Karviná is a city in Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic, on the Olza River. It is administrative center of Karviná District. Karviná lies in the historical region of Cieszyn Silesia and is one of the most important coal mining centers in the Czech Republic. Together with neighboring towns it forms industrial Ostrava-Karviná Coal Basin. It has 65,141 inhabitants . 8.5% of the population are Slovaks and 8% of the population are Poles. The Polish population has been historically declining. In the past the town had a significant German community. There is also a growing Romani community.

  • 4. Hukvaldy Castle Hukvaldy
    Hukvaldy is a village in the Czech Republic, in the Moravian-Silesian Region. Population: 1,900. It lies 150m below the ruins of the third-largest castle in the Czech Republic, Hukvaldy Castle , and is the birthplace of the composer Leoš Janáček and palaeontologist Ferdinand Stoliczka. The castle has been rebuilt at least five times over the last 700 years, evolving from a small early gothic castle to a baroque fortress. It was first built between 1260 and 1270 by Mr. Frank from Příbor. He was the son of the colonizer Arnold from the Huckeswagen family. When it functioned as a defensive structure the castle was never taken, probably because of its location and its massive fortress.
