Merida
Merida is a lovely smaller Spanish city for a peaceful get-away combined with cultural sight-seeing.
The town itself is the best part, with a curious mix of architecture from all ages. Palm trees decorate the town square where the entire population, (it would seem), appears each evening for pleasant company and a cup of coffee.
Numerous Roman monuments are scattered throughout Merida, including Trajan's arch, a classic temple, the world's longest extant Roman bridge, a Moorish citadel, a Roman amphitheater, and a fine example of a Roman theater (for plays).
If you're traveling through western Spain or eastern Portugal, Merida is worth a visit.

Barcelona - La Rambla, Port & Old Town
Arriving at mid-day we wasted no time and journeyed into Barcelona, beginning at La Rambla. This popular tourist shopping area is fun, crowded, and a little noisy.
We became truly interested when we ventured into the Gothic Quarter, containing Barcelona's older architecture and cathedral.
Catalonia has a tradition for progressive art and design. You can see it in the public buildings which include exaggerated forms and fanciful adaptations of classic styles.
The Port is set against a handsome line of traditional buildings, enhanced by opulent landscaping and palm trees. The newer, modern, parts of the complex extend over the water creating a pleasing combination.

Madrid - Landmarks, Museums, Palace
Now we'll explore the vibrant urban settings of Madrid, two of the many famous art museums - and end with a visit to the Royal Palace of Madrid.
The list of remarkable buildings, parks, plazas and landmarks is simply too long to include. Please enjoy this collage of images, which include the Puerta del Sol, the Gran Via, the Paseo del Prado, and many of the iconic landmarks and buildings.
We spent a whole day at the Prado Museum, the main Spanish national art museum. The collection includes representative pieces of the many Spanish masters, and a vast collection of classical works.
The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is also amazing, and for us, even better than the Prado. This collection includes many traditional, classical works - but also transitional, (impressionism, etc.), and modern works. (It's practically across-the-street from the Prado.) Visit both if you can!
We're no experts in Art, but seeing the very best is always uplifting and educational. Art helps us to understand the cultural frame-of-reference, and enhances our travel experiences.
We can't leave Madrid without touring the Royal Palace of Madrid. ('missed it last time) Today we're seeing a special tribute to Carlos - very interesting.... but we like the buildings, lovely rooms, and scenery even more.
Before we leave the area, we pay a brief visit to the Almudena Cathedral, (directly opposite the Palace). This monument has little historical fame, since it's a reconstruction - and uses multiple architectural styles. But... it works beautifully, and the overall impression is wonderful.

Exploring Dinan - Brittany, France
Dinan captures medieval character with charm, and very little tourist hype. The buildings, bastions and churches are genuine, and have been authentically restored. Some of these buildings date from the 13th century. Large segments of the city walls remain, and can be explored via a path around the town.
We stayed at the bottom of town, at the river Port. You can also stay in the upper town area - either way there are lots of ups and downs when you explore this town, but the sights are worth the climb either way.
Dinan is a walled Breton town and a commune in the Côtes-d'Armor department in northwestern France. Its geographical setting is exceptional. Instead of nestling on the valley floor like Morlaix, most urban development has been on the hillside, overlooking the river Rance. The area alongside the River Rance is known as the port of Dinan and is connected to the town by the steep streets Rue Jerzual and its continuation outside the walls the Rue de Petit Fort.

The Ebro or Ebre is one of the most important rivers on the Iberian Peninsula. It is the second longest river in the Iberian peninsula after the Tagus and the second biggest by discharge volume and by drainage area after the Duero.
The Ebro flows through the following cities: Reinosa in Cantabria; Frías and Miranda de Ebro in Castile and León; Haro, Logroño, Calahorra, and Alfaro in La Rioja; Tudela in Navarre; Alagón, Utebo, Zaragoza, and Caspe in Aragon; and Flix, Móra d'Ebre, Benifallet, Tivenys, Xerta, Aldover, Tortosa, and Amposta in Catalonia.
The source of the river Ebro is in Fontibre (Cantabria), from the Latin words Fontes Iberis, source of the Ebro. Close by is the big artificial lake Embalse del Ebro created by the damming of the river. The upper Ebro rushes through rocky gorges in Burgos Province. Flowing roughly eastwards it begins forming a wider river valley of limestone rocks when it reaches Navarre and La Rioja thanks to many tributaries flowing down from the Iberian System on one side, and the Navarre mountains and the western Pyrenees, on the other. There, the climate (the valley being isolated from sea air masses by surrounding mountains) becomes progressively more continental, with more extreme temperatures and drier characteristics, and therefore typically experiencing hot (sometimes very hot) and dry summers which closely resemble summers seen in arid and semiarid climates.
As it flows through Zaragoza the Ebro, is already a sizeable river. There, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar stands next to the Ebro. The soils in most of the valley are primarily poor soils: calcareous, pebbly, stony, and sometimes salted with saltwater endorheic lagoons. The semi-arid interior of the Ebro Valley has either drought summers and a semi-desert climate with rainfall between 400 and 600 millimetres (16 and 24 in), with a maximum in the fall and spring. It is covered with chaparral vegetation. Summers are hot and winters are cold.

Jerez de la Frontera & School of Equestrian Art
Jerez de la Frontera, or simply Jerez, is a Spanish city in the province of Cádiz. Jerez is known as a city of flamenco, sherry, horses, and motorcycles. (We don't know much about the motorcycles - except that Jerez hosts Grand Prix events that draw thousands of visitors.)
Some famous places in to the city are the Alcazar of Jerez, Church of San Miguel, Charterhouse of Jerez, and the Cathedral of San Salvador.
It is also home to the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, one of the four great schools of classical riding in Europe, and our primary interest.
We'll take a brief look around town, then enjoy the School of Equestrian Art, and their spectacular exhibition.
