California Trump Voters Reflect on the State of the Nation | NBC Left Field
What's it like to be a red dot in a blue state? Kern County, California, voted decisively for Donald Trump, drawn in part to his message as the candidate for 'the forgotten man' and his anti-liberal rhetoric and promises of deregulation and lower taxes. Roughly at the midpoint between Los Angeles and San Francisco, Bakersfield represents a crossroad for the state, where the farming and oil drilling of the past contend with the technology and environmental concerns of the future. We visit the town to find out how people feel about President Trump, the nation's future and why they think there is a divide between rural conservatives and urban liberals.

Battle Brews Over Dirty Air in CA Farm Region
(20 Jul 2017) NATALIE SUA'S CHILDREN LOVE JUMPING ON THE TRAMPOLINE IN THEIR BACKYARD.
BUT WITH TWO OF HER SIX CHILDREN SUFFERING FROM ASTHMA, THEY CAN'T ALWAYS PLAY OUTSIDE IN THEIR FRESNO NEIGHBORHOOD.
SOUNDBITE Natalie Sua, Mother
We live by the train so there's always dust kicking up from the train going by and then all this smog and we have had bad air quality days so on red days they can't come out and play because their asthma will be even more active.
CENTRAL CALIFORNIA'S SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, HOME TO ONE OF THE NATION'S LARGEST FARMING INDUSTRIES, ALSO HAS ONE OF THE NATION'S HIGHEST RATES OF CHILDHOOD ASTHMA.
(Fullscreen graphic - 2016 Asthma Prevalence - ages 5-17 - Fresno County 23.6% - California 17.1% - source: California Breathing)
STATE HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY NEARLY A QUARTER OF FRESNO CHILDREN HAVE ASTHMA.
SOUNDBITE Kevin Hamilton, CEO - Central California Asthma Collaborative When I became a respiratory therapist, we all noticed in the ER that if today was a smog day, expect people through the ER that were choking and vomiting and had severe headaches.
LOCAL FARMING IS PARTIALLY TO BLAME FOR THE POLLUTION...AS IS THE VALLEY ITSELF WHICH ACTS LIKE A BOWL, TRAPPING IN THE SMOG.
HEAVY TRAFFIC ALONG THE BUSY CORRIDOR BETWEEN LOS ANGELES AND THE BAY AREA ALSO CONTRIBUTES TO THE DIRTY AIR.
(truck nats)
TWO MAJOR HIGHWAYS CARRY COUNTLESS DIESEL TRUCKS THROUGH THE REGION...
(train nats)
...WHILE SMOKE-SPEWING FREIGHT TRAINS ALSO PASS THROUGH DAY AND NIGHT.
THE REGION HAS SPENT 40 BILLION IN THE LAST QUARTER CENTURY TO ENFORCE HUNDREDS OF POLLUTION RULES...BUT IT STILL HAS SOME OF THE DIRTIEST AIR IN THE COUNTRY.
NOW THE SAN JOAQUIN AIR POLLUTION CONTROL DISTRICT FACES A SUMMER DEADLINE TO MEET FEDERAL AIR POLLUTION STANDARDS OR RISK HEAVY FINES AND PENALTIES...TWO-POINT-FIVE BILLION ANNUALLY IN HIGHWAY FUNDS COULD ALSO BE AT STAKE.
SOUNDBITE Seyed Sadredin, Executive Director - San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District: These will be devastating to the valley and all of it is from pollution from the so-called mobile sources that we have no authority at the local level to control.
THE DISTRICT IS ASKING THE STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FOR HELP BY ENFORCING STRICTER RULES ON TRUCKS AND TRAINS AND TO PROVIDE FUNDING TO IMPROVE THEM.
SOUNDBITE Seyed Sadredin, Executive Director - San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District: We can help these truckers, for instance, pay half the cost of purchasing a new truck that's 90 percent cleaner.
AT THE SAME TIME, THE DISTRICT WANTS RULES CHANGED UNDER THE LANDMARK FEDERAL CLEAN AIR ACT SO IT CAN'T BE PENALIZED FOR POLLUTION VIOLATIONS OUT OF IT CONTROL
ENVIRONMENTALISTS AND LOCAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS SAY THAT WON'T MAKE THE AIR HEALTHIER.
SOUNDBITE Kevin Hamilton, CEO - Central California Asthma Collaborative:
We need government to be able to say wait a minute, you've gone too far. People are dying. You're effecting their health. You can't do that.
(Fullscreen graphic - Source: California Air Resources Control Board)
ACCORDING TO THE CALIFORNIA AIR RESOURCES CONTROL BOARD, ABOUT 12 HUNDRED PEOPLE EACH YEAR DIE PREMATURELY FROM THE VALLEY'S POLLUTED AIR.
THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY SAYS IT WILL WORK WITH THE DISTRICT TO HELP MEET THE REQUIREMENTS.
BUT IT DOESN'T HELP THE FAMILIES NOW LIKE THE SUA'S.
SOUNDBITE Natalie Sua, Mother:
I wish I could just get up and relocate but it's kind of hard. You just have to deal with it.
SHE PLANS TO KEEP HER CHILDREN INDOORS THIS SUMMER AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

What Would Happen if “The BIG ONE” (Earthquake) Hits the WEST COAST
When most people think of the “Big One,” they often think about an earthquake caused by the San Andreas Fault. However, there’s actually a more dangerous fault called the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The Cascadia Subduction Zone, also known as the Cascadia Fault, is almost 700 miles long and stretches the west coast of North America from Vancouver Island to Northern California. For some perspective, an earthquake caused by the San Andreas Fault could reach 8.3 on the Richter scale, but a Cascadia earthquake will be more like a 9.2. That means that the quake could shake for up to four and a half minutes.
