Now and then for visa purposes, we go to Nicaragua.
Last time there we took the opportunity to visit Ometepe island, in the huge lake called Lake Nicaragua.
Seeing the little island with its two big volcanoes in the vast lake brought our minds to a Hindu prayer where Mother Earth is spoken of as dressed in oceans and decorated with mountains.
We met many gentle and sweet islanders, and we wished they would all just move to Madhuvan with us.
We rented a scooter from the Hotel we stayed at to explore the island and were charmed by the free-roaming cows along the roadside. Our goal was the raw chocolate factory El Pital. There we learned about their unique 21-day production process, from tree to bar, and we tried one of their amazing chocolate milkshakes.
If you go to visit Nicaragua, this is one of the more tourist-friendly places, while still genuine, and so highly recommended.
Traveling with a baby - Nicaragua Part I
When Leonie and I were travelling in Thailand in 2012, I saw a hippie woman on Khao San Road with a baby in het baby carrier on her back. She got my attention as she was drinking a beer. She seemed to be completely relaxed and her baby was too. Enjoying the music, making contact with people and laughing. I said to Leonie, If we ever get a baby, I want to experience the same. Five years later I am experiencing the same thing as the lady and made this dream come true by going with my daughter to Nicaragua. My message for you: chase your dreams.. make them come true!
The two videos that I made, are mostly because this is trip was a dream come true and I wanted to record it to eventually show Feyla what we did. Further more, I want to encourage all parents who want to travel with a baby just to do it!! You will get to know your baby so good!
In our three weeks travel to Nicaragua we visited Granada, Laguna de Apoyo (day trip), San Juan Del Sur, Isla de Ometepe and Leon. I put all the links to each most of the hostels and all. Enjoy!!!!
Feyla slept in a Deryan baby tent which is a tent that you can set up in 30 seconds. Very small, light weighted and easy to carry:
GRANADA
House: Amazing location, great hosts, breakfast, a pool, and perfect location. Highly recommended! Just around the corner you can eat the best frito (bananas, meat and salad for 100 cordobas).
Boat trip: Mustafa on calle de Calzada 15$. Not very special but a chill trip and nice to see some birds and monkeys.
Laguna de Apoyo: Mustafa 24$ for a taxi and 12$ entrance (6$ pp). We stayed at Laguna beach resort.
Shuttle to San Juan Del Sur: Mustafa
We were a little bit scared to take a chicken bus, so we took a shuttle. It was 30$ in total.
SAN JUAN DEL SUR
Hotel: Hotel Colonial An ok hotel, though overpriced (45$ per night), including breakfast.
Walk to jesus statue: Hike of 45 minutes, bring a small bottle of water and a few dollars.
Playa Maderas: 5$ pp via Hostel Oro
Shuttle to the port of San Jorge: 10$pp
ISLA DE OMETEPE:
Boat: 3$ pp
Take a chicken bus to Altagracia.
Hotel: Nice hotel, large room (two doubles for 55$). Be aware, you might find a scorpion in your bathroom like we did. We stayed here for 2 nights. Dinner was 9$ for a plate of rice, vegetables and chicken or pork. Way too over priced! Scooters: 20$ per day
Trip: Chaco Verde. Chicken bus 40cts and entrance fee approx 5$ pp
Ojo de Agua: We took a taxi. Entrance fee was 3$ pp
We recommend to rent a scooter/quad to tour around the island.
Beaches: Santa Domingo & Santa Cruz
We also stayed in Moyogalpa.
Hostel: Soma. Great hostel, nice vibe. Canadian host who was very welcoming. Shared bathroom which was fine. Even with a baby. Rooms are clean and nice breakfast (included). 10 minutes walk from the harbor.
LEON
To get to Leon, we took the boat back from Ometepe to Granada (from Rivas). Make sure the taxi driver does not drop you at the gas station where another bunch of taxi try to offer themselves. A chicken bus is way cheaper and nearly as fast as the taxi. We stayed one day at Casa sunrisas again to chill for one day and take a UCA bus to managua. Transfer to Leon. From Granada to Leon cost us 1.50$ pp.
Hotel: Casa Abierta Very nice hotel. The swimming pool was very welcoming as it was 39 degrees. Clean room, lovely bathroom with nice shower.
Airbnb:
Very nice and cheap airbnb. Flor was a nice host and was able to inform us about nice places to go to.
Trip: Volcano boarding: facebook.com/volcanoday very nice guides and nice hike! Bring water, good shoes and breathe!
We took a chicken bus back to Managua. Again approx. 100 cordobas pp.
Hotel: Art Hotel. An okay room incl AC. Nice pool.
We only stayed there for one night to take our early flight back home.

Isla de Ometepe - the fantasy island in Nicaragua
Isla de Ometepe is definitely a good candidate for eight wonder of the world. It is an absolutely fantastic island and one of my favourite places in Central and South America.
Ometepe is an island formed by two volcanos rising from lake Nicaragua in the Republic of Nicaragua. Its name derives from the Nahuatl words ome (two) and tepetl (mountain), meaning two mountains: two volcanic peaks (Conception and Maderas) rise from the hazy blue expanse of Cocibolca, 'the Sweet Sea' and form an hourglass of beaches and jungles.
Isla de Ometepe has an area of 276 km². It is 31 km long and 5 to 10 km wide. The island has a population of 42,000, and an economy based on tourism, livestock and agriculture.
It has a hiding a wealth of archaeological treasures and a very romantic countryside. Thomas and I spent some of the most romantic time of our travels there.
Animal Love Rescue Center
Lands in love is an environmental and animal friendly zone in Costa Rica, located in a hidden valley in the middle of a cloud forest, beautiful as a legend.
We are 15 friends of many years, all of us originally from Israel, vegan and animal lovers. A few months after visiting Costa Rica, we packed all our lives (including our 30 dogs and 50 cats) and moved to Costa Rica.
Six months of working days and nights brought this place to the point of modern operational ecological vegetarian vegan resort. Today we have more than 520 dogs and cats, in addition to them, hen, ducks, geese, goats & sheep.
Most of them were abandoned, injured, handicapped and abused. We built them a home, spacious and airy, take care of their comfort and welfare. 40 of them are staying with us in our office, lacking rooms in the doghouse.
All our animals receive high quality medical treatment as a routine, vaccinations, rehabilitating treatment, quality food, special diet love and care. Every month we receive 10 to 15 new comers.
The maintenance of the whole setting, costs us more than $15,000 a month.
Our wishes are to build facilities for all the present and future animals that keep being abandoned here. To have a fully equipped veterinarian clinic in our premises. To be able to save and help more animals. 5 years ago, we started building our veterinarian clinic next to the dog house, but unfortunately, we ran out of money.
We cannot do all this alone, we need your help.
