CHANDANNAGAR : France of Bengal by Tourist Destination
Embracing the banks of the Ganges River, just 30 km north of Kolkata, India is the small, beautiful erstwhile French colony. Chandannagar was established as a French colony in 1673 . Formerly known as Chandannagore, Chandannagar, today, continues to house remnants of French colonization, despite its turbulent past. In fact, though the rest of India won independence in 1947, Chandannagar continued to remain a stronghold of the French till 1950.
Chandannagar Gate:
Constructed in 1937, to mark the Fall of Bastille, the gate has the slogan of the French Revolution Liberté, égalité, fraternité (Liberty, equality and fraternity) etched on it.
Chandannagar Strand:
Situated on the banks of the Ganges, this is a beautiful, well maintained tourist spot. It is beautifully decorated with lights, lush green trees, a huge number of seats for people to spend time and even well studded pavements. The tree-shaded promenade along the river is about 1 km (0.62 mi) in length and 7 meters (23 ft) in width. It is a popular spot for local people and tourists alike, who love to stroll along enjoying the breeze and watching the small boats sail by.
The Sacred Heart Church of Chandannagar (l'Eglise du Sacré Cœur):
It was designed by French Architect Jacques Duchatz. The church was inaugurated by Paul Goethals on 27 Jan. 1884. The church stands for over two centuries to mark the beauty of the architecture during the French period — a good place to visit for the historians and tourists alike.
Chandannagore Museum and Institute (Institut de Chandernagor):
Another important landmark in the town is the erstwhile Duplex Mansion, which serves as the Chandannagar Museum today. It boasts a collection of French antiques (such as cannons used in Anglo-French war, wooden furniture of the 18th century, etc.) which are difficult to find anywhere else in the world.
Chandannagar Cemetery:
The French Cemetery contains 150 tombs and is located on the Grand Trunk Road opposite Lal Dighi (a large lake). Amongst the remarkable people buried there, one can find the tomb of Duplessis, the founding father of French Chandannagar and also the one of pioneering meteorologist Henry Storm Piddington.
Patal-Bari(The Underground House):
The building is another beautiful example of the advancement in the knowledge of architecture and the aesthetic sense of the people of those earlier days. Its lowest floor is submerged in the River Ganges. The Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore frequently visited the place and appreciated a lot about the building. He mentioned Patal-bari in many of his famous novels. The famous social reformer Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar also stayed in the building. The house was owned by the Zamindars of nearby Mankundu.
Nandadulal Temple:
Nandadulal Temple was built in 1740 by Indranarayan Roychoudhury presents an excellent example of ancient Indian sculptures. It is built in the do chalha style. The temples old idol of Lord Krishna was thrown away into the pond behind the temple by a general .Later the pieces of the idols were fished out and submerged in Varanasi.
Jagatdhatri Puja, Lighting and Procession:
The pomp and show of the Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar is very well known all over India. It is heard that Indranarayan Chowdhury introduced the Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar even before 1750.The beauty of the festival in Chandannagar is mainly due to the collaborative conception between the French and Bengalis. Remarkable feature remaining its procession, second largest in the world after Rio de Janeiro's, with its magnificent lightings .The Lighting and Procession of this festival brings in a number of tourists from all over the world.

Chandannagar Strand – The Top Attractions
Chandannagar is a popular town of the Hooghly district, but equally popular is the Chandannagar Strand. There is a magic quality about it and soaking in the splendors of the old town has its own excitement. It’s an area that combines the natural beauty with the sweetness of the Chandannagar history. The aura of the spot is as such that it attracts visitors round the year.
Attractions
The Chandannagar Strand has many significant (historical) structures that keep the visitors interested for long. It’s the overall appeal of the spot that draws everyone close to its vicinity on a regular basis. Given below is a brief list of some of the top attractions of the spot that has been highlighted in this video.
1. The Chandannagar Strand – It’s comfortably located on the banks of the Hooghly River on the G. T. Road. Stretching over a little more than a thousand meters in length it has the collection of some significant structures overlooking the Hooghly River. The entire stretch remains in full bloom round the year. Together, the lush green planktons, decorated parks with ample sitting spaces and playing equipment for the children make this place a must visit for all the age groups. None-the-less it’s one of the best places to view the river.
2. The Hooghly River – The cool breeze and the rippling waters of the river cast a magic spell on visitors. Besides, it has inspired several poets, authors and the common men down the years. Sometimes, the sight of sailing vessels draws a lot of curiosity and excitement among the visitors.
3. The Vivekananda Mandir (Temple) – Swami Vivekananda’s life is an inspiration for most of us. He was the disciple of Saint Ramakrishna Paramahansa. His speeches and sermons hold true to life even today. He is not only popular in India but also abroad. The Vivekananda Mandir (Temple) is a meditation center on the Strand on the banks of the Hooghly River.
4. The Institut De Chandernagor – It’s an age-old museum that has a library. It has ancient and rare French collections on display. Besides, it’s the French language study center as well.
5. The Bhasa Shahid Minar Udyan – It’s another big attraction of the Strand. It’s a beautifully decorated park with green trees and shrubs. Besides, it has wonderful sitting spaces for the comfort of the visitors. The Minar is at the top of a circular marble platform.
6. The St. Joseph’s Convent – It’s one of the top schools of the locality for the education of girls. Everyone dream to get their children educated from this school and the institution has been fulfilling the dreams successfully for more than one hundred and fifty years now.
7. The Sacred Heart Church – It highlights the beauty and creative architecture prevalent during the French period in Chandannagar. The interior of the church is equally attractive as the exterior. Since it is a sacred place one needs to maintain silence here.
8. The Rabindra Bhavan – The venue organizes some of the important cultural programs and events on a regular basis. It is dedicated to our beloved poet Rabindranath Tagore.
9. The Rani Ghat – The Rani Ghat is another attraction of the region. A goddess Kali Temple is situated inside near the entrance of the Ghat. Besides, a regular ferry service is operational here for the convenience of the people. The Jagatdal town is located on the other side of the riverbank.
10. The Other Attractions – A prominent feature of the Strand is the large size structure of Lord Krishna holding the bow and arrow on a chariot. It depicts an important battle scene from the epic Mahabharata. Besides, another large size structure depicts ‘the ship of the desert’, that is the camel. Here, a man is standing before a camel holding its ropes by the hands.
