Well - this video WAS the first uploaded (of the five it was a part of) - but for some weird reason youtube never finished processing this video therefore requiring it's total deletion ..
Thus: Here we go again.?
4WDing Old Man Range to Waikaia Bush Road - near Roxburgh (NZ).
Took the Delica for a wee run today (just up the road & back).
Well .. UP the road was the easy bit (whereas the back bit - took all day).
Went up from Roxburgh (elevation 500 Metres above sea level)
To Symes Road (Fruitlands = an elevation of approx 650 Metres).
Then UP (Literally) to a slightly higher elevation of just 1,696M (above sea level).
Right to the top of the Old Man Range at the Obelisk Rock -45.32181 169.20658
We parked near the Television Translator (to enjoy the view, take more videos & eat lunch).
There is NO HIGHER HILL between the Old Man Range and Antartica.
Now - going UP Symes Road wasn't too difficult;
But after reading the DOC Information KIOSK at the top of the Symes Road access way ..
We saw that there was a DOTTED 4WD access road going all the way from the Obelisk to Waikaia Bush Road..
With a distance indicated of 12 km total -45.34168 169.21012
Thus we followed in the footsteps of the Old Time Gold Miners
Whom used the top of the Old Man Range as a main highway to easily get their horse drawn wagons from the Teviot Valley, across to & back from the Upper Bannockburn & the Nevis goldfields.
The Old man Range has an extremely flat topography (along the upper reaches) and thus offered the Goldminers an easy to use -wagon access route.
However = It's an awful long way to walk to get help, if you get your vehicle stuck .. therefore take special notice of the DOC KIOSK information .. which gives a highly detailed KEY to their top of hill map ..
ie:
KEEP TO (the) 4WD FORMED ROUTES.
DO NOT DEVIATE TO AVOID THE RISK GETTING STUCK
We saw that there is a WELL DEFINED 4WD access road (indicated by a dotted red line) all the way from the top of Old Man Range kiosk - which intersects with & thus joins into:
The Waikaia Bush Road. -45.44598 169.21360
Hence the realisation that there WAS a fully formed track that exited onto the Public Road known as the Waikaia Bush Road (signalled by the red dotted line) on their PUBLIC map (inside the DOC kiosk).
However somewhere along the way ..
?
Someone in DOC.. has since altered the definition of where that access 4WD route goes..
WITHOUT ALTERING THE NOTIFICATION ATOP THE HILL.
We only saw the notice at the top of hill.
Hence we did NOT know (UNTIL LOOKING AT THEIR WEBSITE TONIGHT) that they have since -- stopped maIntaining the NON_MAINTAINED ? (get it) 4WD route.!
Thus: The WELL FORMED non_maintained route ?? Is now not maintained (at all).
However:
The original 4WD route still shows itself as a well defined route.
Especially as the DOC information board & MAP still shows a 4WD route along the top - from the Obelisk Rock to Waikaia Bush Road
Do NOT be deceived (as we were) that it would be efficiently MARKED as NOT NOW BEING AVAILABLE.
There is no such signage.
However someone has also since.. altered the original 4WD easily well defined track - about 3 - 4km PAST the Hyde Rock ..such that the OLD route still looks for all intents & purposes to be accessible without the need to take a hard right turn deviation towards the Waikaia Valley via a rather muddied alternative that doesn't even look like going towards Shingle Creek.!!
However -- after about another 1 km - the OLD ROUTE slowly petered out to virtually nothing (except MUD & DEEP RUTS that threatened to sink us forever).
Thankfully when the van tilted over into a sort of final resting place .. I stubbornly refused to let it sink & hence we eventually followed the old track directly onto the Upper reaches of The Waikaia Bush Road & thence -downhill to Ash McGregors Woolshed.
AND THEN HOME.
We left from oposite the Roxburgh Fire Station, and a little over 2 minutes later (heading North) we drove past Roxburgh's new subdivision Qual Haven.
Some 4 hours and 5 videos later, we again drove past Qual Haven (glad to be heading South, towards home).
Where IS Dad?
I did take my fishing rod for one last 30-minute fly dip on the Mataura River between Te Anau & Queenstown. I had to walk 45 mins (22.5 each direction) to find fish. Got a rise (for you non-fishermen, clear your DIRTY minds) but only got about 15 casts and 5 fly changes in before having to leave to take care of my child. (PS: the approaching vehicle was occupied by a man from Colorado who was celebrating his 75th birthday with a day on the stream alone. I hope I am as happy and healthy as he is in 24 years!)

I was about to cut some firewood ..
When my (new) De-Facto wife - jokingly said:
Um - I'd much rather go - for a short drive

Hehehehe - !!!
Well she doesn't know me well enough yet - eh.?
As I don't NEED no second telling
..
If it's work .. that I can get out of...!!!

So..
Without telling her.. I changed my clothes..
Put on my travelling rags, grabbed the Delica Keys
And said.
Well -- why aren't YOU ready yet.?
..
Hence we went UP the lookout hill
(behind our house here in Roxburgh).

Just so that I could show her ?
Someday -- we'll go over the river - my dear..
And UP to?
Lake Onslow.
Then I drove down the hill .. through town...?
And promptly drove her - HOME..
