Moyogalpa is a municipality in the Rivas department of Nicaragua. Moyogalpa is the largest village and the home of the largest of the three ferry ports on Ometepe Island. There are multiple hotels, hostels, and restaurants on the island, along with small shops called Pulperias selling a variety of items from snacks to basic clothing. In 2016, Walmart opened a Pali Supermarket in Moyogalpa to serve the 40,000+ island population, including many expats and the thousands of visiting tourists. Since opening Pali, many of the small pulperias have improved their own meat, produce and items for sale displays, adding many items not offered by Pali.

1. Isla Ometepe Moyogalpa
Ometepe is an island formed by two volcanoes rising out of Lake Nicaragua in the Republic of Nicaragua. Its name derives from the Nahuatl words ome and tepetl , meaning two mountains. It is the largest island in Lake Nicaragua. The two volcanoes are joined by a low isthmus to form one island in the shape of an hourglass, dumbbell or peanut. Ometepe has an area of 276 km2. It is 31 km long and 5 to 10 km wide. The island has an economy based on livestock, agriculture, and tourism. Plantains are the major crop.

2. Museum El Ceibo Moyogalpa
El Ceibo is a major Museum in the Ometepe island in what once were the tobacco farm “Tel Aviv” kilns, known by its former name “El Refugio”, in the community of Sacramento, 10 kilometers from Moyogalpa in Lake Cocibolca or Lake Nicaragua administratively Ometepe Island belongs to the Rivas Department. The name of the island derives from the Nahuatl: ōme 'two' and tepētl 'mountain ,' since it is almost entirely composed of two volcanic cones: Concepción and Maderas volcano. Access to the Museum is free to island residents and has an entrance fee of $10 USD for foreign tourists to visit both museums and $6 USD for domestic visitors. A Day on Ometepe Island in Nicaragua! Tried to leave with the ferry of Ometepe but it was full.

Backpacking Nicaragua (2019) Ometepe by motorbike | Ojo de Agua baths | Things to see Ometepe (Spanish Subtitles) En Espanol

In this episode we continue our backpacking tour of Nicaragua. We hire a motorbike for the day and explore the beautiful Nicaraguan Island of Ometepe.

We visit the Nature reserve of Ojo de Agua, which are beautiful natural springs that you can swim in and cool off - very welcomed in this heat.

We then head to Playa Santo Domingo one of the main beach areas on Ometepe. After a nice lunch we enjoyed more beautiful views of the island.

In our latest episode of our backpacking Central America series we give you a tour of our wonderful eco cabin that we booked via air BnB next to lake Nicaragua.

The room is on air BnB called Eco Cabin by the lake - or if you are looking for it once you arrive it's also known as el Samaritano
It is located approx 7km south of Moyogalpa.

We had a fabulous time here and wouldn't hesitate staying there again.
