We’re happy to be part of your community, and proud to offer unique products at prices everyone can afford, every day.
In 1958, Joe Coulombe took over a small chain of convenience stores around the LA area. These were called Pronto Markets. The whole idea was fast. Pronto – quick, right? And they were convenience stores, before we really even know what convenience stores were. The kind of place where you could get anything from, say, a pack of gum to some pantyhose.
After 10 years of running Pronto Markets, the convenience store formula just didn’t continue to make sense. So, Joe, the classic entrepreneur, took note that the demographics were changing in the United States because of the G.I. Bill of Rights, a large experiment in mass higher education, and identified an opportunity to deliver… something different.
The first Trader Joe’s store opened in 1967 in Pasadena, California. (That store is still there. It's still operating. It still has the same parking lot.) The store had a nautical theme and it was run by people who were described as “traders on the high seas.” At the time, Joe had been reading a book called White Shadows in the South Seas, and he’d been to the Disneyland Jungle Trip ride, and it all just…coalesced. To this day, Trader Joe’s Crew Members consider themselves “traders on the culinary seas” and are known for their bright, tropical-patterned shirts and for generally being nice, helpful, and well informed.
And then in 1972, Joe introduced a total game changer for Trader Joe's... Granola. Not just any granola, though. This was the first private label Trader Joe's product. After granola, we never looked back.
Focusing on private label (products with “Trader Joe’s” name on them) simplified a lot of things, and removed a lot of costs – no more slotting fees, marketing fees, middlemen fees… We passed along those savings to our customers (still do), because the value of Value is invaluable. And to us, “Value” means offering the best quality products for the best, everyday prices.
We understood then, as we do today, that maintaining our everyday focus on Value is vital, which is why we don’t have sales, loyalty programs, membership fees, or any other gimmicks. Instead, here is what we do:
We buy direct from suppliers whenever possible, we bargain hard to get the best price, and then pass the savings on to you.
If an item doesn’t pull its weight in our stores, it goes away to gangway for something else.
We buy in volume and contract early to get the best prices.
Most grocers charge their suppliers fees for putting an item on the shelf. This results in higher prices... so we don’t do it.
We keep our costs low—because every penny we save is a penny you save.
So, where were we…?
In 1988, when Joe retired, Trader Joe's had 19 stores. John Shields took over as CEO, and saw the opportunity to transfer this grocery store concept across geographical boundaries, starting with entry into Northern California. Then came Arizona, followed by the Pacific Northwest, and… by 1996 we had opened our doors on the East Coast. John understood that de-centralized and aligned decision-making would help to facilitate our growth. Nearly a decade later, there were 150 Trader Joe’s stores across the country.
In 2001, Dan Bane assumed the role of Chairman and CEO and focused on making us a national chain of neighborhood grocery stores. Today, we have 488 stores in 41 states and the District of Columbia, and counting…
Okay, we skipped over a few milestones, but you can catch them in the Trader Joe’s Timeline. It’s a trip.

Great location, wonderful staff, fun experience with the pool table and games. Fire pits were wonderful! Bed was tremendously comfortable!
Minuses:
No Bar. Paper cups for the coffee machine.
I would have liked to not find dark hairs in my bed sheets or in the bathroom.
Some of the amenities of the room were a bit old. Refrigerator did not work and ironing board kept collapsing. Bathroom is a bit small for the price.

C Restaurant, Cannery Row, Monterey, California, USA
The C Restaurant, at the Intercontinental Hotel****l the Clement Monterey Cannery Row, Monterey, California, USA in our opinion one of the best, if not the best, in Monterey. Chef Jerry Register, has created a simple but very pleasant menu that is extremely well prepared with well matched ingredients and tastes and a menu that should appeal to most preferences. He should since he has a great background amongst other things having worked at Domaine Chandon in Napa Valley as sous chef under well known Executive Chef Philip Jeanty. The dining room is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and has a window wall providing endless sea and bay vistas as you enjoy your meal. There is also a cafe setting outside with tables on the board walk shaded by market umbrellas, weather permitting.

King salmon rebounds after Calif. drought
(22 Aug 2019) Trawling off the California coast, Sarah Bates leans over the side of her boat and pulls out a long, silvery fish prized by anglers and seafood lovers: wild king salmon.
If you have a fish on the end of a string, it feels good every time, said Bates, a commercial troller based in San Francisco. This year has been surprisingly good. There have been a lot more fish this year than were predicted.
California fishermen are reporting one of the best salmon fishing seasons in years, thanks to heavy rain and snow that ended the state's historic drought.
It's a sharp reversal for chinook salmon, also known as king salmon, an iconic species that helps sustain many Pacific Coast fishing communities.
Commercial salmon catches have so far surpassed official preseason forecasts by about 50 percent, said Kandice Morgenstern, a marine scientist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Harvests have been particularly strong in Morro Bay, Monterey and San Francisco, but weaker along California's northern coast.
The salmon rebound comes after three years of extremely low catches that resulted from poor ocean conditions and California's five-year drought, which drained the state's rivers and reservoirs.
Over the past several years, regulators imposed severe fishing restrictions to protect chinook salmon, and officials declared federal fishery disasters in 2018 to assist fishing communities in California, Oregon and Washington.
This year's adult salmon are the first class to benefit from record rainfall that filled California rivers and streams in early 2017, making it easier for juvenile chinook to migrate to the Pacific Ocean, where they grow into full-size fish.
Chinook salmon are also being helped by improved ocean conditions that have produced an abundance of anchovies, krill and other feed. Several years ago, an El Nino event brought unusually warm water to the Pacific Coast and disrupted the marine ecosystem.
For the salmon fishermen who've been dealing with disaster for so long, this is an incredible boon to their livelihoods, said Noah Oppenheim, who heads the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations.
The strong salmon season, which typically runs from May to October, is positive environmental news at a time of growing anxiety about climate change. A United Nations report released this month warns that global warming threatens food supplies worldwide.
Most of the chinook salmon being caught now come from the Sacramento River and its tributaries, where they spawn. Many were raised in state-run hatcheries, then released into rivers to swim to the ocean. Harvests of chinook from rivers further north have not been strong.
The bountiful harvest has driven down wild salmon prices to $15 to $20 per pound, compared with $30 to $35 per pound in recent years. Fishermen are making up for the difference by catching more fish.
The market is dictating right now that there's a lot of salmon, so the customers don't have to pay as much, said Gordon Drysdale, culinary director at Scoma's, a seafood restaurant at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf.
Fisherman's Wharf is one of many California fishing communities now benefiting from the salmon boom. Pier 45, where boats unload their catches, hasn't been this busy in many years, said Larry Collins, who runs the San Francisco Community Fishing Association.
This year started out with a bang, and it's just kept banging the whole time, Collins said.
