The fauna of the United States of America is all the animals living in the Continental United States and its surrounding seas and islands, the Hawaiian Archipelago, Alaska in the Arctic, and several island-territories in the Pacific and in the Caribbean. The U.S. has many distinctive indigenous species found nowhere else on Earth. With most of the North American continent, the U.S. lies in the Nearctic faunistic realm, a region containing an assemblage of species similar to northern parts of Africa and Eurasia.An estimated 432 species of mammals characterize the fauna of the continental U.S. There are more than 800 species of bird and more than 100,000 known species of insects. There are 311 known reptiles, 295 amphibians and 1154 known fish species in the U.S. Known animals that exist in all of the lower 48 states include white-tailed deer, bobcat, raccoon, muskrat, striped skunk, barn owl, American mink, American beaver, North American river otter and red fox. The red-tailed hawk is one of the most widely distributed hawks not only in the U.S., but in the Americas. Huge parts of the country with the most distinctive indigenous wildlife are protected as national parks. In 2013, the U.S. had more than 6770 national parks or protected areas, all together more than 1,006,619 sq. miles . The first national park was Yellowstone National Park in the state of Wyoming, established in 1872. Yellowstone National Park is widely considered to be the finest megafauna wildlife habitat in the U.S. There are 67 species of mammals in the park, including the gray wolf, the threatened lynx, and the grizzly bear.

Painted Cave, located in the northwestern coastline of Santa Cruz Island, is one of the largest and deepest sea caves in the world. Its colorful rock types, lichens, and algae are forming colored formation that are the reason of its evocative name. Painted Cave is nearly a quarter mile long and 100 feet wide, with an entrance ceiling of 160 feet. During spring it is possible to enjoy also a beautiful waterfall over the entrance.

Kayaking The Sea Caves of the Channel Islands (Santa Cruz Island California)

We have done many kayak trips on our own as well as with guided tours like this one, and this was definitely one of our favourite experiences. Our guide Erin from Santa Barbara Adventure Company (which organized a group with similar skill and risk tolerance) provided us just the right combination of adventure and safety. He carefully explained each cave and the current dynamics based on wind, tide, and waves, so we could make our own choice about which caves to try and what to expect (as well as being close by or inside the cave to offer assistance). He also made sure to support people with individual interests in certain types of wildlife, and the island offers many indigenous species and also some very unique plant life. The boat ride to and from the island takes about an hour. On the way back the boat made a few loops in the ocean so we could enjoy a pod of dolphins that was engaging with the wake of the boat and showing off for us all. After kayaking there is plenty of time for taking a hike on the island, you can look down from the top of the cliffs at the various bays and coves that you kayaked earlier in the day. Great fun!

Our 246th National Park, the Channel Islands off the coast of Los
Angeles, California provide a delightful break from the congestion and clamor of urban life. The islands are ideal for quiet, uninterrupted time with family and friends -wonderful places to hike, camp, snorkel, kayak, bird watch, take photographs, sketch, or just relax to the soothing sounds of the natural world. And getting there is part of the fun. We enjoyed the beautiful marina, seals and whales along the way.

We love kayaking and the area of the park that is most popular for sea kayaking is centered around Scorpion Beach on East Santa Cruz Island. This location is a world class destination for sea kayaking because of easy beach access, clear ocean waters, nearby camping, readily available concessionaire boat transportation service and a spectacular shoreline with beautiful sea caves and cliffs to explore. California 101: Channel Islands National Park

The Channel Islands National Park encompasses five islands off the Southern California coast where wraparound beauty and abundant plant and animal life are the star attractions. SANTA CRUZ ISLAND AND CHANNEL ISLAND NATIONAL PARK TOUR

This week, I visited Santa Cruz Island, the largest of the Channel Islands off the coast of Ventura with Island Packers. Five of the eight islands are a National Park and often referred to as the Galapagos of North America since they have many indigenous species of flora and fauna.

The boat ride to the island is about an hour, complete with some rare blue whale sightings. Once the island came into view, we saw sheer cliffs and sea caves in every direction. We docked on a makeshift harbor called Scorpion Harbor where we received a quick orientation from the National Park Services. The island is completely bare, except for remnants of an old 1880's ranch house called Scorpion Ranch, a primitive campground, and some kayak rentals. There is a camp site on the island for those who want to stay overnight.

We hiked up Cavern Point Loop which offers magnificent views of the harbor and sea caves. It reminded me of what California must have looked like before it was developed. The coast was rugged and covered in native golden chaparral. The water was see-through and abundant with kelp beds. While in the campground, we spotted a few island foxes, which are on the endangered species list.

Place LA: Trip to Santa Cruz Island with Friends of the Island Fox

On June 1, 2013, we joined the Friends of the Island Fox ( for a trip to Santa Cruz Island, part of Channel Islands National Park. After a 1.5 hour boat ride to Prisoner's Harbor, we hiked about, inspected the newly restored wetlands, saw the Channel Island Scrub Jay, island specific flora and, of course, the Channel Island Fox, an endangered species that only lives on the Channel Islands of California.

Kayaking thru Cave at Santa Cruz Island in Channel Islands National Park

There is a cool cave that you can kayak thru at Santa Cruz Island in Channel Islands National Park. The cave is located in some rocks that separate Scorpions anchorage from Little Scorpions anchorage. My friend Juan and I did some ocean spelunking.
