Explained: The Tree That Owns Itself
The weird case of a tree that might own itself. Or maybe not. It's complicated.
This video was supposed to be uploaded a week ago but I had internet troubles, next video will be the 1000 subscriber Q&A (go and ask me questions).
Tree That Legally OWNS Itself and has a KID
???? Subscribe for weekly interesting videos:
Believe it or not, there’s tree that actually owns itself in Athens, Georgia. According to the legend, this tree has a legal ownership of itself and all the land within eight feet of its base.
It even has a name, Jackson Oak, coming from its origin – white oaks, the preeminent species of hardwoods in eastern and central North America.
The history of the tree dates back to when a front-page article appeared in the Athens Weekly Banner on 12 August 1890, entitled ‘Deeded to itself’. The article referred to this particular tree that’s been located on the property of Colonel William Henry Jackson, the son of James Jackson. James Jackson was a soldier in the American Revolution, as well as a Congressman, U.S. Senator, and Governor of Georgia, and also a father to another James Jackson. His son was a Congressman and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia.

1. Georgia is a state in the southeastern United States. It began as a British colony in 1733, the last of the original Thirteen Colonies. Named after King George II of Great Britain, the Province of Georgia covered the area from South Carolina down to Spanish Florida and New France along Louisiana (New France), also bordering to the west towards the Mississippi River. Georgia was the fourth state to ratify the United States Constitution, on January 2, 1788. Georgia declared its secession from the Union on January 19, 1861, and was one of the original seven Confederate states. It was the last state to be restored to the Union, on July 15, 1870.
2. Coca-Cola was invented in May 1886 by Dr. John S. Pemberton in Atlanta, Georgia. The name Coca-Cola was suggested by Dr. Pemberton's bookkeeper, Frank Robinson. He penned the name Coca-Cola in the flowing script that is famous today. Coca-Cola was first sold at a soda fountain in Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta by Willis Venable.
3. The figures of Stonewall Jackson, Jefferson Davis, and Robert E. Lee make up the world's largest sculpture. It is located on the face of Stone Mountain. Additionally Robert E. Lee's horse, Traveler, is also carved at the same place.
4. There is a tree in Athens, Georgia, that owns itself and an 8 foot radius of land. Professor William Jackson deeded the tree and the land to the tree in the early 19th century. That tree blew down in the '40s and was replaced with a new tree from the original’s acorn.
5. Atlanta is known as the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement; you can find Martin Luther King Jr.’s house on Auburn Ave.
6. Atlanta is the capital of and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Georgia. In 1837, Atlanta was founded at the intersection of two railroad lines, and the city rose from the ashes of the American Civil War to become a national center of commerce.
7. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park safeguards the sites of two major battles of the American Civil War: the Battle of Chickamauga and the Chattanooga Campaign making it the site of the bloodiest battle in American history.

All Community Meeting - NBAF Athens,GA
NBAF, the Department of Homeland Security's proposed monster-sized deadly pathogen research laboratory (bigger than FIVE Wal-marts) could soon be imposing itself onto our community, on South Milledge Avenue, adjacent to the State Botanical Garden and overlooking the Oconee River. This would hugely and adversely affect our environment and quality of life.
• For all who have heard the hype, it is time to learn the truth.
• For those who are unaware of NBAF and the devastation it could wreak on the peaceful, quiet enjoyment of our towns and surrounding neighborhoods, it is time to become informed.
F.A.Q. inc. an Athens-based non-profit citizens' awareness organization working For Athens Quality-of- Life, is sponsoring an all-community meeting Tuesday, January 22, 2008 beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.
The guest speaker will be Edward Hammond, U. S. Director of The Sunshine Project (sunshine-project.org.), the international watchdog organization that monitors the proliferation and mismanagement of highly dangerous pathogen laboratories in the U.S. and abroad. His talk is titled Germs, Weapons and Secrets: the Proliferation of Bio-defense Labs in the United States. All residents of Athens-Clarke County, Oconee County and surrounding communities should hear what he has to say. A question-answer period will follow the talk.
This may be the most important community meeting you will ever attend!
Everyone is invited. It's free. It's vital to our quality of life. Note the time and date on your calendar: January 22, 2008 at 7:00pm at the UGA Center for Continuing Education, 1197 Lumpkin Street. Please attend!

Athens, Georgia
Athens (formally known as Athens-Clarke County) is a consolidated city–county in the U.S. state of Georgia, in the northeastern part of the state, comprising the former city of Athens proper (the county seat) and Clarke County. The University of Georgia, the state's flagship public research university, is located in this college town, and contributed to its initial growth. In 1991, after a vote the preceding year, the original city abandoned its charter to form a unified government with Clarke County, referred to collectively as Athens-Clarke County. As of the 2010 census, the consolidated city-county (including all of Athens-Clarke County except Winterville and a portion of Bogart) had a total population of 115,452; all of Clarke County had a population of 116,714. Athens is the fifth largest city in Georgia, and the principal city of the Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 192,541 as of the 2010 census. Athens-Clarke County has the smallest geographical area of a county in Georgia.

The real goal of the Earth Charter is that it will in fact become like the Ten Commandments.
— Maurice Strong
Do not do unto the environment of others what you do not want done to your own environment....My hope is that this charter will be a kind of Ten Commandments, a 'Sermon on the Mount', that provides a guide for human behavior toward the environment in the next century.
— Mikhail Gorbachev, The Los Angeles Times, May 8, 1997
The threat of environmental crisis will be the 'international disaster key' that will unlock the New World Order. - (Mikhail Gorbachev Quoted in 'A Special Report: The Wildlands Project Unleashes Its War On Mankind', by Marilyn Brannan, Associate Editor, Monetary & Economic Review, 1996, p.5).
The common enemy of humanity is man. In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill. All these dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy then, is humanity itself. - Club of Rome (international think tank) The First Global Revolution report, 1992
The environmental movement promises to bring greater numbers into our orbit than the peace movement ever did. - Carl Bloice (Communist)

Political Campaigns: Crash Course Government and Politics #39
So political campaigns are a pretty big deal in the United States. For instance the 2012 presidential election clocked in at the most expensive ever - at around $6 billion dollars! Needless to say, money plays a very big role in American elections. So today, Craig is going to take a look at why we have campaigns in the first place, why the campaign seasons run for so long, and of course why campaigns cost so much.

Bodycam Shows Police Shootout With Armed Carjacking Suspect in Florida
** (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) **
An armed suspect who fired at Volusia County sheriff’s deputies was fatally wounded Thursday afternoon and a VCSO sergeant survived with a grazing gunshot wound to the head in a shooting that erupted near Interstate 4 after the suspect carjacked a woman at gunpoint in Deltona, led deputies on a pursuit to the DeLand area and appeared to be ready to carjack another innocent person. The initial carjacking was reported around 2:21 p.m. at a home on the 2500 block of Ludlow Street in Deltona, where the victim said a man got in her truck, pointed a gun at her, demanded her keys and then took off in the vehicle. Deputies attempted to stop the stolen truck in Deltona, but the suspect continued fleeing erratically. At one point, the suspect swerved at a deputy who deployed stop sticks on the truck. As he fled, the suspect appeared to be waving a handgun out the driver’s side window.
After several stop stick hits, with all four tires appearing to be deflated, the truck slowed to a crawl and came to a stop on State Road 44 in front of the Volusia County Fairgrounds. The suspect got out of the truck with the gun still in his hand and ran in the direction of several motorists who were stopped on the road next to him. A deputy drove his unmarked SUV in the suspect’s direction, preventing him from reaching another potential carjacking victim, and the suspect ran the other direction and opened fire at several other responding deputies. Deputies returned fire, striking the suspect several times. Still armed with the handgun, the suspect went into the woods, where deputies ultimately took him into custody, brought him out and performed first aid before he was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The deceased is Phillip Thomas Marsh, 30 (DOB 12/7/1988), of Lake Helen. Marsh had been reported missing and suicidal earlier this week and at the time, it was noted he was known to act violently toward law enforcement and has made threats of “suicide by cop” and suicide by other means. The sergeant who received the graze wound to the head is Sgt. Thomas Dane, 54, who has been a VCSO deputy for 30 years (hire date in July 1988). Footage from Sgt. Dane’s body-worn camera indicates he was shot soon after emerging from his vehicle. His hat was found lying on the road with an entry hole next to the “SHERIFF’S K-9 UNIT” logo on the front, and an exit hole a few inches above that. He was treated and released from Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
In total, five deputies fired at Marsh. The exact number of shots fired is unconfirmed at this time. It’s believed Marsh fired multiple times. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting the official investigation into the shooting. Those who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard following a deputy-involved shooting. Sheriff Mike Chitwood, who was one of several units involved in the pursuit and was on scene during the shooting itself, commended the tactics and coordination of all involved. “Everything that they did was to try to prevent what happened – knowing that this was probably what was going to happen,” Chitwood said, adding: “I know tonight when I go home, I’ll be saying a prayer thanking the good Lord that Sgt. Dane will be back to work real soon.” The area of the incident was reopened to traffic around 8 p.m. Thursday.

Chattanooga Update - February 13, 2014
It came a little later than expected, but a snowstorm has definitely hit the Chattanooga region.
Even though plenty of snow fell overnight, we should see some melting today with sunny skies and a high near 41 degrees in the city.
Still, the storm has taken its toll.
Early this morning EPB reported 21,000 customers without power.
And more than 75 hundred have lost power in north Georgia.
In Whitfield County, authorities believe a woman died from hypothermia on Wednesday.
WRCB reports a woman's body was discovered in a home on Smith Springs Road.
Up in Bradley County, a woman and her baby have been injured after they crashed into a tree on South Lee Highway.
And here in Hamilton County, one person is dead and three injured after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 58.
Near Dayton Boulevard, a sheriff's officer was trapped in his patrol car for some time after he slid off the road.
And UTC's men's basketball game against Western Carolina has been postponed until 7 p.m. on Friday.
You can find more closings and road conditions all day long at Timesfreepress.com.

Authorities say a dad shot his two kids and then himself at a winery in McMinn County.
Officials say Stanley Striker took his own life inside the family business, Strikers Premium Winery, which is in Athens.
The children reportedly ran wounded to a neighbor for help. The boy is currently listed as critical, while the girl is in better condition.
The children's mother, Patty Striker, also died in the winery back in April 2000.
An employee found her body on the floor after she had been shot in the head, and the cash register was stolen.
Stanley was accused of killing Patty or planning her murder, but he was working at the Bowater paper plant at the time, and the lawsuit against him was dismissed.
The gun and the register were never found and that case - remains unsolved.

Senator Bob Corker says he believes Volkswagen will add a second vehicle line and hire hundreds more workers in Chattanooga if employees vote against the United Auto Workers.
Based on conversations he had Wednesday, Corker claims that if the union is voted down, in a few weeks Volkswagen will announce it's decision to build a new SUV here.
Corker says he speaks regularly with Volkswagen managers and that a union would make it more expensive to build the sports utility vehicle in Chattanooga. But UAW officials dispute that claim.
And Volkswagen maintains that the vote will not influence where the company builds its next SUV.
