Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! 1986 TWA Trans World Airlines Commercial
Trans World Airlines (TWA) was a major American airline from 1925 until 2001. It was originally formed as Transcontinental & Western Air to operate a transcontinental route from New York City to Los Angeles via St. Louis and Kansas City, as well as other intermediate stops with Ford Trimotor aircraft. Along with American, United, and Eastern, it was one of the Big Four domestic airlines in the United States formed by the Spoils Conference of 1930.[4]
Howard Hughes acquired control of TWA in 1939, and after World War II led the expansion of the airline to serve Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, making TWA a second unofficial flag carrier of the United States after Pan Am.[5][6] Hughes gave up control in the 1960s, and the new management of TWA acquired Hilton International and Century 21 in an attempt to diversify the company's business. As the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 led to a wave of airline failures, start-ups, and takeovers in the United States, TWA was spun off from its holding company in 1984. Carl Icahn acquired control of TWA and took the company private in a leveraged buyout in 1988. TWA became saddled with debt, sold its London routes, underwent Chapter 11 restructuring in 1992 and 1995, and was further stressed by the explosion of TWA Flight 800 in 1996. In 2001, TWA filed for a third and final bankruptcy and was acquired by American Airlines. American laid off many former TWA employees in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks and closed its St. Louis hub in 2003.[7]
TWA was headquartered at one time in Kansas City, Missouri, and planned to make Kansas City International Airport its main domestic and international hub, but abandoned this plan in the 1970s.[8] The airline later developed its largest hub at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. Its main trans-Atlantic hub was the TWA Flight Center at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, an architectural icon designed by Eero Saarinen and completed in 1962.[9] Check this out!

THE WORLD OF TWA TRANS WORLD AIRLINES ROUND THE WORLD TRIP 1970s 72812
Support Our Channel :
Produced by Trans World Airlines in the 1970s, The World of TWA was a travelogue series that presented the many glamorous destinations served by the company. Accompanied by a fabulous theme song, the start of this film is a terrific music video that features jets, passengers, baggage, and plane talk. The film follows (in droning voiceover) a typical American couple as they travel around the world on TWA, starting in London, England, and continuing to Paris, France, Rome and Pisa, Italy, the Holy Land including the Sea of Galilee, Greece, Egypt, India, Thailand and finally Hong Kong.
The film was made by Carl Dudley Productions.

TWA Kiss, Constellation Celebration 1944, Jack & Helen Vanderbilt Frye, Howard Hughes
'Mr. & Mrs. TWA' at Washington D.C. April 17, 1944
Welcome to the glamorous early years of TWA, this was the face of Transcontinental & Western Air, Inc. under the tenure of longtime president Jack Frye and his beautiful wife, the former Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jr. (Jack was just 40, and Helen was 35!)
Lockheed Constellation, second unit off the line. The airliner that enabled TWA to claim the first scheduled Trans-Atlantic service, continuing around the world!
TWA Constellation Celebration (April 17th, 1944) with Jack & Helen Frye, Howard Hughes, and Secretary of Commerce Jesse H. Jones (Roosevelt Administration). TWA hostess is Dorraine Strole (Dodie) Palmer and Rita P. Crooks (dark hair).
This a short clip of a longer color film which showcases the 1944 record Connie flight with pilots Jack Frye and Howard Hughes. The reception took place on April 17th, 1944. Helen and Jack Frye as seen ascending the ramp to a TWA Constellation NC 310310 before the stunning airliner takes off on a promo flight over Washington D.C.
Cross-Country-Record!
Air route was from (BUR) Burbank CA., over Kingman AZ., Taos N.M., Wichita KS., St. Louis MO., Cincinnati OH., with arrival at Washington D.C. As the plane rocketed over the Southern Rockies and Northern New Mexico it encountering unfavorable weather and turbulence. Over Kansas icing necessitated a climb to 18,500 feet in order to stay above the weather. Soon the sleek airliner was racing over the cities of St. Louis and Cincinnati. At this juncture the 'Connie' was in the capable hands of TWA's most experienced pilot, President Frye. In no time the Connie reached Washington National Airport (DCA) after circling once it swooped in for a perfect touch down amid a waiting crowd of military leaders, reporters, and civilian guests. The swift 2400-mile flight was over. Cross-country record-- 6 hrs. 58 min. with average cruise speed of 327 M.P.H.
At the Statler Hotel (now the Capitol Hilton in Washington D.C.) Jack and Helen Frye host a party for 1500 guests in the Presidential Dining Room, this to commemorate the record flight of the Constellation just days earlier, the world’s largest land-based transport. Howard Hughes attends too, and contrary to popular rumor of the day which states Howard never shakes hands out of fear of germs, he stands by graciously beside Jack and Helen and proudly shakes nearly 1000 of them! This promo, hosted by the Fryes and Transcontinental & Western Air, celebrates the future of TWA, a grand introduction to Trans-World air travel via the futuristic Constellation airliner, an event all but forgotten today!
Jack and Howard intended to build a fleet of Constellations for TWA and make all other airlines obsolete-- the very first fast planes. This is why they were building the plane in secret. Unfortunately, with the onset of the war, the Army asked what they were doing. Subsequently, a deal was made, whereby TWA would fly the planes for the Army Air Force. Helen Frye- (1974) Red Rock News
The Constellation Flight was quite a drain on me, and I, like you, would have liked nothing better than to have been along. I am glad that it’s over with; it’s been on my mind for five years. Those maiden flights always cause some anxiety. Helen Frye (July 03, 1944). Letter to Robby Robinson, Jack & Helen's Lockheed Electra Jr. NC18137 TWA pilot.
'The foundation of TWA was seeded with dreams, dedication, and hard work.'

TWA - Trans World Airlines at Lambert St Louis Airport - Flying into History -
Many TWAer's saw my DVD video called Flying into History. It was my attempt to collate footage, photos and audio that I had collected of TWA at various points during my teenage years.
Trans World Airlines holds a very special place in my memories. The first flight I took was in 1988 on board a Boeing 767-200 from London Gatwick to Baltimore. The reason for the flight was for medical treatment for my brother who had been diagnosed as one of the first children in the UK with ALD - Adrenoleukodystrophy (Lorenzo's Oil).
The treatment we received on that flight was second to none. One of the crew even took my family and I on a sightseeing tour of Washington DC. I was allowed to sit in the cockpit when at the gate at LGW. I was transfixed by aircraft from this moment. When I returned home I found out about TWA, it's history, it's difficulties, and I was even more interested. I then began writing to the London Offices for any information or promotional items - anything TWA! I amassed a number of timetables and Ambassadors magazines as a result!
At a very challenging point in my life, aviation spoke to me - much as it does today.
I had an idea, having recently re-mastered / re-edited some footage of Russian Tupolev TU154 aircraft (rare, loud, classics!) I thought I wonder if I could do something similar to some of my TWA footage.
This is the result. A few things to note;
1. The original footage was filmed in digital format only (it wasn't even HD!)
2. The original footage was in 4 x 3 format (it wasn't widescreen!)
3. The footage was all handheld, filmed through glass.
4. This was the first 'proper' footage I really tried to get of aircraft - a skill and technique that has been developed, challenged and honed over many, many years now!
Regardless of the above points, I hope you will enjoy seeing TWA and some of the operations at their hub in St Louis and a few fleeting glimpses at London Gatwick.
Thank you TWA for giving me my interest. Thank you to the amazing flight attendant who did so much for us and to the manager at the London Offices who helped foster my interest.
TWA was taken over in 2001 by American Airlines. I am aware that many staff were affected by this and that there are many associated issues , however I hope this video brings back some fond memories.
