Skåne County (Swedish: Skåne län), sometimes referred to as Scania County in English, is the southernmost county or län, of Sweden, basically corresponding to the traditional province Skåne. It borders the counties of Halland, Kronoberg and Blekinge. The seat of residence for the Skåne Governor is the town of Malmö. The headquarters of Skåne Regional Council is the town of Kristianstad.
The present county was created in 1997 when Kristianstad County and Malmöhus County were merged, and it covers around 3% of Sweden's total area, but its population of 1,250,000 comprises 13% of Sweden's total population.
Scania, also known by its local name Skåne is the southernmost province (landskap) of Sweden which consists of a peninsula on the southern tip of the Scandinavian Peninsula and some islands close to it. Scania is roughly equivalent to the modern Skåne County (Skåne län). The responsibility for overseeing implementation of state policy in the county is administered by the County Administrative Board. Within Scania there are 33 municipalities that are independent and separate from the Scania Regional Council which has its seat in Kristianstad. The largest city is Malmö, which is also the third largest city in Sweden.

In Ystad lived Estonian-Swedish artist and poet Arno Vihalemm most of his life, until the end of life.
The place name is first mentioned in 1244, then as Viistatha.
1285 the name Ystath is written. A number of interpretations of the name have been made. Some have said that Y: a designated place Öja and that the place was Öja's beach.
Another interpretation has been that Y has been confused with you in the meaning of the city of israel.
Others have thought that the deceased was originally Y (r), that is, the name of Idegran. Another interpretation has been that the deceased was Ly in the sense that seafarers in the bay sought shelter for hard winds. The most recent interpretation is based on the oldest reference 1244 where the derivative is the word We.
A We was a Viking era, often located near the coast.
1100s
Through the Danish conquests along the southern Baltic coast in the late 1100s during Absalon's bishop in Roskilde and Archbishop of Lund, leadership created peace around the Baltic coasts. At the same time, German Hansan arose which made herring fish and fish trade attractive along the Skåne coast. At the mouth of Vassaån, therefore, probably reached the end of the 11th century a fish market place.
1200s
Gråbrödraklostret in Ystad.
Ystad is mentioned for the first time in 1244 when King Erik and his brother Abel visited the city. The oldest city was on a hill just west of Vassaån. Here the city church was built St. Mary's Church, one of Skåne's oldest churches in brick. Today, however, only a small part of the original church remains.
Directly next to the church, the town square was excavated and its town hall was also built. The town hall's original medieval basement is still preserved.
A Franciscan monastery was founded in the city either in 1258 or 1267 during an Archbishop's intrigue play when the church and the royal power were in conflict. However, Ystad continued to be a royal city, which to some extent is confirmed by the seal of the lion as a heraldic figure.
Ystad in the 1300s.
Around 1300, the city was expanded by new buildings at the height just east of Vassaån. Here was the new district's church, St. Nicolai. Vassaån had during the Middle Ages such a powerful flow of water that the Franciscan monastery could even build a watermill by the river. In 1363, councilors were mentioned for the first time in Ystad.
These must, however, have existed already at the founding of the city. In 1376 there are the oldest preserved writings of a german company in the city.
The company was a trade fair for German merchants. In the so-called Schonenfahren archive in Lübeck there is a medieval sketch of the building. A Heligandshus is mentioned for the first time in 1398. The hospital, consisting of church, cemetery and hospital building, has been located to the area east of the river. Among other things, you have found skeletons and a sparrow of 294 coins from the years 1440-1513
