Much like a jelly doughnut, Vesuvio may appear to be your normal, run-of-the-mill bar on the outside, but inside you'll be surprised with a familiar colorful treat. The odd-shaped corner building on Columbus Street ads to this dive bar's charm. It's decorated in a very 'Cheers-esque' style, which ads to the friendly feeling that keeps locals and tourists alike coming back. We found ourselves wondering how old this bar really is- much of the wood bar and hand railings look to be original and loved with use. Visions of many famous road-blocked novel writers and celebrities trying to lay low spring to mind. This place has history and soul. Sure, there's beer, wine, and well made classic cocktails, however one comes to Vesuvio for a San Francisco experience. Also, we didn't realize until after leaving that there were no TVs at the bar -a bold decision by typical dive standards- however we think it lets people focus on their conversation & removes distractions. With plenty of booths, tables, and bar stools, you wont have any difficulty finding a space for your group of friends- Vesuvio's layout was well thought out for a bar with such history. Order an Irish Coffee or an Anchor Steam and take in all that is San Francisco.

차이나 타운과 가까운 곳의 노스비치. 이탈리아인들이 정착해 작은 이탈리아로 불리던 곳이다. 이곳 사람들은 자유분방하고 기분 좋게 들떠있다. 노스비치가 더욱 유명한 건 비트 세대 작가들의 흔적 때문이다. 이 카페는 비트 세대작가들이 모이는 아지트 같은 역할을 했다. 세계 최고의 경제 발전을 이루던 미국의 1950년대. 물질적 가치만 우선시하던 사회분위기에서 벗어나고자한 젊은 날의 초상과도 같은 작가들. 카페 골목길은 비트세대를 기리며 잭 케루악 골목으로 불린다. 강렬한 멕시코 혁명에 관한 벽화는 이상향을 추구하던 비트세대를 닮았다. 카페 옆 서점은 비트 세대의 정신적 지주와 같은 역할을 했다. 공장 굴뚝과 기계만 가득한 삶이 표현하지 못하는 젊은이들만의 감성으로 쓴 시를 낭송하던 곳이다. 이들의 자유로운 생각은 아직도 세계 각국의 젊은이들에게 많은 영향을 주고 있다.

After taking a video-hunting hiatus to San Francisco, I bring you a new episode on possibly the coolest Old School bar in The City by the Bay- Vesuvio. This beautiful joint was, and still is, a gathering place for artists, musicians, poets, tourists and people that appreciate a good cocktail. I'll give you a bit of the back story of this watering hole to many legends of the Beat Generation.

Vesuvio, I'd just found out, opens at 6am! And closes at 2am, so they are closed for only 4 hours!
Anyway, Vesuvio and City Lights Bookstore are both Beatnick
landmarks in North Beach (Little Italy) in San Francisco.

San Francisco has been home to some of the greatest saloons in the world. Arguably, the most beautiful is Vesuvio Cafe on Columbus Avenue in North Beach, which was the epicenter of the art-poetry-literature-poetry driven Beat movement of the late 50's and early 60's. Thanks to Janet Clyde for sharing some of the history of this amazing drinking establishment.

Drink Destinations: San Francisco
Drink Destinations explores the cocktail scene of different cities around the world, highlighting the history, drinks, bars, and amazing bartenders.
This series was over 12 months in the making. During my travels highlighting/filming brewers, winemakers, and distillers, I was getting introduced to bartenders and bars to visit. Each person had an amazing story and to listen to their passionate words about the city they were in and the drinks that they made was inspiring to me. How to create an entertaining segment that people would enjoy? I became a student of cocktails, binge watching every drink series on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and various streaming services I could find. The result I came up with is connecting everyone to a sense of place, a starter guide for the viewer of the best bars/bartenders in cities around the world.

If you've been to the Mission district in San Francisco, then you've definitely seen or heard of The Sycamore. Most people in the area will tell you it's a great spot to swing in for a drink or some delicious food, regardless of the occasion. Often times, with San Francisco's limited real estate, it's difficult to find a local bar that has a decent outside patio. Rest assured you won't have to go far Mission-eers, The Sycamore has a cozy outdoor patio in the back with a myriad of beers on tap and some of the best bar food you'll find in the area. Columbus Cafe is another staple of the North Beach district in San Francisco. A classic dive experience, seasoned with one of the city's best happy hours; 2-for-1 drinks every afternoon, pool tables, and even a Nintendo Wii setup so you can get your game on and challenge your friends. The jukebox will keep you jamming while you snap group pics stuffed into their photo booth (because who ever does those things solo?). This is a great spot to bar hop with friends as it's near many other bars- the less actual walking the better, right? We had one of their fresh squeezed Greyhounds (a favorite) and watched a bit of the game. We also noticed that if it gets crowded, there's a downstairs to accommodate additional patrons or local celebrities trying to stay off the radar.

SAN FRANCISCO DIVE BAR THE EXPANSION
Spring 2016 marks 10 years since the beloved Expansion Bar was sold and an era ended. This short video is just a snapshot of the bar and its cast of characters. It is the opening of a 89 min film that was first screened in 2010. It is called Diary of a Merchant Seaman and is about a very good customer John Anderson, who was a retired Seaman. From Dublin to New York, L.A. and San Francisco I have never met anyone as colorful and animated as this wonderful character.
