Nangan
Matsu’s largest island, Nangan is its cultural and political/administrative hub, and a very busy place compared to the rest of the archipelago.
Niujiao Village in Nangan’s northeast, once again flourishing, was one of the first to undergo a renaissance. Note how the homes’ granite blocks are in two shades, yellow and blue. The yellow are from Matsu, blue from Fujian; as a rough rule, blue meant you were more prosperous. Wulinggong Temple, above Niujiao’s harbor, has the bright orange-red exterior seen on many local temples. The color symbolizes flames; since already “on fire,” why would real fire need to visit? As with many homes, exaggerated vertical eaves are also supposed to help block sparks from nearby fires.
A 10-minute walk along the pathway that starts behind the temple takes you to the tip of the cape here, which is occupied by Stronghold No. 12 – not quite abandoned, for its two-floor command post/quarters has been “occupied” by “Thornbirds Book & Café,” an indie enterprise of great character that serves up splendid views of hilly Beigan to the north. The building is attached to such a steep rock face that you feel you’re hovering over the water rather than beside it.
Picturesquely filling up a mountain-backed niche of flat land behind a sheltered cove, compact, narrow-laned Jinsha Village in Nangan’s southwest is another imperial-era settlement now breathing strongly again, with new homestays and shops opening. One example is funky Matsu 1st Hostel, where cheap, cubicle-style single- and double-person rooms are offered. Housed in a true Matsu rarity, one of its east Fujian-style courtyard residences, beautifully restored, it’s one of four Nangan/Beigan youth-oriented homestays run by local entrepreneur Eddy Chuang (matsuhostel.com; Chinese).
The Iron Fort east of Jinsha Village, both on and inside a rocky outcrop in a small bay, once protected frogmen units. Narrow tunnels within lead to sniper slots, gun emplacements, quarters, and a kitchen. Outside, note the dog kennel. When tensions were high, PRC frogmen units staged night attacks, poisoning the guard dogs and taking human ears as trophies and proof of success. Many died in such lightning attacks over the years, here and elsewhere in Matsu.
Day Trip to Dongju Island (Matsu Islands, Taiwan)
Part of Juguang Township / 莒光鄉 along with Xiju Island / 西莒 (West Ju), Dongju Island / 東莒 (East Ju) is the southernmost of the Matsu Islands / 馬祖群島 / 马祖列岛 ( Juguang township can be reached by ferry (NTD200 or $6.66 one way - 50 minutes, then 10-15 minutes between the two islands) from Fuao Harbor in Nangan / 南竿鄉 / 南竿乡 or by helicopter which only operates during the winter and priority is given to local residents. Sites visited included:
- Fish Trail. Yulu (Fish Road) Historic Trail is a century old. In the old days, when times were hard, local residents seeking to keep themselves clothed and fed shuttled back and forth over this trail between Dapu and Fuzheng.
- Dapu. The Chinese words for Dapu were originally written to mean “Big Little Harbor.” In earlier days, when the waters around Dapu yielded a rich catch of yellow croaker, pomfret, and ribbon fish, this was the second-largest village on the island, after Fuzheng. The mouth of this natural harbor faces south; the scenery is lovely, and the facing Duimian (“opposite”) Mountain blocks the northerly winds in winter. The islanders customarily switched the harbors they used for fishing according to seasonal wind conditions, using Fuzheng in summer and Dapu in winter. Before the ROC government moved to Taiwan in 1949 Dapu was home to more than 200 residents in over 50 households, and the harbor was crowded with dozens of fishing boats. The Lord of the White Horse Temple here has a history of more than 170 years. But the residents moved away as fishing declined, and today the settlement is home to not a single soul.
- Mysterious Little Bay - Viewed from a certain angle, the sea-eroded pillars and trenches of this mysterious little bay lying south of Fuzheng Village give plenty of range to the imagination. There is a folk tale about the fulfilling of a romance between the immortals Lü Dong-bin and He Xian-gu here, so it is also named “Lü -He Cliff.” Below the platform to the right is a horizontal rock said to be the scepter of the Jade Emperor, placed there to subdue Lü and He. The distant ridge to the right of the platform looks just like a stone lion guarding the scepter. At high tide, an eroded column rising from the sea below the stone lion looks like a shark; at low tide, it resembles a rhino and stone lion together. A tunnel above the east side of the bay, called by the locals “Swallows’ Nest,” is indeed a gathering place for birds. The tunnel runs to the seacoast, and was once used by oystermen on their way to the coastal harvest. It is also said to have been used by the local people to hide from the pirates who once ravaged the Matsu islands. The tunnel is not safe to enter, since it contains unexploded munitions.
- Fuzheng. Once the most prosperous village on Dongju, but due to the gradual decrease in fish catches, residents of Fuzheng moved elsewhere, and it is no longer the bustling place it once was; all that is left are the dilapidated stone houses, the Dongquan Lighthouse overlooking the village, and the White Horse Respected King Temple that protects it.
- Dongquan Lighthouse. Also called Dongju Lighthouse, it was built in 1872 to guide ships to Fuzhou when China was forced to open it and four other treaty ports to trade in the late Qing Dynasty. It was designated a second-grade historic site in 1988. Its body is made of granite; it rises 19.5 meters and casts a beam of light, diffracted through a crystal lens, that can be seen 16.7 nautical miles (about 31 kilometers) away.
MIAOLI Old Mountain Line Railbike (苗栗舊山線軌道自行車)
On this one-day trip we experienced rail-biking on the Old Mountain Line. That was fun! We also visited the strawberry village of Dahu and the Hakka village of Beipu.
If you want to do the rail-biking make a reservation on this site (I was wrong, they do have English now):

TEXT: STEVEN CROOK
The picturesque village of Shengxing has one of Taiwan’s best-known train stations, which is surprising considering regular passenger services on the railroad that passes through here ceased more than 20 years ago. Between 1903 and 1998, what’s called the Old Mountain Line carried local, express, and freight trains across the Da’an River into the greater Taichung area. At an altitude of 402.36m, Shengxing Railway Station was the highest station above sea level on Taiwan's conventional railway network. The station, a quaint wooden cottage-style building built in 1930, is a highly photogenic structure.
After the completion of a shorter, straighter alternative to the Old Mountain Line, 15.9km of track, along with eight tunnels and three bridges, were decommissioned. The Shengxing station was closed, but never forgotten – and since last year tourists have had a new reason to come here.
Sanyi Rail Bike Fun
The Old Mountain Line Rail Bike attraction offers an unusual 90-minute experience, a railway journey amid gorgeous scenery at the speed of a bicycle, but with no pedaling required. “Rail bike” is something of a misnomer. Each vehicle is about the size of a golf cart, has four train-type wheels, and runs on unmodified rail tracks. A canopy protects the passengers (there are four seats) from sunshine and rain.
I was impressed by the number of staff on duty, and their diligence. Safety belts must be fastened, and before starting the 6km-long ride from the train station to Tunnel No. 6, each “driver” – I was the one on our “locomotive” – is shown how to start the electric motor, release the hand brake, and accelerate. If you’ve ridden one of the scooters that are ubiquitous in Taiwan, you can do this. If anything, it’s far easier: There’s no need to steer, and the vehicle has been rigged to never exceed 12 km/h.
We were instructed to pull away from the station at intervals. Having a good bit of space between each rail bike is a good idea, as drivers often get distracted by the scenery and slow right down. Almost immediately, we were heading through the 725m-long tunnel south of the station, disturbing the bats that roost within.
Much of the route is single-track, and soon we were traversing a narrow bridge far above a mountain creek. Looking left, we enjoyed excellent views of one of Miaoli’s most-adored sights: the Longteng Bridge.
We were instructed to park our rail bikes at the point on the track where riders look down onto Liyu Elementary School. Glancing toward the west, we could see rugged Mt. Huoyan, located by the Taiwan Strait coast. Its bare, sandy ridges are highly unusual in lush, tropical Taiwan.
Everyone then proceeded on foot through Tunnel No. 6 to the Neishechuan Iron Bridge. The bridge itself is off-limits, but from its north end it’s possible to enjoy views up and down the waterway that drains the Liyutan Reservoir. After learning about this spot and the history of the railway line, we rode back to Shengxing.
If you’d like to take a look at this part of the Old Mountain Line without signing up for the rail bike experience, you can reach the iron bridge via Township Road 52. Steps connect the road with the southern end of the tunnel. There’s nothing to stop you walking north through the tunnel, but a flashlight is advised.

A Scenic View from Jinguashi, Taiwan
Jinguashi, located in the Ruifang District of New Taipei City, is famous for its gold and copper mines. The direct translation of the name is translates to “Gold Melon Rock”, as according to history, the place is famous for its vast gold mine in the late 19th to early 20th century. After the mines dried up and the gold rush ended, the area still remains intact with stunning images of a past era, during year 2002; it was also nominated for the honor of UNESCO World Heritage site. Situated between the mountains and the coastline, Jinguashi boasts exceptionally beautiful scenery.
