Chinese Farmers Celebrates First Farmers Harvest Festival Across China
Chinese farmers across the country celebrated the first Farmers' Harvest Festival in their own ways on Sunday, the Autumnal Equinox.
In Chengde, a city in north China's Hebei Province, locals celebrated the festival together with visitors in such activities as appreciating rice paddy paintings, harvesting rice, threshing and catching crabs in rice paddies.
In a pool by the Hongze Lake in east China's Jiangsu Province, farmers celebrated the festival by holding a contest in harvesting the gorgon fruit, catching ducks in rice paddies, and catching fish from the pond with bamboo cages.
In the city of Liuyang, central China's Hunan Province, farmers have revived the tradition of sharing the fresh.
On Friday, in Yuquan Village in Liuyang, farmers along with people who came to search for their ancestors, sat by the same table, tasting 10 dishes and newly-harvest rice.
An once poverty-plagued village in northwest China's Gansu Province, harvest time means another round of tourist flow.
Fenghuang Village, about 10 kilometers away from the county seat of Jingchuan, Gansu Province, received about 70,000 visitors in the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, raking in 200,000 yuan (nearly 30,000 U.S. dallars) of income.
Two years ago, the poverty incidence in Fenghuang Village, whose population was 900, was as high as 30.54 percent. Inspired by a nearby county, which plants lavender to develop tourism, the village turned its low-yielding hills into a garden, a zoo and a water park and upgraded cave dwelling into hotels or centers for senior villagers.

Where do all those dead fish go?
A truck dumps a 2.2-ton load of dead-fish infested seaweed on Monday (9/24/18) at the Pinellas County Solid Waste Facility's landfill which was removed from Tierra Verde earlier Monday morning. The scenario is being completed around a dozen times each day as dead fish are loaded into bins that then get hauled to the county’s solid waste disposal plant. (Sept. 24, 2018) DOUGLAS R. Rural areas targeted ahead of annual online shopping boom
(10 Nov 2015) LEAD IN:
November 11 is Singles Day in China - the country's busiest shopping day of the year.
This year, online retailers in the country are looking to remote and rural areas in search of new customers.
Many rural Chinese have to travel long distances to reach shops and retailers are hoping Single's Day will help break sales records as the Chinese e-commerce boom expands into China's untapped countryside.
STORY-LINE:
Riding the waves of an e-commerce boom in China, the country's biggest e-commerce companies are on a mission to reach the country's most remote villages.
Known for farming crabs and growing water chestnuts, Mudun Island is a sleepy town of around 2,000 that sits in the middle of Hongze Lake in eastern China's Jiangsu province.
Until recently, for those who live here buying everyday items – cooking oil, laundry detergent and clothes - was a serious challenge.
But then Taobao came to town.
This June, local villager Tian Qianchun opened a storefront with the help of Alibaba - China's largest e-commerce retailer that runs the Taobao and TMall online shopping platforms.
Armed with a computer, a large-screen TV, and some sample products, he began offering help to locals to order what they needed from Alibaba's Rural Taobao platform – targeted specifically at the Chinese rural population.
Unlike most in China's cities, many villagers have still not moved online, and older generations typically do not know how to use a computer, let alone sites like Taobao.
So with the help of 26-year-old Tian, they get him to browse for goods online and have them delivered to his brick-and-mortar shopfront for pick up.
And in the six months since he began, Tian is not looking back.
He says he clears anywhere between 30 and 150 orders a day – more at weekends when the village children are home from school.
We bought our air conditioner, when we were refurbishing our house we bought air conditioners, TV – two TVs – rice cooker, stove top. We bought all of that through here, he helped us buy all of it, says Shi Caiyan, a 44-year-old villager browsing clothes online with Tian's help.
She adds: All the furniture in our house he helped us buy.
Before Tian opened shop, villagers would have an arduous journey by boat and bus to the nearest town, about an hour away. After shopping they would then have to carry all their purchases back with them.
Before this opened we would have to go the mainland to buy our stuff. In Bancheng town we'd have to take a boat first in order to get there. It wasn't convenient. This is convenient, and cheaper, says Caiyan.
The Rural Taobao service promotes products that villagers in rural China might need, like fertiliser, tricycles, and farming equipment.
The difference between the Rural Taobao platform and normal Taobao is that Rural Taobao is targeted at villagers and farmers, says Tian. It offers discounts to farmers. For farmers, price is key. Also the products on the Rural Taobao service are selected specially so they are better than the ones on normal Taobao. They are genuine goods at a fair price.
The Mudun Island centre is just one of 6,000 centres that has already opened across the country.
It's part of an infrastructure programme that began in 2014 and is costing Alibaba 1.6 (b) billion US dollars to set up.
They aim to create over 100,000 village-level Taobao centres and 1,000 county-level centres within three to five years.
Since opening, Mudun's Taobao centre has become a hub of social activity in the community.
Young mothers and babies, and elderly residents all sit and chat in the one-room store underneath a large screen that mirrors Tian's computer so villagers can see what he is looking at.

SUMMARY
=======
The Yellow River or Huang He (listen ) is the second longest river in Asia, after the Yangtze River, and the sixth longest river system in the world at the estimated length of 5,464 km (3,395 mi). Originating in the Bayan Har Mountains in Qinghai province of Western China, it flows through nine provinces, and it empties into the Bohai Sea near the city of Dongying in Shandong province. The Yellow River basin has an east–west extent of about 1,900 kilometers (1,180 mi) and a north–south extent of about 1,100 km (680 mi). Its total drainage area is about 752,546 square kilometers (290,560 sq mi).
Its basin was the birthplace of ancient Chinese civilization, and it was the most prosperous region in early Chinese history. There are frequent devastating floods and course changes produced by the continual elevation of the river bed, sometimes above the level of its surrounding farm fields.
