Fox Glacier is a small town on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Bruce Bay is 46 km to the south-west of the township, and Franz Josef is 23 km north-east. State Highway 6 runs through the town. The township is 6 km from the eponymous Fox Glacier, and a similar distance from Lake Matheson.The population was 306 in the 2013 census, a decrease of 69 from 2006.Fox Glacier is primarily a service centre for tourists, although it also services the local farming community. The town is served by the Fox Glacier Aerodrome.

    Franz Josef Glacier / Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere is a 12 km long temperate maritime glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Together with the Fox Glacier 20 km to the south, and a third glacier, it descends from the Southern Alps to less than 300 metres above sea level.The area surrounding the two glaciers is part of Te Wahipounamu, a World Heritage Site park. The river emerging from the glacier terminal of Franz Josef is known as the Waiho River.
