What is DJIBOUTI?
Have you ever heard of the country called DJIBOUTI? If not, don't feel embarrassed... because it's a very tiny country on the Horn of Africa that gets minimal tourism -- roughly 70,000 visitors per year.
Over the last 2 days, I have explore every facet of the capital & biggest city called Djibouti City. I find this place to be the most interesting country in Africa.
Here are some of my quick realizations:
- It's VERY EXPENSIVE -- I have spent more than $400 in the last 2 days and I haven't done much other than walk around, take a few taxis, eat 4 meals & sleep (keep in mind my visa was $90 and my hotel was $105).
- Walking around the streets feels very much like France, from the colonization period that started in 1884 and ended in 1977. The people here speak French (first), Arabic (second) and English (third, if any at all).
- There is a LOT OF SECURITY everywhere -- police/military guards standing on every corner (literally) with giant guns strapped to their backs. It is kind of crazy and very intimidating, but safe.
- About a quarter of Djibouti's population (~250,000 people) are living in extreme poverty, which is more extreme than you'd think given that this country is so expensive. A massive contrast between rich & poor.
All of my thoughts on this mysterious country, and more, are in this video. Have you ever been to Djibouti?

Naulakha temple in Rajgir
Naulakha Temple Rajgir Temple.
Rajgir is a city in Nalanda district of current Indian state Bihar. The city was in a valley surrounded by seven hills: Vaibhara, Ratna, Saila, Sona, Udaya, Chhatha, and Vipula. Mention of this place in many epics and historical scripts; add more to its historical values. This was the first capital of the kingdom Magadha, a state that would eventually evolve into the Mauryan Empire. Mahabharata has mentioned stories of Jarashanda, the King of this place and his fight with Pandavas. As per legends Bhim, the 3rd Pandav split Jarasandha in two halves and threw those facing opposite to each other so that they could not join. This place is also mentioned in many of the Buddhist and Jain scriptures. Rajgir is also famous for its association with Kings Bimbisara and Ajatashatru. Ajatashatru kept his father Bimbsara in captivity here and also credited with moving the capital to Pataliputra or Patna.

We went to a few fireworks stores in Chennai, India and asked about the largest and longest crackers they had. What they had was ten thousand wala which is made by connecting 10,000 firecracker shells. There are no 20,000 walas, but you can make them by connecting two 10,000 walas. We weren't interested in that, so we bought the ten thousand wala for 80 dollars (5,000 rupees).
We rolled it out on a street in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and it came out to nearly 50 feet. This was on the day of Deepavali festival. A crowd gathered to see it and we fired it up. It lasted a little longer than 7 minutes, but it was a great sight to watch. This may be the fastest way to spend five thousand rupees in India! Anyway, we had a great Diwali in Chennai.
Thanks to free music from Teknoaxe, I have added the track Martial arts on a mountain.
