Manapōuri Power Station is an underground hydroelectric power station on the western arm of Lake Manapouri in Fiordland National Park, in the South Island of New Zealand. At 850 MW installed capacity , it is the largest hydroelectric power station in New Zealand, and the second largest power station in New Zealand. The Hump Ridge Track is located in the south east of Fiordland National Park, in the South Island of New Zealand. The track is about 61 km in distance and is based in Waitutu Forest . About 1800 walkers complete the track each year. The closest town is Tuatapere, although people often stay in Te Anau and opt to drive south the morning of beginning the track. The track was established in November 2001, with the initial cost for the project at $3,950,000 NZD. The track crosses Māori land and much privately owned land. The Tuatapere Hump Track Trust owns two lodges and over 20 km of board walk, although the Department of Conservation maintains the track along the coast and the Port Craig School Hut.

9. Homer Tunnel Milford Sound
The Homer Tunnel is a 1.2 km long road tunnel in the Fiordland region of the South Island of New Zealand, opened in 1953. New Zealand State Highway 94 passes through the tunnel, linking Milford Sound to Te Anau and Queenstown, by piercing the Darran Mountain range at the Homer Saddle. It connects between the valley of the Hollyford River to the east and that of the Cleddau to the west. The tunnel is straight and was originally single-lane and gravel-surfaced. The tunnel walls remain unlined granite. The east portal end is at 945 m elevation; the tunnel runs 1270 m at approximately a 1:10 gradient down to the western portal. Until it was sealed and enlarged it was the longest gravel-surfaced tunnel in the world.

Doubtful Sound is the second most famous tourist destination in New Zealand. It is a beautiful fjord in Fiordland National Park, in the south-west of the country. Doubtful Sound is the deepest and second longest (40 km/25 mi) of the South Island's fjords. Some people prefer Doubtful Sound to the more famous Milford Sound because of its remotnes and solitude.

To reach and cruise the Doubtful Sound you first cruise by boat lake Manapouri, get on a bus to drive you over Wilmot Pass, and then board the main cruise boat (1:14).

Day 143: Today we are getting off the beaten track and taking a cruise of Doubtful Sound with Real Journeys! It’s a full day trip over the stunning Lake Manapouri and through the Fiordland National Park wilderness to get to the quieter big brother of Milford Sound.

Today we are going from Te Anau to Lake Manapouri which is the start of our Doubtful Sound Tour! We are going to be cruising on the less popular fiord of the Fiordland National Park. However, it’s 3X larger than Milford Sound meaning that just the Doubtful Sound cruise is 3 hours. On top of that, it’s a whole adventure to get to Doubtful Sound, starting at the shores of Lake Manapouri.

We join the team from Real Journeys for a cruise across Lake Manapouri, a stunning lake and entrance to the Fiordland National Park. The trip is a couple of hours where already we see towering mountains and that famous Fiordland National Park scenery.

Once we are across the waters of Lake Manapouri, we hop onto a bus to take us over Wilmot Pass, New Zealand’s most expensive road to build and the only road completely disconnected by the New Zealand road network. We stop along the way for epic viewpoints of Doubtful Sound and to see some wildlife, the native kea parrot!

We arrive down at Deep Cove where our 3 hour cruise on Doubtful Sound begins. Doubtful Sound makes an awesome alternative to Milford Sound with a lot less boat traffic and chance for the captain to switch the engines off and allow us to hear the wilderness around us. Milford Sound may be called the 8th wonder of the world, but Doubtful Sound has that same impressive mountains carved by glaciers, waterfalls, dark reflective waters, and not to mention the wildlife as we see dolphins, penguins and seals on this trip. If you were only to do one New Zealand cruise, consider this one!

Today we are doing packrafting in Fiordland National Park! What is packrafting? Well, it’s exploring the wilderness with everything you need on your back including a raft or kayak. We are using blow-up kayaks to explore the Waiau River in Te Anau and Lake Manapouri before packing the rafts up in a backpack then hiking on the Kepler Track.

Packrafting is one of the awesome adventure activities in Te Anau, where we start our trip. We learn how to blow up our packrafts then hit the grade 2 Waiau River. Packrafting on the Waiau River is great for beginners to packrafting.

Once floated down the Waiau River we emerge on Lake Manapouri. At one side of the lake, we reach the shores and pack our rafts away. With our rafts on our backs, we hit the Kepler Track which is one of the Great Walks of New Zealand. Hiking the Kepler Track is part of the packrafting experience.

Te Anau and Milford Sound | Day Trip | New Zealand (HD)

Te Anau is a town on the South Island of New Zealand (172 KM from Queenstown). It’s known as a gateway to Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound. Te Anau Caves feature a limestone grotto of Glowworms and an underground waterfall (Real Journeys run 1 hour tour to Glow-warm cave).

Milford Sound is an inlet (sound) in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island (285 KM from Queenstown and 118 KM from Te Anau). The drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound is very beautiful. Eglington Valley, Mirror Lake, The Divide, Monkey Creek, Homer Tunnel are few of the attractions on the way to Milford Sound. Beautiful mountain ranges with glacier at the peak are both side of the road.

The beauty of Milford Sound doesn’t have any word. This is my little afford to showcase the trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound via Te Anau.
