Gotokuji Temple / Maneki Neko - Tokyo - 豪徳寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Hello Kitty may not actually be the most famous Japanese cat after all! It all started in 1697 according to the legend! At that time, before the Gotokuji Temple was what it is now, a poor and lonely priest was living alone with his cat. One day, during a heavy storm a rich nobleman was stranded in a heavy rainstorm and took refuge under a nearby tree. Once settled the nobleman saw the priest’s cat at the Temple’s entrance signaling him to enter. Surprised, the nobleman followed the cat and as soon as he moved toward the cat the tree was struck by lightning. Believing that the cat had saved his life the nobleman decided to become the temple’s benefactor and soon the temple became prosperous.
As you must have guessed by now, the Maneki Neko are charms for good luck and prosperity not only in Japan but all across Asia and especially in China.
Just for this story alone, Gotokuji Temple is a “must see” when visiting Tokyo. Smaller than most famous temples around Tokyo, Gotokuji is unique for its design. It’s three-storied pagoda and Kyoto-like atmosphere give even more weight to this beautiful story of the Priest’s cat and the nobleman.

Gotokuji Temple in Tokyo: Home of the Maneki Neko
Gotokuji Temple is perhaps one of the most unique temples hidden in the Setagaya Ward of Tokyo. In addition to the beautiful gardens, traditional Japanese architecture and a historical cemetary, there is a small section of the temple where you will find many (and I do mean MANY) Maneki Neki which are little statues of white cats with a raised, beckoning paw. Perhaps you have seen these cats in Japanese homes or businesses. They symbolize good luck and the hope for good fortune. Gotokuji Temple is said to be the birthplace of the Maneki Neko and the sight of all the statues placed in the temple area is quite a sight to behold. I would recommend going in Autumn as the Autumn foliage is breathtaking.
Here is the official website (click the upper corner for the English).
You can search for Gotokuji Temple and get more detailed information as well as directions on how to get there. It is about a 10 minute walk from Gotokuji station on the Odakyu Line or a 5 minute walk from Miyanosaka station on the Tokyu Setagaya LIne.

JAPAN VLOG #2: Mt. Fuji, Gotokuji Cat Temple, and Ikebukuro | eumcouple
Yaaaay! Finally, Part 2! ???? In this vlog, we visited 3 Mt. Fuji viewing spots and we did this through a KKDay bus tour. We had a lot of fun and I actually cried when we reached the last stop which was Lake Kawaguchiko. I've only ever heard about it and saw it through an anime (Yurucamp), so it felt so surreal to be actually there. That day is easily one of my favourite memories from Japan. ☺️????
The next day, we went to Setagaya to Gotokuji Temple and see the thousands(?) of Maneki Neko guarding the beautiful shrine. We tried some ramen for lunch, and it's actually a funny story because when we were ready to pay, we handed the cashier our credit card and they shook their heads and told us it was cash only. So I had to leave Mark and ran around the streets looking for an ATM lol. NTS: ALWAYS carry cash. Anyway, the last part of this video is in Ikebukuro where we accidentally stumbled across a cosplay event/anime convention. I saw a bunch of my fave characters and literally lost my mind. ????
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

Japan PM Abe Sends Offering To Yasukuni Shrine For War Dead: Kyodo
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent a ritual offering to Tokyo's controversial Yasukuni Shrine, Japan's Kyodo news agency said on Friday, a move that could complicate his push for bilateral meetings with Chinese and South Korean leaders. Abe is hoping to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and perhaps South Korean President Park Geun-hye on the sidelines of a November Asia-Pacific leaders summit in Beijing to repair ties frayed partly by feuds over the legacy of Japan's military aggression in the 1930s and 1940s.
????️Tokyo Walk - Komazawa Daigaku to Toritsu Daigaku via Komazawa Olympic Park - 4K 60 FPS - Slow TV
This is a video of a longer walk in Tokyo where I start at Komazawa Daigaku station (Setagaya Ward) on the Tokyu Den-En-Toshi-Line and finish at Toritsu Daigaku Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line (Meguro Ward). I pass through the impressive Komazawa Olympic Park on my way, where there was some sort of pet related evet going on, with a lot of people walking with cute dogs.
Most of the other parts of this video depict relatively quiet upper-middle-class residential areas in Tokyo.
This was filmed on a weekday in October 2019.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Nogi Shrine〜
This shrine honours General Nogi Maresuke, a famed commander in the Russo-Japanese War. Hours after Emperor Meiji's funerary procession in 1912, Nogi and his faithful wife committed ritual suicide, following their master into death. An antiques flea market is held on the shrine grounds on the fourth Sunday of each month (9am to 4pm).

Shoin Shrine, Hagi Yamaguchi - 松陰神社☆山口県萩市 - Japan As It Truly Is
Shoin Shrine is dedicated to Yoshida Shoin, a teacher and forerunner to those who'd bring the downfall of the Japanese Shogun.
Actually Yoshida Shoin (also called Torajiro) is one of the most interesting persons just before the start of Japan's crash course of modernization. When Commodore Perry entered Japan with American gunboat diplomacy and forced Japan to open up from its centuries of isolation, Shoin tried to board one of the US ships and stowaway to go to America. When that failed, he was jailed, but began a school and planted some of the seeds that would bring the downfall of the Shogun. He taught several pupils who would grow up as major players that would restore the Emperor to rule and open up to the West, including Japan's first Prime Minister.
Yoshida Shoin ended up being executed at age 29 in 1859 for insurrection. Without him, the Japan of today might not even exist. Here you can see the very modest school he taught at, as well as the shrine to him and tea room.
This video captures Shoin Shrine at the peak of the cherry blossom season, which is one of the best times to see it.
There is also a Shoin Shrine in Setagaya, Tokyo, dedicated to him as well.
