Idukki is one of the 14 districts of Kerala state, India, created on 26 January 1972. At that tie, the district headquarters was at Kottayam. In June 1976 it was moved to Painavu. Idukki which lies in the Western Ghats of Kerala. Idukki is the second largest district in area but has the lowest population density. Idukki has a vast forest reserve area; more than a half of the district is covered by forests. The urban areas are densely populated whereas villages are sparsely populated. Idukki is also known as the spice garden of Kerala.

    The Idukki Dam is a double curvature Arch dam constructed across the Periyar River in a narrow gorge between two granite hills locally known as Kuravan and Kurathi in Kerala, India. At 168.91 metres , it is one of the highest arch dams in Asia. It is constructed and owned by the Kerala State Electricity Board. It supports a 780 MW hydroelectric power station in Moolamattom, which started generating power on 4 October 1975. The dam type is a concrete, double curvature parabolic, thin arc dam.This dam was constructed along with two other dams at Cheruthoni and Kulamavu. Together, the three dams have created an artificial lake that is 60 km2 in area.     The Ponmudi Dam, in the Idukki district, State of Kerala, India, is a hydroelectric project constructed across the Panniar River, a tributary of the Periyar River which is the longest river in Kerala. Built in 1963, it has a length of 294 metres . The hydropower component of the dam has an installed capacity of 30 MW with firm power of 17 MW, generating 158 GWh annually.

    Kulamavu Dam is a gravity/masonry dam on the Periyar river. It is one of the three dams associated with the Idukki hydro electric power project in the Indian state of Kerala. The dam is situated on the Thodupuzha - Puliyanmala state highway , about 23 km from Idukki arch dam, 22 km from Cheruthoni dam and 38 km from Thodupuzha. The dams of Idukki, Cheruthoni and Kulamavu extend to an area of 33 km². The construction of these three dams formed a 60 km² artificial lake. The water stored in it was used for the production of electricity at the power house in Moolamattom.
