'Wild Ireland': A Two Day Trek and Wild Camp in the Derryveagh Mountains, Donegal
Read the blog of this 2 day adventure on:
This video, the first in a new series of ‘Wild Ireland’ films, follows a 30 km two day trek and overnight bivouac in the Derryveagh Mountains of County Donegal in mid-March 2015. In the valley close to Dunlewy Lough, the first flush of spring was everywhere: birdsong filled the air, tentative green shoots sprouted from seemingly lifeless brambles, catkins dangled from winter weary boughs and saffron yellow coltsfoot flowers erupted from amid paper dry and ragged yellow grasses like condensed droplets of sunshine. But up on the mountains, where we endured a bitter easterly wind, winter had yet to release its icy grip and on the highest ground, the last snows of winter lingered on. Our tent was silvered with frost, icicles oozed from frozen peat hags, verglas smeared the naked granite and ice-covered bog loughs gleamed like glass in the deep chill of early morning.
It is possible to do this route, which offers truly joyful walking in one of the wildest corners of Ireland, taking in eight summits and breath-taking views down over the Poisoned Glen, as a circular walk from the excellent Errigal Youth Hostel. For a GPS track of the route see: mountainviews.ie/track/report/2835/

Christmas in Derry - Top Attractions in Derry/Londonderry
Merry Christmas!
Derry - or as it is also famously known as Londonderry - is a city on the River Foyle in Northern Ireland, that is known for the intact 17th century Derry's walls with its seven gates. There are different touristic attractions in Derry/Londondery in general, such as St. Columb's Cathedral, Peace Bridge, the Tower Museum, and more (
During the Christmas time, every other city will be a piece of art with its decorations, places to visit, and the things to be done, and we are taking you through the tour we have made during this time of the year in Derry/Londonderry and the places we have managed to visit.
Our first stop was the Guildhall, which is the building in which the elected members of Derry and Strabane District Council meet. This building was built back in 1890 and it is a place that one should pass by and see while being in Derry. The Guildhall is located in the center of the city, just outside the city walls and close to the Peace Bridge (
Since the Guildhall is located just next to Peace Bridge then it is a must for you to pass by it. Peace Bridge in Derry/Londonderry is a cycle and foot bridge across the River Foyle in Derry, Northern Ireland, that opened in 2011, connecting Ebrington Square with the rest of the city centre. Peace Bridge is the newest one to be built in the city of Derry/Londonderry (
Every single place is different during Christmas time, the whole country turns into a glittery place. We have walked through the streets of Derry/Londonderry to see and feel how Christmas feels like in this city, we have gone to markets, played some games, got into some cafes, and managed to see all the decorations done to the buildings, the restaurants, the streets, the markets, etc.
There are different places to visit and things to do in Derry/Londonderry anytime of the year - whether its Christmas or not. When you are visiting the Guildhall in Derry during Christmas, try to make sure you are choosing the perfect timing so that you would be able to check the Winterland Market as well, which was held from the 13th to the 16th of December 2018. In this market, there was a cinema, the market itself, and the Winterland Market bar.
Are you still thinking about the places to go to in Derry, Northern Ireland? You could go to the Mussenden Temple ( hit the Causeway Coastal Route which is one of the famous destinations in all of Northern Ireland ( the Tower Museum which is spread over five floors and its uppermost level gives stunning panoramic views of the Walled City and River Foyle, as well as walking down the old streets of the city and getting more introduced to the history that lies within.
Throughout the years, we have been to different cities and places in Northern Ireland during the festive time of Christmas and New Years, we have been to Antrim Castle Gardens which was all set up with the Christmas decorations and vibes ( we have also been to Belfast Christmas Market before, walking within those booths standing there with their products and enjoying a hot chocolate while walking through the decorations ( and we have even done some Christmas shopping in Belfast in one of the most famous shopping places there which is known as Victoria Square ( we have seen before the beautiful Christmas lights in Dublin, Ireland ( and finally we loved being in Lisburn before during this festive season so we could also attend the Christmas vibes there (
And who would not enjoy wandering the streets of a city that is decorated for Christmas and the New Years? Almost nobody. Wherever you are headed, you will always find those decorations that will attract your eyes to them and which you will immediately fall in love with.
This was our Christmas trip to Derry/Londonderry in Northern Ireland, where have you been this Christmas or where are you planning to spend the New Years Eve? Share with us your plans!
