LISBON Castle Tour! Exploring Sao Jorge. Travel to Lisbon.
Welcome to Lisbon! In this vlog we tour the beautiful Sao Jorge Castle and the city itself. Lisbon is a busy, vibrant city with no shortage or things to do.
The city, with its amazing pastel buildings, fresh seafood, and incredibly mix of attractions, definitely showed us the best Europe can offer. We spent the day going around the city, visiting amazing places, and trying new things. One of the highlights was the famous Sao Jorge Castle, or in English, Saint George Castle; this beautiful place is definitely a must, if you come here, you will find the best views of the city, incredible history, and jaw-dropping architecture.

Lisbon—which came out of a dire recession galvanized and game for anything—has found itself in the unexpected position being of Europe's new capital of cool. As construction cranes begin to fill the city's skyline again, once-dilapidated palaces and mansions are being repackaged as hipster hangouts, from gourmet food courts to boutique hotels; and the city's once-seedy waterfront along the Tejo River is in the midst of a marvelous makeover. In a visit to Lisbon, you’ll see that the city retains a sense of nostalgia—keeping an eye on preserving the past even as it grows and expands.
Travel to Lisbon to immerse yourself in a European city unlike any other. Whether whiling away the hours sipping coffee on one of the open squares or rummaging through the boutiques on the winding side streets, there is so much to see in Lisbon. Portugal’s capital welcomes travelers to an old world anew, where historic castles meet modern art museums and sleepy storefronts give way to vibrant nightclubs.
Sao Jorge Castle (Saint George Castle)
At the top of the hill of the Alfama in Lisbon is the Caste of St. George, which is an old Moorish fortification that sits on a hill overlooking Lisbon and the Tagus River. You can get some nice panoramic views of the city from here, and they also have peacocks roaming the grounds. St. George Castle, or Sao Jorge, s a ruin, but the walls, the entrances, the gates, the staircases are all spectacular and the view is astonishing. It really makes it worth your while to come up and visit the castle.

What to see and do in Lisbon
1. Belem District: Mosteiro de Jeronimos Church, Torre de Belem (Tower of Belem), Pasteis de Belem (Custard Tart Restaurant).
2. Alfama District: Se (Catherdal), wander the windy and hilly streets for cafes and tascas (restaurants).
3. Baixa District: The Low district with Rua Augusta (pedestrian street), trains to Sintra.
4. Bairro Alto District: The bar district in Lisbon, home of the nightlife of Lisbon.
5. Castelo Sao Jorge: Views from the castle are amazing, more ruins than castle, but again great views.
6. Sao Vicente da Fora: Amazing church with great collection of Azulejos (Blue Portuguese Tiles) of fables.
7. Jardim Zoologico: The Lisbon Zoo is great for all ages.
8. Museu de Arte Antiga: Stock full of European art.
9. Gulbeinken Museum: Eclectic collection of thousands of years of art.
10. The Expo: Home of the World Expo 1998 this district has been built as a modern oasis in Lisbon. It has shopping, restaurants (the Brazilian restaurants are the best) and the largest Oceanarium in Europe (great for kids).

Lisbon was the final stop of our European tour and we couldn't have chosen a better destination. The city immediately won us over with it's cheery pastel buildings, delicious fresh seafood, and it's unique mix of attractions. It also didn't hurt that we had clear blue skies the whole week we were there! Our first stop of the day was Sao Jorge Castle, which is an old Moorish fortification that sits on a hill overlooking Lisbon and the Tagus River. You can get some nice panoramic views of the city from here, and they also have peacocks roaming the grounds.
Miradouro das Portas do Sol is one of the many look out points in Lisbon that offers postcard-perfect views of the city. This particular terrace overlooks the Alfama district and it is always popular with tourists.
Carmo is a mediaeval convent that was ruined during the 1755 earthquake, and today it is used as an archaeological museum. It's a strange feeling walking down the ruined nave of the church and seeing blue skies above your head, but that's exactly what makes it worth a visit.
Another place to visit is Belem Tower. The tower was built on the banks of the Tagus River, and it was meant to act as both a defense system and a ceremonial gateway into Lisbon.
The Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most visited sights in Lisbon. It's one of the best examples of Late Gothic Manueline architecture, so have a close look at the intricate detailing when you visit.
A fun way to get around Lisbon's hilly streets is by riding the trams. There are different lines across the city, but #28 is the most popular one with visitors.
The Santa Justa lift is an elevator that connects the lower streets of Baixa with Carmo Square, and it is the only remaining vertical elevator in Lisbon. Though it is meant to serve a functional role, it is also quite popular with visitors who find the elevator a novel idea.

We feel like we know this city well, so in this Lisbon travel guide we’re going to show you around what we think are some of the best attractions. We only had 3 days in the city this time around, so this Lisbon itinerary will be perfect for any of you visiting on a long weekend escape.
We kicked off our first morning with a ride on Lisbon’s most iconic tram line:#28 bound for panoramic vistas and a hilltop castle. After postcard perfect views looking down over Alfama we went towards the castle, with a little detour offering a bit of street art.
St George Castle is a Moorish castle that looks down over the historic centre and the Tagus River. It’s one of the main tourist landmarks in the city and you get great views of Lisbon.
We circled back to visit the Jeronimos Monastery. Construction of this monastery was ordered by King Manuel, who selected the religious order of Hieronymite monks to occupy the monastery.
Pastéis de nata were created by the monks at the Jerónimos Monastery, and seeing as we were right next door, this was a very logical stop. After browsing at the Sunday Market we walked over to the Santa Justa Elevator, which is the only street lift in Lisbon for public service.

LISBON: Alfama - oldest district (1/5) Portugal
Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon/Lisboa (Portugal), spreading on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tagus/Tejo river. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning hot fountains or baths. It contains many important historical attractions, as well as an abundance of Fado bars and restaurants.
Overlooking the Alfama is the medieval Castle of São Jorge, offering the best views of the city.
On the slopes of Alfama there are terraces/viewpoints ('miradouros') from which to see the city, like the Miradouro de Santa Luzia (near the church of the same name and over remnants of the Moorish city walls) and the Miradouro das Portas do Sol.
Near the Miradouro de Santa Luzia is located the Museum of Decorative Arts (Museu de Artes Decorativas), a 17th-century mansion with magnificent interiors.
Among the churches of the Alfama are Lisbon Cathedral (12th–14th century, oldest of the city), the Convento da Graça (18th century), the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora (late 16th–18th century), and the baroque Church of Santa Engrácia (17th century), now converted into the National Pantheon ('Panteão Nacional'). Here important Portuguese personalities are buried, like presidents of the republic and writers.
