York city centre, York, England, United Kingdom, Europe
York is a walled city, situated at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, England. The city has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events throughout much of its two millennia of existence. The city offers a wealth of historic attractions, of which York Minster is the most prominent, and a variety of cultural and sporting activities. The city was founded by the Romans in 71 AD, under the name of Eboracum. It became in turn the capital of the Roman province of Britannia Inferior, and of the kingdoms of Northumbria and Jorvik. In the Middle Ages, York grew as a major wool trading centre and became the capital of the northern ecclesiastical province of the Church of England, a role it has retained. In the 19th century, York became a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre. In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway-related industries to one that provides services. The University of York and health services have become major employers, whilst tourism has become an important element of the local economy. From 1996, the term City of York describes a unitary authority area which includes rural areas beyond the old city boundaries. In 2001 the urban area had a population of 137,505, while in 2010 the entire unitary authority had an estimated population of 202,400. The railway promoter George Hudson was responsible for bringing the railway to York in 1839. Although Hudson's career as a railway entrepreneur eventually ended in disgrace and bankruptcy, his promotion of his own railway company, the York and North Midland Railway and of York over Leeds, helped establish York as a major railway centre by the late 1800s. The introduction of the railways also established engineering in the city. At the turn of the 20th century, the railway accommodated the headquarters and works of the North Eastern Railway, which employed over 5,500 people in York. The railway was also instrumental in the expansion of Rowntree's Cocoa Works. Rowntree's was founded in York in 1862 by Henry Isaac Rowntree, who was joined in 1869 by his brother the philanthropist Joseph Rowntree. Another chocolate manufacturer, Terry's of York was also a major employer. By 1900 the railways and confectionery had become the two major industries of the city. With the emergence of tourism as a major industry, the historic core of York became one of the city's major assets, and in 1968 it was designated a conservation area. The existing tourist attractions were supplemented by the establishment of the National Railway Museum in York in 1975 and the Jorvik Viking Centre in 1984. The opening of the University of York in 1963 added to the prosperity of the city. York was voted as European Tourism City of the Year by European Cities Marketing in June 2007. York beat 130 other European cities to gain first place, surpassing Gothenburg in Sweden (second) and Valencia in Spain (third). York lies within the Vale of York, a flat area of fertile arable land bordered by the Pennines, the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds The original city was built at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss on a terminal moraine left by the last Ice Age. During Roman times, the land surrounding the rivers Ouse and Foss was very marshy, making the site easier to defend. The city is prone to flooding from the River Ouse, and has an extensive (and mostly effective) network of flood defences. These include walls along the Ouse, and a liftable barrier across the River Foss where it joins the Ouse at the 'Blue Bridge'. In October and November 2000 York experienced the worst flooding in 375 years with over 300 homes being flooded. Much land in and around the city is on flood plains and has always been too flood-prone for development other than agriculture. The ings are flood meadows along the River Ouse, while the strays are open common grassland in various locations around the city. York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, stands at the city's centre. York Castle, a complex of buildings ranging from the medieval Clifford's Tower to the 20th century entrance to the York Castle Museum (formerly a prison) has had a chequered history. York's centre is enclosed by the city's medieval walls, which are a popular walk. These defences are the most complete in England. They have the only walls set on high ramparts and they retain all their principal gateways. They incorporate part of the walls of the Roman fortress and some Norman and medieval work, as well as 19th- and 20th-century renovations.

York England three museums
There are three major museums in York in the UK that you would probably enjoy visiting: the Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum of history and National Railway Museum. Three of Great Britain's main museums in one historic town.
The Castle Museum is one of the greatest attractions of York, easy to walk to on the south edge of the old town.
The Castle Museum contains a remarkable assortment of items with a special focus on the late 19th century, at the dawn of the modern age, when technology went through rapid changes.
Next we visit the Yorkshire Museum which takes you from prehistoric times up through the 16th century with a large collection of Roman and Viking artifacts especially. The museum was founded in 1830, making it one of the oldest in the country. The museum displays a number of Roman objects which have been discovered in York.
Another one of the top attractions in York is England’s largest railway museum, located adjacent to the train station,
The museum is a five-minute walk from the railway station either via a staircase from the station platforms or on the road just to the south. The National Railway Museum tells the story of rail transport in Britain and its impact on society. It is one of the world’s largest railway museums, perhaps the best, and it covers 20 acres, attracting nearly one million annual visitors, featuring 103 locomotives and nearly 300 other rail cars.
It should be no surprise that interest in railroads is advanced here because this region has a long history of pioneering train travel. The first station opened in 1839, just ten years after the British invented the steam locomotive. Rapid expansion of train services required a larger station, which opened in 1877 as the largest train station in Europe, and the original steel and glass structure still functions today. Trains still provide a great way to get to York.

YORK WALK | Clifford's Tower in York, England
A short walk around Clifford's Tower in the historic city of York in Yorkshire, England.
We begin at the base of Clifford's Tower on Tower Street in the centre of York. We are looking up at what was is part of York Castle and what was once a prison and a mint.
Clifford's Tower is one of the most popular visitor and tourist attractions for people coming to York and is situated close to the River Ouse and at the side of York Castle Museum and York Crown Court.
The buildings in this part of York as as you would expect. Beautiful and historic in equal measure. It's easy to see why York is one of the most busy and popular tourist destinations in England as people flock to walk around this amazing place.
Clifford's Tower offers panoramic views of the city of York and is the ideal starting place for any trip to York.
It's pretty much all that remains from York Castle after the castle was raised by William The Conqueror. From Clifford's Tower you can see York Minster and views of the City Of York as well as getting a birdseye view of the overall area.
Built by William the Conqueror to strengthen his military grip on the north, the mound of Clifford's Tower is all that remains of his original castle. It was one of the two motte and bailey castles he built in York in 1068-69. The mound of the second, now known as the 'Old Baile', can be seen across the river from the tower.
The tower housed some famous prisoners during its time as a gaol.
Also imprisoned in the tower was the notorious highwayman, Dick Turpin, captured under the alias 'Palmer'. However a letter he wrote from the tower allowed his true identity to be revealed, through his handwriting, and he was executed in York on 7 April 1739.
Clifford’s Tower is one of the best-loved landmarks in York. It is the largest remaining part of York Castle, once the centre of government for the north of England.
The 11th-century timber tower on top of the earth mound was burned down in 1190, after York’s Jewish community, some 150 strong, was besieged here by a mob and committed mass suicide. The present 13th-century stone tower was probably used as a treasury and later as a prison.
Archaeological evidence shows that there was activity in this area in Roman times (with a Roman cemetery lying across the site)[1] and perhaps even earlier, but it was William the Conqueror who first established a castle here
When he marched north in 1068 to suppress a rebellion against his rule, he built a series of castles as he went, including one here where Clifford’s Tower now stands.
The Norman motte-and-bailey castle saw several violent incidents during its earliest years, including further revolts and an attack by Danish invaders.
As the political situation settled down in the 1070s, however, the damage of these early years was repaired, and the castle, built largely of earth and timber, probably survived relatively unaltered through most of the 12th century.
The castle of York was the setting for one of the most notorious events in English history: the mass suicide and massacre in March 1190 of York’s Jewish community.
Tensions between Christians and Jews had been increasing throughout England during the 12th century, partly because many people were in debt to Jewish moneylenders and partly because much crusading propaganda was directed not only against Muslims but also against Jews.
Anti-Jewish riots in several cities followed the coronation of the crusader king Richard I in 1189, and a rumour (untrue) was put about that he had ordered a massacre of the Jews.
In York, as described by William of Newburgh and other contemporary chroniclers, about 150 people from the Jewish community were given protective custody in the royal castle, probably the site of Clifford’s Tower.
Somehow, though, trust between the royal officials and the Jews broke down. The officials, finding themselves shut out from the tower, summoned reinforcements to recapture it. These troops were joined by a large mob, which soon ran out of control, incited by both anti-Jewish preachers and local gentry eager to escape their debts.
On 16 March, the eve of the Sabbath before Passover, when the Jews realised that there would be no safe way out for them, a rabbi urged his fellow-inmates in the tower to commit suicide rather than fall into the hands of their persecutors.
Heads of households killed their own families before killing themselves, and the wooden tower itself was set on fire.
According to several accounts a number of Jews did survive and came out of the tower under an amnesty, only to be murdered by the attackers. A plaque at the base of the mound, commemorating these events, was installed in 1978.
Though Jewish life did in fact revive in York within a few years of the massacre, it came to an end a hundred years later, in 1290, when Edward I expelled all Jews from England. This time their exile lasted until the 17th century.

York England historic center
The city of York is England's finest example of a medieval town -- so well-preserved that it looks like you took a wrong turn somewhere back in 1335 and got stuck in time when you walk down these narrow lanes line with the ancient original buildings it's like walking through an outdoor museum but it's very much lively and functioning city.
So well-preserved that it's become one of the world’s most interesting historic cities with a rich mix of activities for the visitor.
This town is surrounded by its original medieval high stone walls that protected it from attackers in the past and since then it's protected the town from modernization because you'll find that the old historic area within these walls is looking like it's about 500 years old and many of the buildings in fact are older.
We’re showing highlights of our visit, the very best of York, one of the finest towns in the UK.

York, England - February 2018
Our weekend away in York. Amazing city with so much character and so so many pubs.
York , North Yorkshire , England
This is my personal tribute on this very nice english city located in the region of the Yorkshire .
York is a walled city, situated at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, England. The city has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events throughout much of its two millennia of existence.
The city was founded by the Romans in 71 AD. They called it Eboracum, a name perhaps derived from one used by the British tribes who inhabited the area. The Romans made it the capital of their Province of Britannia Inferior. At the end of Roman rule in 415 AD the settlement was taken over by the Angles and the city became known as Eoforwic. The city came to be the episcopal, and later, royal centre of the Kingdom of Northumbria. The Vikings captured the city in 866 AD, and for the period between 866 and the final incorporation of Northumbria into the Kingdom of England in 954, York is sometimes referred to by modern writers by its Scandinavianised form, Jórvík. The name in its modern form York was first used in the 13th century. In the Middle Ages York grew as a major wool trading centre and the ecclesiastical capital of the northern province of England. The Province of York has remained one of the two Church of England ecclesiastical provinces, along with that of Canterbury.
York's location on the River Ouse, in the centre of the Vale of York and half way between the capitals of London and Edinburgh means that it has long had a significant position in the nation's transport system. The 19th century saw York, under the influence of George Hudson, become an important hub of the railway network and a manufacturing centre. In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway-related industries to one that provides services. The University of York and health services have become major employers. Tourism also boosts the local economy because the city offers a wealth of historic attractions, of which York Minster is the most prominent, and a variety of cultural activities. In 2009 it was the 7th most visited city by UK residents and the 13th most visited by overseas visitors. York Racecourse and Bootham Crescent, the home of York City FC, are the most prominent sporting venues in the city and the River Ouse provides opportunities for both sporting and leisure pursuits.
From 1996, the term City of York describes a unitary authority area which includes rural areas beyond the old city boundaries. In 2001 the urban area had a population of 137,505, while in 2007 the entire unitary authority had an estimated population of 193,300.
York Minster, the second largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, stands at the city's centre.[115] York's centre is enclosed by the city's medieval walls, which are a popular walk.[116] The entire circuit is about 3 miles (5 km), including a part where walls never existed, because the Norman moat of York Castle, formed by damming the River Foss, also created a lake which acted as a city defence. This lake was later called the King's Fishpond, as the rights to fish belonged to the Crown.
Clifford's Tower, a stone quatrefoil keep built on top of a Norman motte, was the site of a massacre in 1190 when the small Jewish community of York sought protection in the tower on the feast of Shabbat ha-Gadol. Many Jews took their own lives rather than face a violent mob in an event regarded as one of the most notorious examples of antisemitism in medieval England.
