Horta on the Island of Faial, Archipelago of the Azores
Horta on the Island of Faial, Archipelago of the Azores, was our first
port of disembarkation after a seven day transatlantic crossing from
Fort Lauderdale, Fl.
Horta (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈɔɾtɐ]) is a single municipality and city in the western part of the Archipelago of the Azores, encompassing the island of Faial. The population in 2011 was 14,994, in an area of 173.06 km². The city of Horta itself has a population of about 7,000. Its name is a transliteration of the last name of a Flemish explorer from the 15th century: Josse van Huerter.
The city contains the Horta Regional Museum which has a permanent exhibit, Exhibition of Capelinhos Volcano, that details in photographs the recent (1957) volcanic eruption in the Azores. The museum also contains a large collection of scale models of buildings, ships, and people carved from fig kernels carved by Euclides Rosa.
The marina is a primary stop for yachts crossing the Atlantic, and its walls, and walkways are covered in paintings created by visitors who noted the names of their vessels, crews, and the years they visited.

Capelinhos Volcano | Faial Island, Azores, Portugal
Vulcão dos Capelinhos (Capelinhos volcano) is our favorite place in the Faial Island, another island of Azores archipelago. The place looks like from another planet and it shows how powerful nature can be. Unfortunately, weather changes rapidly on Azores and the second most fascinating place of Faial island, Caldeira, stayed hidden in a thick fog.

Caldeira Crater - Faial - Azores - 4K Ultra HD
Dominating the deserted centre of the island, the impressive Caldeira do Faial, is one of the island’s major nature attractions to visit. The Caldeira is the vast crater of an extinct volcano, from which the island originated. Reaching 1,043 m at the Cabeço Gordo, the island’s highest point, the crater has a diameter of about 1.5 km. Offering a unique landscape with green-covered slopes where junipers, tree-heather, cedars and ferns prevail, the whole area of the crater has been declared nature reserve. When the weather conditions are good, the views from the rim of the crater at a height of about 900 m down the steep crater walls to the 400 m deep crater bottom and across the island are spectacular.
