James Creedon: A Love That Never Was

The summer of 2017 offered us a new soundtrack for this film. A small piece of Ireland entered The Cathedral That Never Was and the result was astounding. Read how James Creedon explains below with his own words how it all happened.

The soundtrack recording for this film happened in a rather bizarre and unexpected fashion during a visit to my friend Martine's family in Aldeanueva de Ebro, Rioja, Spain in July 2017. At a family get-together, I sang She Moved Through the Fair which is a beautiful and evocative Irish lament speaking of a love that never was or never could be. For those unfamiliar with it, many Irish singers have interpreted it including Sinéad O'Connor (in the film Michael Collins) and Van Morrison. For me, it is very bound up with the story of Michael Collins and his fiancée Kitty Kiernan - his death during the Irish Civil War and the fact that their marriage could thus never be is connected with my feeling for the piece. Nobilis Bellator (Martine's father) was struck by the song. The next morning, I visited the church in Aldeanueva on my own. I noticed the acoustics were incredible and spontaneously sang the song in the vast, empty expanse of this beautiful building. Martine arrived and we recorded the song on her phone. When later Nobilis heard it he was immediately struck by an idea. He had already produced a beautiful Timelapse based film of the church which had been built to be a cathedral yet, because of shifting diocesan boundaries in La Rioja during its construction, never in fact became a cathedral. The film was in need of an appropriate musical accompaniment and it turns out the duration of the recording of She Moved Through the Fair pretty much matched the length of the video. We returned to the church with proper sound recording equipment on Sunday 30th July. To stand at the altar of this exquisite building and sing this song was a unique and powerful experience. The same day, I embarked on a 10-day condensed leg of the Santiago de Compostela Camino. On my return to Paris where I live, Nobilis sent me the edited version of the film along with the song...a lament about a love that never was, sung in a cathedral that never was. Make of it what you will but this happened in a very unplanned fashion and I love the poetry of the song, the space and how the two met for one brief moment on a Sunday in July.
