Dauin | Dumaguete | Negros Oriental | Philippines | Female Solo Traveler
Just a 20 minute ride from Dumaguete lays Dauin. It’s famous for scuba diving and trips to Apo Island. There are a lot of resorts along the beach offering the trips.
If you don’t want to go diving or snorkeling, you can get around and visit some highlights in the area.

--DAUIN THINGS TO DO--
I visited:
►Casaroro falls
►Twin Lakes
►Smokey mountain (just along the road)
I got on the back of a motor cycle which costed me 2000 pesos for the whole day, private tour. Not sure if lunch was supposed to be included. My guide paid for me but I paid it back later
The resort I stayed in doesn’t normally offer trips like this. It was specially arranged for me.
Along the way you pay little entrance fees at both locations, and you need to register.
►Casaroro falls
It’s a lot of steps to go down! And then there used to be a path, but it was washed away with a flood / tyfoon. Get ready to get over some wet stones - wear good shoes - and prepare for wet feet. Journey is rewarding though. Falls are high, and not crowded.
►Twin Lakes
Very silent place. Looks like Austria to be honest!
Get a boat over the lake - 150 pesos per hour for the kayak, going around yourself. Or 250 per hour to get a bigger boat with boatman.
To see twin lakes viewpoint and visit the small falls you’ll need at least 1/5 to 2 hours.
There is a small restaurant with view over the lake for lunch. But there are lots of picknick spots as well.
I suspect this place is busy in the weekend and holidays, when people will have a picknick here.
NOTE: you are not allowed to fly a drone over the lakes. It’s a protected area.
--SLEEP IN DAUIN--
►Mikes Dauin Resort -
Recommended in the area. Friendly staff, good beds, little pool and lots of divers! Good food also. This is the place I stayed in and it did not disappoint.
Other options:
►Pura Vida -
Close to the place I stayed in and it looked good from the outside! Pictures online make me curious too
--EAT IN DAUIN--
Just walk along the beach, and stop where ever you want a bite. I liked the food at Mike’s and since I was traveling alone, I don’t feel the need to go out for food all the time ;)

It’s a relatively short hop from Siquijor to Dumaguete.
Drive 20 minutes south, and you’ll end up in Dauin.
A sleepy little town, with some very nice resorts along the beach.
With Apo Island just around the corner, scuba diving is by far the nr 1 attraction here.
But if you’re not a diver, it’s highly recommended to head this way…
Being so long and narrow, makes this waterfall unique. The water drops over 30 meter before it smashes into the natural pool underneath.
Thick clouds of sulfur just leak out of the mountain, climbing up to the sky. It’s a fascinating choreography, almost hypnotizing…
High up in the mountains, the twin lakes are hidden. It’s an important bird area with a high number of endangered species. But what you’ll mostly notice is how quiet and peaceful it is up here. A place to wind down, far from daily life..
They say still waters run deep, in this case even to 90 meters.
If you make it to the other side, you’ll be rewarded with yet an other little waterfall.
The last stop of the lake, will give you a great view over the two twins.

--TOUR TO APO ISLAND--
Was arranged through Coco Grove.
From my hotel (Garden Bungalows resort) they called to Coco Grove. Because the tour is busy, they want you to pass by the resort and confirm (pay) your booking the day before. Don’t forget to do so! Or they might give your spot to someone else…
Price when I visited: just under 1900 pesos per person, including lunch. Excluding transport to Coco Grove on Siquijor where the tour starts.
You need to be there 7.30 in the morning, or 7.00 if you want breakfast here first. Breakfast is quite nice here! And big, it will definitely get you full till lunch ;)
You can also reach Apo Island from Dumaguete or Dauin, which is actually a shorter boatride. What I liked about Coco Grove is that they have a resort on the island, where you have your lunch. It’s a secluded little beach, perfect to relax for an our or so!
--SLEEP IN SIQUIJOR OR APO ISLAND--
►Coco Grove -
There are quite a lot of resorts and hotels, small and big. Most suggested online is Coco Grove. I haven’t slept here, but my tour to Apo island was organized through this place. It looked great! Really good. You won’t be disappointed staying here I am sure. Though for my taste maybe a bit big, which is why I stayed in the place down below.
►Garden Bungalows Resort -
I loved this place! If you want something more personal, go for Garden Bungalows. A resort with 4 places only, and a pool in between. Of course situated in a lovely garden. The owner and members of the resort took me (and other guests) to some amazing places, I wouldn’t have found myself! You can arrange motorcycles and a tour over the island with them as well.
► Apo Island
There are a few homestays on the island, if you’re on a budget.
The resort linked to Coco Grove is this one:
And then there’s this one as well:
--EAT IN SIQUIJOR--
►Ustory
Quiet, at the beach, romantic. Very good choice. Eat here at least one night.
►Saki
Japanese restaurant up the hill. Hidden gem! They also have rooms for rent.
Eat here at least one night ;)

This teeny tiny little heaven over here is Apo Island. Easily reached from Dumaguete, but today we’ll go from Siquijor. Starting our journey early in the morning, at Coco Grove.
Apo island is a small community, with less than a thousand inhabitants. It’s best known for being a Marine Sanctuary, the second oldest in the entire country. Protecting the wonders under the surface since 1985, this place served as an example for hundreds of other sanctuaries throughout the Philippines.
There are too many good reefs here to see on just one day trip. Because the whole area is basically full of them!
And because swimming makes you hungry, we get head back to a little hidden lagoon. Just enjoy the crystal blue waters and fine sand, with a good plate of food!
Back on the shore, there is an other surprise for us. Cause the owner of our hotel takes us to this little hidden gem up the hill. Great to experience sunset over the island. And if you’re up for some funky drinks..!

Travel guide: Apo island and Siquijor, Philippines!
Finally got to explore the beautiful Siquijor and Apo island near Dumaguete, Philippines!
As you all know, i'm a total island girl. I'm at my happiest when I'm surrounded by bodies of water and I make sure that my skin; especially my face is well protected from harmful UV rays with Belo tinted sunscreen when I do island activities. To me, this is the best everyday, go-to make-up for a traveler girl like me especially that I no longer need to buy a foundation. I just apply my Belo SunExpert Tinted Sunscreen, put a bit of blush on for that beachy vibe and voila! Ready to rampa!
It comes in

10 THINGS TO DO ON SIQUIJOR ISLAND, PHILIPPINES:
1. STAY ON THE BEACH
Most visitors who come to Siquijor Island stay on the west coast around San Juan, there’s a few hostels and restaurants, and a nice beach call Paliton. Honestly, I didn’t spend much time over there.
Instead, I opted for a little beach cottage on the east side, north of Larena - Casa de La Playa.
2. RENT A SCOOTER
I was told before my trip to The Philippines that renting a scooter was the best way to get around on most islands, and this was my first time experiencing it.
The simple freedom and local access made this one of my favorite aspects of the entire three month trip.
3. VISIT LAZI CHURCH
Built with sea stones and wood by Filipino artisans in 1884, was declared a National Cultural Treasure and nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage list.
4. ROPE SWING AT CAMUGAHAY FALLS
A short drive from Lazi Church is one of the most visited attractions on the island, Camugahay Calls.
You can get a guide at the entrance, and it’s nice to help the local economy, but it’s really not necessary.
5. VISIT LAZI
Next up, it’s over to the sleepy town of Lazi for lunch.
6. EAT PANDESAL
Simple dinner-roll-style bread that is served up in most bakeries around Siquijor Island.
7. VISIT CENTURY OLD BALETE TREE
Experience the very weird feeling of having your feet nibbled on by small fish at the base of a beautiful old Balete Tree.
8. CLIFF JUMP SALAGDOONG BEACH
The most popular attraction on Siquijor Island is the two diving boards at Salagdoong Beach.
9. PORTSIDE CAFE IN LARENA
Have a massive cheeseburger at the Portside Cafe in Larena. This is a good spot to eat if you are waiting for the ferry
10. SUNSET AT MT. BANDILAAN TOWER
Traverse through the small villages and up above the tree line to Mt. Bandilaan for sunset. The tower is not an easy thing to find so be sure to ask a local on your way up.
