HIDDEN JEKYLL EPISODE FIVE
Gun Carriages Jekyll Island, Georgia, 1898:
Located on the south end of the island, these gun carriages were built in 1898 for the Spanish American War. They saw no action and the guns were removed before 1900. They represent one of the few sites in the state of Georgia designed specifically for defense during the Spanish American War. They are located deep in the woods and there is no marker designating their location.
Accessible via path originating at St. Andrew's Picnic Area, or via St. Andrews Cut Fire Control Road.
The gun mounts were discovered in 1965 when surveyors placed a USGS marker near the site. They were described as being tipped over at the time. They have since been righted.
BR0117 STATION DESCRIPTION
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1905 (IW) ON THE EDGE OF THE SAND HILLS OVERLOOKING ST. ANDREWS SOUND AT THE SOUTHERN END OF JEKYLL ISLAND. THE STATION IS THE CENTER OF A 4 IN IRON PIVOT AT THE CENTER OF A LARGE SQUARE IRON PLATE SECURED TO THE WESTERN ONE OF TWO CONCRETE GUN PLATFORMS WHICH WERE BUILT 'DURING THE SPANISH WAR. THE WESTERN HALVES OF THE PLATFORMS ARE SOMEWHAT BROKEN AND THE TWO IRON CARRIAGES ARE LYING ON THEIR SIDES 'TO THE WESTWARD OF THE PIVOTS. PIVOT REFERENCE IS 36.121 M. (118.51
BR0117'FT) FROM THE STATION N 82 DEG 19 MIN W.
From:
What you've found are two carriages for 10-inch Rodman guns. Technically, these were designated Barbette Carriage for 10-Inch Columbiad - Model 1861 Front Pintle.
Likely these originally mounted a pair of 8-inch converted rifles, i.e. former 10-inch Rodman guns that had been bored out and re-sleaved with 8-inch caliber rifled liners. These weapons were emplaced in large numbers during the Spanish-American war in so-called emergency batteries.
From the 1898 report of the chief of engineers, p. 712:
For the defense of Brunswick the following temporary batteries were constructed:
1. One battery at the south end of St Simons Island, commanding the approach to Brunswick through St Simons Sound and also the inside route from Savannah, Ga., to Fernandina, Fla. A magazine has been constructed of plank and covered with sand.
2. One battery on St Simons Island, east of the one described above. A magazine has been constructed of plank and covered with sand.
3. One battery at the north end of Jekyl Island.
4. One battery at the south end of Jekyl Island. A magazine has been constructed of plank and covered with sand.
The 1899 ARCE adds (pp. 882-83):
During the past fiscal year an artesian well was sunk at the battery on Jekyl Island and another on the light-house reservation at St Simons Island, near the batteries. During the storm of October, 1898, these batteries were considerably damaged by the washing away of sand and the flooding of magazines.
In the Cartographics branch of the National Archives, Drawer 187 Sheet 4 shows Emplacement at North end of Jekyll Island, GA, 1898.
These latter reports explain why there are no remains of any other structures. Ammunition was stored in magazines made of wood and covered with sand. Likely the troops were stationed in tents or wooden structures. All that remains are the gun carriages and a sand berm which may or may not be a dune or a fortification.
The guns were in place for only two years, which explains why there were no significant other structures. Why the carriages were left in place, but the guns removed, remains a mystery. Were they not worth removing, even for scrap value? What happened to the mounts at the North end, or St. Simons?
Another mystery of Hidden Jekyll!

About Me //
I am 25, from Marietta, Georgia and I started this channel in 2013 in my final semester of my college. After graduating from Auburn University in Alabama I spent four months in Europe and tried my hand at vloging. You can watch the whole series here and forgive me for filming it on my iPhone. Right after traveling I moved to DC where I lived for two years. Last summer I backpacked through Central America and produced a 10 part vlog series about that as well. I currently am traveling on World Race. The World Race is an 11 month mission trip to 11 countries. I post videos almost every day, so subscribe and stay a while if you want to see more.
- All filmed on a Canon S120, Canon G7x and Canon T3i.

Tourism in Argentina - Best Tourist Attractions
Argentina, officially named the Argentine Republic (Spanish: República Argentina), is a country located mostly in the southern half of South America. Sharing the bulk of the Southern Cone with Chile to the west, the country is also bordered by Bolivia and Paraguay to the north, Brazil to the northeast, Uruguay and the South Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Drake Passage to the south. With a mainland area of 2,780,400 km2 (1,073,500 sq mi), Argentina is the eighth-largest country in the world, the fourth largest in the Americas, and the largest Spanish-speaking nation. The sovereign state is subdivided into twenty-three provinces (Spanish: provincias, singular provincia) and one autonomous city (ciudad autónoma), Buenos Aires, which is the federal capital of the nation (Spanish: Capital Federal) as decided by Congress. The provinces and the capital have their own constitutions, but exist under a federal system. Argentina claims sovereignty over part of Antarctica, the Falkland Islands (Spanish: Islas Malvinas), and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
The earliest recorded human presence in modern-day Argentina dates back to the Paleolithic period. The country has its roots in Spanish colonization of the region during the 16th century. Argentina rose as the successor state of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, a Spanish overseas viceroyalty founded in 1776. The declaration and fight for independence (1810–1818) was followed by an extended civil war that lasted until 1861, culminating in the country's reorganization as a federation of provinces with Buenos Aires as its capital city. The country thereafter enjoyed relative peace and stability, with several waves of European immigration radically reshaping its cultural and demographic outlook. The almost-unparalleled increase in prosperity led to Argentina becoming the seventh wealthiest nation in the world by the early 20th century.
Following the Great Depression in the 1930s, Argentina descended into political instability and economic decline that pushed it back into underdevelopment, though it remained among the fifteen richest countries for several decades. Following the death of President Juan Perón in 1974, his wife Isabel Martínez de Perón ascended to the presidency. She was overthrown in 1976 by a U.S.-backed coup which installed a right-wing military dictatorship. The military government persecuted and murdered numerous political critics, activists, and leftists in the Dirty War, a period of state terrorism that lasted until the election of Raúl Alfonsín as President in 1983. Several of the junta's leaders were later convicted of their crimes and sentenced to imprisonment.
Argentina retains its historic status as a middle power in international affairs, and is a prominent regional power in the Southern Cone and Latin America. Argentina has the second largest economy in South America, the third-largest in Latin America and is a member of the G-15 and G-20 major economies. It is also a founding member of the United Nations, World Bank, World Trade Organization, Mercosur, Union of South American Nations, Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and the Organization of Ibero-American States. It is the country with the second highest Human Development Index in Latin America with a rating of very high. Because of its stability, market size and growing high-tech sector, Argentina is classified as a high-income economy in the 2019 fiscal year.
Tourism in Argentina is characterized by its cultural offerings and its ample and varied natural assets. The country had 5.57 million visitors in 2013, ranking in terms of the international tourist arrivals as the top destination in South America, and second in Latin America after Mexico. Revenues from international tourists reached US$4.41 billion in 2013, down from US$4.89 billion in 2012. The country's capital city, Buenos Aires, is the most visited city in South America. There are 30 National Parks of Argentina including many World Heritage Sites.

Nicaragua Travel
Officially the Republic of Nicaragua is the largest country in the Central American isthmus. The population of Nicaragua is slightly over 6 million. Nicaragua's capital, Managua, is the third-largest city in Central America. The multi-ethnic population includes indigenous peoples, Europeans, Africans, Asians, and people of Middle Eastern origin. The main language is Spanish. Native tribes on the eastern coast speak their own languages.
The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century. Nicaragua gained independence from Spain in 1821. Since its independence, Nicaragua has undergone periods of political unrest, dictatorship, and fiscal crisis—the most notable causes that led to the Nicaraguan Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. Nicaragua is a representative democratic republic, and has experienced economic growth and political stability in recent years. Daniel Ortega has been the president since 2007.
The mixture of cultural traditions has generated substantial diversity in art and literature, particularly the latter given the literary contributions of Nicaraguan poets and writers, including Rubén Darío, Pablo Antonio Cuadra and Ernesto Cardenal.[8] The biological diversity, warm tropical climate and active volcanoes make Nicaragua an increasingly popular tourist destination.
