Florida's biggest hill! Summiting Sugarloaf Mountain
Alex and I decided to drive out to Clermont to climb Florida's biggest hill, known as Sugarloaf mountain. This would be a pretty average hill anywhere else, but we couldn't resist the novelty. Surprisingly it's almost a 15% grade in some places, and goes on for about a half mile. If you've been to Florida you'll find this pretty amusing.

If you spend enough time on Wikipedia, it’s easy to get sucked into the wormhole. Recently I came across a list of the biggest hills—in Florida. This is only interesting because Florida is known for being flat everywhere.
Alex and I set out to climb the biggest of these hills on our bikes, and naturally treated the whole endeavor like one big joke. The hill in this picture doesn’t look bad at all, but then again, nothing does on the screen of your iPhone.
Sugarloaf mountain is the most prominent point in Florida, at 245 feet above the surrounding land. The elevation at the summit is 312—hardly a snow capped peak, but still pretty unusual for the sunshine state. In fact, it bests the biggest hills in both Louisiana and Delaware.
I’ve shown videos riding the North Shore of Long Island New York, which is known for being hilly. Clermont is hillier than that in most places.
For some reason we decided to tackle Sugarloaf mountain in the wrong order, descending it first before climbing back up. Alex was wearing flip flops and had his arm in a sling, and I was on a 36 pound fat tire BMX.
That was a hill.
Those who live by the sword, must die by the sword. It was time to pedal this monster back to the summit.
The climb took about five minutes, and it wasn’t that bad, but we were still amazed. Imagine seeing a palm tree in Denver, or a snowflake in Miami. Imagine seeing a rabbi at a Nascar race. I guess what I’m trying to say is that some things are interesting because they’re unexpected. Sugarloaf mountain definitely falls under this category, and so does this whole area North of Orlando.
Naturally, you’d wonder if there are any bike trails around these parts, and there are. Mount Dora has trails, and so does Ocala, with over 85 miles of singletrack and a huge freeride section built in an old quarry. As for Clermont, many road cyclists frequent the area for year round riding and a little taste of elevation.
If you’re from Florida and you ride bikes, Sugarloaf mountain should be on your bucket list, just to say you did. As for Alex and I, it was worth the drive just for the laughs. We were definitely not expecting to see a legitimate hill in Florida. Thanks for riding with me today and I’ll see you next time.

Weird Abandoned 'UFO House' in Florida
THIS EERIE video and set of photos has given a glimpse inside an abandoned $1Million ‘UFO house’ in the sunny state of Florida.
Pictures show graffiti-covered walls and windows throughout the disk-shaped structure, while the video gives a step-by-step tour of the winding staircases and tight corridors.
Built in 1978 by Miami architect Peter Vander Klout, the structure was one of several similar buildings erected across the United States.
And photographer Bullet, who captured the footage on a recent visit to the site, says he hopes these images will help bring some attention to the unusually shaped house.

Skating The West Orange Trail to The Lake Minneola Scenic Trail
This slideshow of photos and videos spans slightly east of West Orange Trail's Killarney Station to the end of the Lake Minneola Scenic Trail and back (roughly 18 - 20miles)
Thus far, the West Orange Trail and Minneola Trail in combo comprise my favorite skate. There are some interruptions, but it is well worth it for the scenery and rolling hills where top speeds can be reached (I'm a novice...and reached 25-30mph).
At times, it's hard to believe you are in FL. The pavement is smooth throughout except for a couple areas of construction. The pavement around Lake Minneola is a bit gravely, but it is well lit at night (I haven't been at night, but street lights lined the lake)
Although this trail may sound a bit dangerous, I've somehow managed to skate 20+ miles on two separate occasions without adding to my collection of scrapes and bruises. The trail is popular, but not TOO popular (enough people to call 911 if you have a freak accident, but sparse enough as to not get into a situation where 911 is needed)
There are plenty of stops along the way...and GASP...an outdoor shower at Lake Minneola (important for the skating, couch surfing hippie on the go). This is only the second public shower I have found along-side a trail.
Take a couple hours and let any stress from your week dissolve...especially on speed skates!

Hickory Point - Florida - 2012
Back in the late 1940's, the planned 'Daugherty Estate' was reported to be one of the largest and most elaborate in Florida. A mile long canal was dug to connect the two lakes, Little Lake Harris and Big Lake Harris, both part of The Harris Chain of Lakes. These lakes will eventually take you to the ocean. The canal created an island or point, which was named Hickory Point. The canal, originally 10' deep and 20' wide, workman had to use dynamite to blast 78 cypress stumps in one area. A section of this property was preserved in its natural state. Included on the property was a rifle range, caretaker's cottage, a boat house, shop, barn, pump house, cabana and main house. The family still enjoys this beautiful place today. My sister Gail took the beautiful sunset photos.
