We are guys from the Netherlands who did a roadtrip from New York to Key West - via Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans and more.
After a few days in New York, we picked up a rental car, bought a tent and camping gear at the Walmart, and continued inland. Without much planning, we travelled from camping to camping. During our trip we did a lot of sight seeing, went fishing and visit a lot of bars and cool places.
In total, we have covered a distance of approx. 7500km in one month.

You will love the bike trails, the beautiful sand and the wide beaches. It is one of the most charming cities in the U.S.

What we did in Gainesville Florida, with kids, for a whole day.
We went on a mini road trip with our kids, from Orlando to Gainesville. There are quite a few things to see in and around Gainesville, but we’ve settled on four places to visit:
1) Devil’s Millhopper State Park
2) Florida Natural Museum
3) Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park and
4) The Ecopassage Observation Boardwalk (part of the state park but no fee is required)
We’ve managed to visit all the places we have planned to see, and we truly enjoyed the Florida specific landscapes, sights and sounds. All in all, the trip was excellent and I would probably repeat it in a year, maybe. Gainesville is a lovely city and offers a lot of areas for outdoor activities, but I would not go out of my way, from Orlando, to visit too often.
Here are some tips & useful info:
Devil’s Millhoper State Park
The main attraction, the mini rainforest experience (the boardwalk that leads into the sinkhole) is currently closed. If you can, plan your visit after October 2018, when the park management plans to reopen the boardwalk.
Florida Natural Museum
The entrance fee to the museum is free. They do charge for the Butterfly Rainforest & the Bat exhibits - if you are a Florida resident you get a discount for both.
Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park
This was well worth the visit and one could spend a whole day in the park. We did only a few things because it was close to the end of our day in Gainesville, but it’s a fantastic place to visit with kids. The entrance fee was $6 per vehicle.
The Ecopassage Observation Boardwalk
We’ve missed this on our way to Gainesville coming from Orlando, but after our stop at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, we saw it on the map, asked around and then we drove back towards Gainesville. You will not find this (yet) on google maps - here’s how to get to this point:
From Orlando (or from Paynes State Park), take the US-441 North, towards Gainesville. There is a sign for Paynes Prairie Bolen Bluff - reduce your speed, and you will see another sign for the Ecopassage Boardwalk. Parking space is limited, but we found no issue finding parking as not too many people stop by.

Visiting Gatorland, Wildlife park in Florida, United States
Gatorland is a 110-acre (45 ha) theme park and wildlife preserve located along South Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando, Florida. It was founded by Owen Godwin in 1949 and has been privately owned by his family since then. Billed as the Alligator Capital of the World, Gatorland features thousands of alligators and crocodiles, a breeding marsh with boardwalk and observation tower, reptile shows, aviary, petting zoo, swamp walk and educational programs. The park is known for buying and rescuing nuisance alligators from trappers that would otherwise be killed for their meat and skin. The Breeding Marsh area of the park was used in the filming of the 1984 movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. For more info, visit this:

Exploring St Augustine Found Top Secret Trails (Stuck Twice)
In this video we explored St. Augustine Florida, the oldest city in the United States as well as the oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S. Castillo de San Marcos, It was so cool to see this old fort with cannon ball holes on the exterior. We launched the jet skis in Jacksonville and road the ICW intercostal water ways over to St. Augustine carving trough some top secret trails along the way, Junior from Juns World took a wrong turn and ended up stuck in the grass flats we eventually rescued him and continued our way to only to have Danny Duncan get stuck on a sandbar! This is a great area to explore with tons of secret hidden treasures.

The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, Boynton Beach, Florida, USA
The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge includes the most northern remnant of the historic Everglades wetland ecosystem. The site is approximately 147,392 acre (596 km²).
Located in Palm Beach County, Florida, west of Boynton Beach, it is one of over 500 national wildlife refuges located throughout the United States and administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
The refuge not only preserves and protects native wildlife, but also offers compatible public recreational and educational opportunities including walking trails, a canoe trail, bike trail, boat ramps, fishing platform, observation towers, butterfly garden, and a visitor center. It is home to American Alligator, the endangered Snail Kite, and as many as 257 species of birds. As such, it has been designated a 'gateway site' for the Great Florida Birding Trail.
Not quite all of the refuge is Everglades marsh habitat. A four hundred acre Bald Cypress swamp is the largest remaining remnant of a cypress strand that once separated the pine flatwoods in the east from the Everglades marshes.
A boardwalk into the swamp gives you a chance for an up-close swamp experience without getting your feet wet. Hurricane Wilma damaged the refuge in October 2005, and the administration building was condemned.
Despite all of its treasures, the refuge is in serious danger of quickly becoming an exclusive haven for invasive plants, especially the Broad-leaved paper bark (Melaleuca quinquenervia) and Old World climbing fern (Lygodium microphyllum), both rapidly growing non-native species, which are quickly overgrowing the native flora and are likely not compatible with the native wildlife.
