Curio Bay is a coastal embayment in the Southland District of New Zealand, best known as the site of a petrified forest some 180 million years old. It also hosts a yellow-eyed penguin colony, arguably the rarest of penguin species, with approximately 1600 breeding pairs in the extant population. The bay, along with neighbouring Porpoise Bay, is home to the endemic Hector's dolphin. Southern right whales are occasionally observed offshore, as on numerous parts of the country's coast. Located near the southernmost point of the South Island, Curio Bay is one of the major attractions in the Catlins, attracting around 100,000 visitors per year. The town of ...

1. Catlins Surf School Curio Bay
The Catlins comprises an area in the southeastern corner of the South Island of New Zealand. The area lies between Balclutha and Invercargill, straddling the boundary between the Otago and Southland regions. It includes the South Island's southernmost point, Slope Point. A rugged, sparsely populated area, the Catlins features a scenic coastal landscape and dense temperate rainforest, both of which harbour many endangered species of birds, most notably the rare yellow-eyed penguin. The coast attracts numerous marine mammals, among them New Zealand fur seals and Hooker's sea lions. In general terms the area enjoys a maritime temperate climate. Its exposed location leads to its frequently wild weather and heavy ocean swells, which are an attraction to big-wave surfers, and have also caused nu...

2. Shark Diving Bluff
A shark attack is an attack on a human by a shark. Every year, around 80 unprovoked attacks are reported worldwide. Despite their relative rarity, many people fear shark attacks after occasional serial attacks, such as the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916, and horror fiction and films such as the Jaws series. Out of more than 489 shark species, only three are responsible for a double-digit number of fatal, unprovoked attacks on humans: the great white, tiger, and bull. The oceanic whitetip has probably killed many more castaways, but these are not recorded in the statistics.

Exploring The Catlins: Curio Bay & Niagara Falls – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year

Day 167: Today is the second day of exploring The Catlins Coast in New Zealand! We are checking out a fossilised forest and penguin hangout at Curio Bay & Porpoise Bay, as well as seeing the New Zealand version of Niagara Falls!

After an awesome day on our Catlins Road Trip yesterday, we are hitting the road once again to explore more of the Catlins Coast! This time, we are heading to Curio Bay!

Curio Bay in the Catlins is not only a location of an ancient fossilised forest (or petrified forest), it is also a place to spot yellow-eyed penguins for free. However, we are not here are the right time of day to see penguins. We are here at low tide to fully explore the petrified forest at Curio Bay.

After Curio Bay, we head next door to Porpoise Bay to have ice cream and go to a viewpoint over the Catlins Coast.

Finally, Niagara Falls New Zealand is on our itinerary. It is said to be the smallest waterfall in New Zealand. We can’t believe this is the first waterfall in the Catlins we are going to see when the Catlins is famous for its Catlins waterfalls.

Today we are joining EcoSEAker for swimming with dolphins in New Zealand. Not only that but we are swimming with Hector’s dolphins, the world’s smallest species.

We head to Daly’s Wharf for our dolphin swimming tour in Akaroa. Within about 20 minutes we see our first pod of dolphins for dolphin swimming where we spend at least 45 minutes in the water with them. For the rest of the tour we see other wildlife in Akaroa such as seals, shags, penguins and albatross.
