Northern Thailand is a very beautiful place alive with cultural history dating back thousands of years. The old Kingdom of Lanna centered in what is today Chiang Mai developed many special handicraft skills including hand loomed pieces of textile used to decorate cotton skirts for Lanna women. These skills have been past down through the generations and are highly prized by Lanna descendants (Northern Thai).
Deep within the mountainous regions of Northern Thailand also live many different and equally fascinating ethnic groups of people collectively known as the “Hill Tribes” or “Chao Kao” by the local Lanna-Thai people. These Hill Tribes consist of many different ethnicities including the Akha, Lisu, Lahu, Padang (Long Neck), Karien (Karen), Thai Yai, Yao and Hmong among others. Over thousands of years and through countless generations the Hill Tribe people of Northern Thailand have developed unique weaving techniques.
At Lanna , we take great pride in helping to preserve these traditional dying arts and the material identities of the Lanna Culture as well as the different Hill Tribe groups living in Northern Thailand.
