It is no secret that Croatia is one of our favourite countries to travel in Europe, and Split is a destination that can’t be missed.
Set in and around the walls of an ancient Roman palace looking out to the Adriatic Sea, Split is what travel dreams are made of: sunny, scenic, and filled with historic sights and culinary delights.
The streets are marble maze where pieces of history lay hidden around every corner, the harbour is lined with cafes and palm trees drawing out locals and visitors to promenade in the sunshine, and let’s not forget about the abundance of restaurants serving up fresh seafood and Croatian dishes with a contemporary twist!

Diocletian was a Roman Emperor who ruled from the years 284 to 305. He was born in Dalmatia, and when it came time to build his retirement residence, he chose this very spot which today forms the Old Town of Split.
It made sense to start our tour of Split here. First, the bell tower for a quick look at the city from above. Next to the bell tower, you have the Mausoleum of Diocletian. Emperor Diocletian was a persecutor of Christians, and ironically, his mausoleum is now a cathedral named after Saint Domnius, who was martyred by Diocletian.
We walked over to the Temple of Jupiter. Interesting fact: the sphinx you see at the entrance was one of the twelve sphinxes brought from Egypt by Emperor Diocletian.
The crypt sits directly underneath the cathedral and it’s dedicated to Saint Lucy, another victim of the religious persecutions under the rule of Diocletian.
We walked through the underground market which is open to the public free of charge. This market is also located at basement level and it is filled with vendors selling all types of artwork and souvenirs. We also walked up the Marjan Steps for scenic views of Split.
Marjan Hill is 178 meters high and it takes 314 steps to reach the highest point. It’s a very pleasant walk with lots of greenery, and along the way we even came across an old stone church.
Then on the way back down the hill, we went for a walk through Varoš.
And while we were in Split, we also made time to visit a statue with a rather famous toe. This is Grgur Ninski. He was a medieval Croatian bishop who introduced the national language in the religious services.
Now a travel tip: while you’re out strolling down the Rive Promenade, you can also access Matejuška Port, which is a small harbour for small boats used mainly by the local fishermen. This particular spot offers some really nice views looking back on Split.

Foggia is a city and comune of Apulia, in southern Italy, capital of the province of Foggia. In 2013 its population was 153,143. Foggia is the main city of a plain called Tavoliere, also known as the granary of Italy. The name Foggia might derive from Latin fovea, meaning pit, referring to the pits where wheat was stored. The name's etymology remains uncertain however, as it could as well stem from Phocaea, or most probably from the Medieval Greek word for fire, which is fotia, as according to legend the original -11th-c-AD- settlers were peasants, allegedly after having [miraculously] discovered there a panel portraying the Madonna, on which three flames burnt.
It is a communication and industrial center and the main wheat market of Southern Italy. Foggia is famous for its watermelons and tomatoes. Although less important than once before, the agricultural sector remains the mainstay of Foggia's economy. This area is nicknamed the granary of Italy. The few industries present are mostly devoted to food processing. Craftsmanship is also encouraged and developed.
Foggia railway station, opened in 1864, forms part of the Adriatic Railway (Ancona–Lecce), and is the terminus of the Naples–Foggia railway. It is also a junction for several other, secondary lines, namely the Foggia–Manfredonia, Lucera–Foggia and Foggia–Potenza railways, making Foggia the most important railway junction of southern Italy and the third one of whole Italy. Foggia is served by Gino Lisa Airport, which offers direct flights operated with helicopters to Tremiti Islands and Vieste.

The cathedral of Santa Maria de Fovea, which is directly linked with the patron saint Madonna dei Sette Veli (Madonna of the Seven Veils) This important site has two levels of architectural style. The lower part is Romanic as with many Pugliese churches. The upper part is a very remarkable example of Baroque. The upper part was reconstructed after an earthquake that destroyed a great part of the historical centre.
Palazzo Dogana, the historical seat of the sheep custom. On July 2013 this Palace was elected by UNESCO as Messenger Monument of the Culture of Peace for the important role it had in the cultural exchanges during centuries.

Il paradiso nascosto dei Bagni San Filippo, le terme naturali nel cuore della Val d’Orcia in Toscana
I Bagni San Filippo sono una medicina per il corpo e per l’anima, un luogo incantato nel cuore verde della Toscana. In Val d’Orcia, in provincia di Siena, c’è un rifugio naturale per chi fugge da stress e preoccupazioni. Le terme prendono il nome dall’omonimo paesino di Bagni San Filippo, e si trovano alle pendici del monte Amiata montagna da sempre famosa per le sue acque curative.Le terme erano infatti note già ai tempi dei romani come testimoniano i diversi ritrovamenti archeologici nella zona. Fu sotto la famiglia dei Medici che divennero grande sito di interesse: Lorenzo il Magnifico in persona le visitò nel 1485, e il Granduca Ferdinando II venne qui nel 1635 per liberarsi di un fastidioso “mal di capo”. Le particolari proprietà di cementazione delle acque di San Filippo furono utilizzate poi dall’architetto toscano Leonardo de Vegni, che inventò così la plastica dei tartari nel XVIII secolo, una tecnica con la quale realizzò apprezzatissime opere d’arte. I bagni sono anche una zona di interesse naturalistico: le formazioni rocciose cambiano colore a seconda della stagione, e passano dal bianco pallido della calda estate al marroncino verdastro dell’inverno ricco di piogge. La roccia più grande e famosa è la Balena Bianca, così chiamata per la formazione calcarea che ricorda la bocca di una balena.
Palermo, Sicily, Italy. A Walk in the Baroque Church of St. Giuseppe dei Teatini
San Giuseppe dei Teatini is a church in the Sicilian city of Palermo. Located near the Quattro Canti, is considered one of the most outstanding examples of the Sicilian Baroque in Palermo.
The church was built at the beginning of the 17th century by Giacomo Besio. It has a majestic though simple façade. In the centre niche is housed a state of San Gaetano, founder of the Theatines order. Another striking feature is the large dome with a blue and yellow majolica covering. The tambour decorated with double columns was designed by Giuseppe Mariani.
The interior has a Latin cross plan with a nave and two aisles, divided by marble columns of variable height. The inner decoration is an overwhelming parade of Baroque art, with stuccoes by Paolo Corso and Giuseppe Serpotta. Great frescoes can be seen in the nave, in the vault of the transept: these were painted by Filippo Tancredi, Guglielmo Borremans and Giuseppe Velasquez. The frescoes were severely damaged during World War II, but have been accurately restored.
La chiesa di San Giuseppe dei Teatini è un edificio di culto situato nel centro storico di Palermo. Occupa l'area delimitata a nord dalla strada del Cassaro (odierno Corso Vittorio Emanuele), a oriente da Via Maqueda e si affaccia su piazza Pretoria. Costituisce il vertice del mandamento Palazzo Reale o Albergaria e ingloba la facciata sud di Piazza Vigliena o dei Quattro Canti.
Il prospetto su Corso Vittorio Emanuele è costituito dall'ingresso principale e da due raccordi arcuati laterali: sulla sinistra è la facciata del cantone sud di Piazza Vigliena, per simmetria sulla piazzetta San Giuseppe è realizzato il «quinto canto»,decorato nel 1844.
L'impianto dell'edificio è a croce latina alata, cupola con lanterna e cappelle nelle navate laterali. L'aula è suddivisa da colonne con capitelli corinzi sostenenti 12 archi, nei pennacchi sono presenti affreschi raffiguranti i 12 apostoli opere del palermitano Antonio Manno del 1799.
Sulla cornice della navata centrale poggia la volta a botte tutta ornata di grandi stucchi dorati di Paolo Corso su disegni di Giacomo Amato e di affreschi del messinese Filippo Tancredi del 1693 raffiguranti L'Apoteosi di San Gaetano e il Ciclo di episodi della vita del santo. Il tetto, la volta centrale, gli affreschi sono totalmente ricostruiti, su scorta di fotografie, dopo gli ultimi eventi bellici.
La cupola è opera di Giuseppe Mariani da Pistoia. L'esterno è interamente maiolicato. L'affresco interno della cupola opera di Guglielmo Borremans raffigura La caduta degli angeli ribelli del 1724.

Sicily | Trapani & Egadi Islands | Italy Travel Diary
Last summer in Sicily. My first trip to this part of Italy and the beginning of two months of solo travel. The port town of Trapani on the west coast smells like salt and fresh seafood and sounds like seagulls chatting above neighbours on their balconies. The boat trip to the sparkling aqua coves of Levanzo and Favignana, the Egadi Islands, marked the beginning of an endless summer of adventures.
