Taiwan episode 15 - Kinmen Jinsha township
Continuing the third day visit of Kinmen, this time in the east part of the island. Visiting an old village, with a lot of urbex since most of it is in ruins, and encountering a cinema crew that will block us to visit an important place of the village.
I hope you will enjoy as much as we did!

Nangan
Matsu’s largest island, Nangan is its cultural and political/administrative hub, and a very busy place compared to the rest of the archipelago.
Niujiao Village in Nangan’s northeast, once again flourishing, was one of the first to undergo a renaissance. Note how the homes’ granite blocks are in two shades, yellow and blue. The yellow are from Matsu, blue from Fujian; as a rough rule, blue meant you were more prosperous. Wulinggong Temple, above Niujiao’s harbor, has the bright orange-red exterior seen on many local temples. The color symbolizes flames; since already “on fire,” why would real fire need to visit? As with many homes, exaggerated vertical eaves are also supposed to help block sparks from nearby fires.
A 10-minute walk along the pathway that starts behind the temple takes you to the tip of the cape here, which is occupied by Stronghold No. 12 – not quite abandoned, for its two-floor command post/quarters has been “occupied” by “Thornbirds Book & Café,” an indie enterprise of great character that serves up splendid views of hilly Beigan to the north. The building is attached to such a steep rock face that you feel you’re hovering over the water rather than beside it.
Picturesquely filling up a mountain-backed niche of flat land behind a sheltered cove, compact, narrow-laned Jinsha Village in Nangan’s southwest is another imperial-era settlement now breathing strongly again, with new homestays and shops opening. One example is funky Matsu 1st Hostel, where cheap, cubicle-style single- and double-person rooms are offered. Housed in a true Matsu rarity, one of its east Fujian-style courtyard residences, beautifully restored, it’s one of four Nangan/Beigan youth-oriented homestays run by local entrepreneur Eddy Chuang (matsuhostel.com; Chinese).
The Iron Fort east of Jinsha Village, both on and inside a rocky outcrop in a small bay, once protected frogmen units. Narrow tunnels within lead to sniper slots, gun emplacements, quarters, and a kitchen. Outside, note the dog kennel. When tensions were high, PRC frogmen units staged night attacks, poisoning the guard dogs and taking human ears as trophies and proof of success. Many died in such lightning attacks over the years, here and elsewhere in Matsu.
Jinsha Site Museum, Chengdu
Jinsha Site was discovered in 2001 when some farmer workers constructed an avenue in Qingyang District, Chengdu. Its history can be dated back to late Shang (17th century BC - 1046 BC) and early Western Zhou (1046 BC - 771 BC) Dynasties and the early Spring and Autumn Period (770 - 476 BC).
According to the archeological findings, a great many precious relics including over 30 gold articles, 400 jade objects and bronze wares, 170 stone tools and 40 ivory carvings have been unearthed. One of the most representatives is the gold foil 'Sun Bird', which reflects the exquisite technical craftsmanship of the Ancient Shu people.
In 2007, Jinsha Site Museum was constructed to protect, study and display the site and its unearthed cultural relics. It includes the Relics Hall, the Exhibition Hall, Culture Relics Protection Center and the Garden Zone.
Yunnan Attractions
Yunnan is well-known for its breath-taking scenery. Ninety-four percent of the province is covered by mountains which are dotted with green woods and fragrant wild flowers. More than 600 rivers run through Yunnan, such as Jinsha River, Lancang River, Nujiang River and so on.
Yellow Catfish (& the Dark Corners of a Chinese Fish Market) // Chengdu: City of Gastronomy 51
This week I'm getting my feet wet in Chengdu's largest fish market. I'm exploring every corner, searching for ocean fish, and all the typical fish that are caught in Sichuan's rivers, including Huang Lading or Yellow Head Catfish. These little freshwater fish are what's for dinner this week, but I can't help be jealous of that giant salmon.
A warning, I may be exploring too deep as I witness a lot of unpleasant slaughtering. Frogs, turtles, giant salamanders, snakes, octopus, clams, oysters, shrimp - nothing's safe in the Green Stone Bridge Market (Qīngshí qiáo shìchǎng).
After an eventful day at the market, I hook up with Sara and we head to a country-style fish restaurant, where you select your dinner from a tank, and you eat it with whatever they happen to be cooking that day.
The card's full name is Xinjin Huang Lading Xinjin is actually a town southwest of Chengdu. It's famous for this fish. In fact, it's said that the fish was created there after a girl sacrificed her life by jumping into a river and transforming into the yellow catfish. It helped save the many villagers who were dying of malnutrition.
The Yellow Catfish might sit at the very bottom of the deck if I was ranking the dishes in this series, but it was still a great experience, and it showed me that not everyone was as lucky as me growing up. While I was throwing back fish that were deemed too bony or muddy, the Chinese were figuring out ways to cook the valuable protein.
HOW TO VISIT THE LARGEST SEAFOOD MARKET IN CHENGDU
Blue Stone Bridge Market, or sometimes translated as Green Stone Bridge Market, is called Qīngshí qiáo shìchǎng. Every taxi driver should know it.
The characters are: 青石桥市场
Map:
If you head there late at night, you can have a seafood feast on the sidewalk as they be serve up the seafood that they don't think will last through the night.
From around 2-4AM daily shipments come in. If you are up, head over to watch them unload the trucks.
WHERE TO GET YELLOW CATFISH IN CHENGDU
A favorite hotpot restaurant of Chengdu-ites usually has yellow catfish. It's a little far from the centre of the city, but it's worth the trip. You select your own hotpot ingredients, which makes it easier for non-Chinese speakers. Look for 黄辣丁 or just look for the fish as they're pretty recognizable.
Chuānxī bàzi
Map:
*If you are planning to go to Jinsha, the historical museum and archeologist site ( - head to this place for a meal after. It's just outside of the Jinsha rear entrance.
In this series, I am eating my way through a deck of cards. I bought a deck of food themed playing cards that feature a different Sichuan dish on every card. Every week I'll shuffle the deck and pick one random card to hunt down and sample. Chengdu was the first Asian city to be named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. It's full of incredible food - a lot of which you probably don't know about.
Subscribe below to follow along. Better yet, after subscribing hit the bell icon to get notified whenever I post a new video.
The weekly video will be posted every Thursday at 3PM EST until all 54 cards have been tried.
The International Traveler Challenge:Historic Charm
Edward and Jess’s itinerary took them hurtling further and further back in time, as they visited the Nationalist-Era Anren Town, the Chengdu home of Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu, and finally the 3000-year old Shu Kingdom ruins at Jinsha. Edward describes Chengdu as a “modern, fashionable city, a little different from what I had expected.” Jess raves about the various sites visited, praising the state of preservation of the various historical sites, which helped her to thoroughly enjoy her experience in Chengdu.
Taiwan Episode 9 - Wandering in Jincheng Township
Second episode of this 3 episodes arc (you should watch episode 8 first), after our lunch we visited the Kinmen Military headquarters of Qing Dynasty then explored a bit the old town.
This made us realize the pace of this island. Relaxing but rich. Since you are exploring with us I want you to experience this like we did, that's why I didn't put any music except for intro and outro. I hope you will like it!
Thanks for watching!
