Camping Out For Black Friday in Toledo!
Bryan Davis, and his son Mike, began camping at the Best Buy on Monroe Street in Toledo last week to be first in line when the store opens Thanksgiving night with Black Friday shopping deals. This is Bryan's 8th year to get in line early, his son's 3rd. So far, Bryan has only used three vacation days from his job with the City of Toledo, and says it's totally worth the sacrifice to do something nice for his family. Phantom of the Opera audience evacuates Providence Performing Arts Center
During the November 29th performance of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA at the Providence Performing Arts Center, there was an electrical smell (possibly coming from a pyrotechnic display) that lingered for several minutes at the start of the 2nd act. I was sitting in the mezzanine and the odor made several of us sick. Several minutes later, there was a noise that sounded like a wave coming from the back of the theater as many theater goers got up and started scrambling for the exits. It was VERY scary. No alarms sounded and nobody yelled fire -- thankfully, or else it would've been a full blown panic. However, many audience members left even as the show continued, which prompted a woman next to me to say it's like the Titanic, they're not going to stop (it eventually did).
Keep in mind the START of the show itself was delayed for an hour -- the doors for the 7:30 show didn't even open until 7:50 due to an electrical problem, keeping all of us out in the freezing cold, so that likely weighed on people's minds as well. Between that and the horrific Station Fire that happened here a decade ago, I don't blame people for getting upset -- that kind of smell shouldn't have lingered that noticeably (you wonder if it wasn't something attributed to why the show was delayed for so long to begin with).
Apparently the Phantom didn't want this performance to happen!
SAVE POST OFFICE FOR WEB.wmv
Hundreds of people, including two well-known political figures, turned out for the chance to oppose the proposed closure of a Toledo USPS facility on Thursday night. Toledo Mayor Mike Bell was among the almost 300 concerned citizens, many of them postal workers, at a public meeting put on by the independent government agency at the Stranahan Theater. USPS officials organized the meeting in order to give the public a chance to weigh in on their plan to close the USPS processing facility on South St. Clair Street.
