The Outer Banks are barrier islands off the coast of the U.S. state of North Carolina, separating the Atlantic Ocean from the mainland. Their open-sea beaches, state parks and shipwreck diving sites make them a popular holiday destination. Roanoke Island was the site of England’s first settlement in the New World, an endeavor sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh.

Beaufort North Carolina Wild Horses on Rachel Carson Reserve & Estuarine Sanctuary
Rachel Carson North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve
A herd of about 40 banker horses lives on the Rachel Carson component of the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve, a series of five small islands and several salt marshes. There were no horses at the Sanctuary until the 1940s. It is unclear whether the Bankers swam over from nearby Shackleford or if they were left by residents who had used the islands to graze livestock. They are owned and managed by the State of North Carolina and regarded as a cultural resource.
No management action was taken until the late 1980s and early 1990s, when after years of flourishing population, the island's carrying capacity was exceeded. Malnourishment caused by overcrowding resulted in the deaths of several horses; the reserve's staff instituted a birth control program to regulate the herd.

The Corolla Shipwreck - Oldest in North Carlolina?
This shipwreck is thought to be THE oldest one in North Carolina. That would be older than Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge. This wreck was uncovered from the ocean floor during the winter and recently a group has removed it from the beach to preserve it. Currently it sits at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, but will be moved to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras. It is believed to be from the mid-1600's.

Roanoke River Lighthouse | NC Weekend | UNC TV
Edenton, North Carolina's Roanoke River Lighthouse celebrates annual Lighthouse Day on August 7th by opening its doors to the public. The restored lighthouse's history dates back to 1886, when it stood at the mouth of the Roanoke River. Edenton is the Lighthouse's third home, and a careful, hydraulic-assisted move in the Edenton water allows visitors to see how the Lighthouse would have looked like offshore. Visitors can witness the historic reopening on August 7th, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Reynolda House Museum of American Art
Reynolda House Museum of American Art displays a premiere collection of American art ranging from the colonial period to the present. Built in 1917 by Katharine Smith Reynolds and her husband R. J. Reynolds, founder of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, the house originally occupied the center of a 1,067-acre (4.32 km2) estate. It opened to the public as an institution dedicated to the arts and education in 1965, and as an art museum in 1967. The house holds one of the country's finest collections of American paintings. It is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Hilton Garden Inn Hotel Tour OBX Outer Banks NC Kitty Hawk
The Outer Banks (also known as OBX) is a 200-mile (320-km) long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, beginning in the southeastern corner of Virginia Beach on the east coast of the United States. They cover approximately half the northern North Carolina coastline, separating the Currituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean.
The Outer Banks is a major tourist destination and is known for its temperate climate and wide expanse of open beachfront. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore has four campgrounds where visitors may camp.
The Wright brothers' first flight in a powered, heavier-than-air vehicle took place on the Outer Banks on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near the seafront town of Kitty Hawk. The Wright Brothers National Monument commemorates the historic flights, and First Flight Airport is a small, general-aviation airfield located there.
The English Roanoke Colony—where the first person of English descent, Virginia Dare, was born on American soil—vanished from Roanoke Island in 1587. The Lost Colony, written and performed to commemorate the original colonists, is the longest running outdoor drama in the United States and its theater acts as a cultural focal point for much of the Outer Banks.
The treacherous seas off the Outer Banks and the large number of shipwrecks that have occurred there have given these seas the nickname Graveyard of the Atlantic. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is located in Hatteras Village near the United States Coast Guard facility and Hatteras ferry.
