, is a neighborhood in the city of Miami Beach, Florida, United States.
History
Before the days of Miami Vice, South Beach was considered a very poor area with a very high rate of crime. Today, it is considered one of the wealthiest and most prosperous commercial areas on the beach. Despite this, poverty and crime still exist in some isolated places surrounding the area.[9]
In 2009, Natalie O'Neill of the Miami New Times said, Until the 1980s, Miami Beach was a peculiar mix of criminals, Cubans, and little old ladies. Then the beautiful people moved in.[10] In the late 1980s, a renaissance began in South Beach, with an influx of fashion industry professionals moving into the area. In 1989, Irene Marie purchased the Sun Ray Apartments (famous for the chainsaw scene in Scarface) and opened Irene Marie Models - the first international full-service modeling agency in Florida. Many of the large New York-based agencies soon followed.
Thomas Kramer is credited with starting the construction boom in South Beach, driving the gentrification of the area. It is now a popular living destination for the wealthy. Condominium units in the upscale high rises sell for millions. There are a number of vocal critics of the developments. The high-rise and high-density buildings are derided as a concrete jungle. However, even critics concede that the development has changed the area into a pedestrian friendly, low-crime neighborhood.[11][12] Today
In both daytime and at nightfall, the South Beach section of Miami Beach is a major entertainment destination with hundreds of nightclubs, restaurants, boutiques and hotels. The area is popular with tourists from Europe, Israel and the entire Western Hemisphere, with some having permanent or second homes. The large number of European tourists results in South Beach's tolerance of the female monokini, aka topless sunbathing, despite it being a public beach.
South Beach's residents' varied backgrounds are evident in the many languages spoken. In 2000, 55% of residents of the city of Miami Beach spoke Spanish as a first language, while English was the first language for 33% of the population. Portuguese (mainly Brazilian Portuguese) was spoken by 3% of residents, while French (including Canadian French) was spoken by 2%, and German by 1%. Italian, Russian, Yiddish and Hebrew were all spoken by less than 1%.[13]
Another unique aesthetic attribute of South Beach is the presence of several colorful and unique stands used by Miami Beach's lifeguards on South Beach. After Hurricane Andrew, Architect William Lane donated his design services to the city and added new stops on design tours in the form of lifeguard towers. His towers instantly became symbols of the revived City of Miami Beach.

California governor leaving with climate warning
(19 Dec 2018) California Gov. Jerry Brown says world leaders are sound asleep as the threat of nuclear annihilation and climate disruption loom, worsening wildfires and other natural disasters.
Brown spoke about the climate crisis, California's catastrophic wildfires, the 2020 presidential campaign and Democratic control of state politics during an interview with the Associated Press at the governor's mansion in Sacramento.
The Democrat helped his party become dominant in California politics during his eight years leading the nation's most populous state, and less than a month before leaving office, he is predicting it will be difficult for his successor to control Democrats' hunger for more spending and rules.
Democrats hold all statewide offices and expanded their supermajority in the Legislature last month, allowing them to approve tax hikes and virtually any law without Republican support.
In the interview, Brown, 80, called for more blunt discussions about the danger of wildfires to force officials and residents to act, pushed back against critics who say he's too friendly to oil companies, and chided world leaders for failing to tackle climate change with urgency.
He leaves office Jan. 7 after wrapping up a record four terms, first from 1975 to 1983 and again since 2011.
The governor's comments on Democratic priorities reflect the more frugal attitude he brought to Sacramento. He entered office with a $27 billion deficit and leaves a nearly $15 billion rainy day fund and a surplus.
Brown is leaving office on the heels of the deadliest U.S. wildfire in a century. Flames tore through the town of Paradise last month, killing at least 86 people and destroying 14,000 homes. He's blamed climate change for more destructive blazes in recent years and warned things will worsen.
The governor called the need to limit building in areas at high risk for wildfires obvious but said it's politically painful to implement when people want to rebuild their homes and developers see opportunities.
People who choose to live in high-risk areas need to plan escape routes, build cellars and manage vegetation, he said. And the state must provide more information about the true danger of wildfires, he said.
Wildfires offer Brown an opportunity to call for swifter action against climate change, which is making California drier and more prone to flames. He's urged action beyond California, working with the U.N., creating a global coalition to reduce climate emissions and holding meetings in China and Russia.
