Montana De Oro Oats peak to Valencia peak loop june 30 2017 Don and Dave
This hike is different from the last week. We will hike out the back of the spooner campground on Reservoir flat trail. This will connect to Oats peak trail taking us to Oats peak. We will hike back to a seldom used connector from Oats peak trail hiking up Valencia trail to the Peak. Then back down the front to BeeBee trail to Oats peak then back to the parking lot. About 13+ miles. Not too strenuous. No water
Pt Buchon Trail - SLO Skiers Hike in August 2017
This was our monthly SLO Skiers hike on August 19, 2017, this time along the Pt. Buchon Trail on PG&E property near Morro Bay, CA. We had just a small group, led by Pete S., on a flat easy 6-mile hike to Breezy Point where we could see in the distance the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant, currently in the lengthy process of eventually being decommissioned. For more information on these hikes, or any of our other activities, especially ski trips, look us up on Meetup. Although we are primarily a ski club with approximately 200 members, probably 20% of our members don't ski at all, and we organize year-round activities for people interested in skiing, outdoor activities, and many social events. Oats Peak (Loose) Trail - Montana de Oro State Park, Los Osos, California
The Oats Peak Loose Descent is the less-traveled, and steeper option down from the top of the Oats Peak Trail. If you climb the entirety of the Oats Peak Trail from Spooner's Cove/Islay Creek Campground, you'll see the bottom of this trail tie in at the Valencia Peak Trail (no bikes) junction, just above the split for Beebe. To reach the beginning of this trail, hike up (or ride if you can!) to the left from the T at the end of the Oats Peak Trail climb. You'll typically encounter far fewer riders coming up this trail than you will the more gradual Oats Peak option.
The top of this trail offers some of the best views in the park!
PRO TIP: Park backed in with a view of Spooner's Cove near the trailhead, and have a couple of cold beers stashed in your car for after the ride. Sit on the hatch/tailgate/bumper and soak up some views! This ride can also start and end from Islay Creek Campground, so book a night or two there if you're visiting to get the most of Montana de Oro's killer trail network. Shout out to the Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers for putting in the man hours to build and maintain this rad little trail system!
