Video Notes:
* Introduction to Excursions or Private Tours from Katakolon, Greece: *
The stop at Katakolon needs a tour for sure. There really isn’t much to do around the port. The only reason cruise ships stop here is for Olympia. I’m glad I got to see it because I would never fly to Athens and make the drive out to see Olympia, so this was a nice chance to see the things I read about in history books growing up.
I highly recommend a private tour company vs. any tours that you can book on the ship. Having your own private car and personal attention, especially on a short day like this one, was key.
Sights:
The first thing we did was see the archaeological museum. It would have cost an extra 130 euros if we wanted her to go in with us and explain everything we see.
I didn’t go to the olympic museum because we didn’t have enough time. Our tour guide told us that it was pretty boring because it’s basically just a rectangular ruin.
Hermes and the infant dionysus, by Praxiteles: this statue was discovered to be in very good condition in 1877. This statute is famous for being incredibly polished. Hermes is carrying the child dionysus to the nymphs who were charged with his rearing. The arm is missing, but they think he could be holding out a bunch of grapes for the child.
Nike of Paionios: This is an ancient statue of the Greek goddess of victory named Nike. It was originally on a pillar near the tempe of Zeus. This statue was installed to honor the recapture of Sphacteria from the Spartans in 425 BC. This is a statue of the greek goddness of victory which shows her gently landing on her left foot. This is where the brand Nike got its name.
The west pediment of the temple of zeus: this shows a big battle between centaurs and ancient Greeks. This was built around 460 BCE and it has 42 figures in total. It's crazy to see how well preserved it was and how emotional some of the figures are.
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was a giant Zeus sculpture on a giant wooden throne with gold, ivory, precious stones and ebony. Sadly it was destroyed over time, possibly by fire or looting.
The second part of the museum was a big open land where some of the ruins still stand. I can’t believe they allow you to walk into the ruins and touch them. We didn’t spend that much time here because it started pouring.
Palaistra: This was part of an ancient gym, and helped to train some of the wrestlers and other athletes.
Philippeion: was erected by Philip II, King of Macedonia after the victory of Chaeroneia in 338 BCE. Originally there were 18 Ionic columns and inside were gold and ivory statues of Philip's family.

Travel tips for the city of Athens!
From the Port, it takes 20 minutes to drive to the city of Athens. If you wanted to explore Athens on your own, it'll take 1 hour by subway or 40 minutes by bus.
I don't think that's worth it. I would probably take a taxi instead. It should cost about 9 euros each way.
Once you somehow get your way in Athens the city is really walkable. All the popular sites are pretty close to one another.
Because of that, after the tour I felt like I could have explored Athens on my own and saved the money. But I'll let you judge the experience. Our tour cost 95 euros/person.
Top Sights in Athens, Greece:
1) Acropolis
If the line is long, they also have another entrance in the south side that is away from the parking lot so it much fewer people. Tickets for Acropolis is 20 euros a person.
Once you get in it is a little hike up to the top of Acropolis.
Located on the southwest slope of Acropolis is this stone theatre built in 161 AD. This theatre holds 5,000 people and was used for music concerts.
2) Parthenon
The most famous building in the citadel is the Parthenon. It is a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena.
3) Erechtheion
This is a Greek temple on the north side of Acropolis dedicated to Athena and Poseidon. On the south side of the building is the famous Porch of the Maidens with six female figures as supporting columns.
4) Hadrian's Gate
It was built to celebrate the arrival of the Roman emperor Hadrian. It's kind of like the roman triumphal arches. It is made out of Pentelic marble. This is the same marble used for the Parthenon.
5) Temple of Olympian Zeus
Don't waste your money going into to see the Temple of Olympian Zeus as you can actually see it for free outside the gates. If you want to walk in and admire just how tall these pillars are the entrance fee is 6 euros.
6) Panathenaic Stadium
Next stop: This multipurpose stadium is huge! It is the only stadium in the world built entirely out of marble. It used to be built out of limestone. Marble was used in 144 AD.
7) Athen's White House
I'm here visiting the white house of Greece, but I haven't even visited my own country's White House. It was built in 1897 for Prince Constantine I. Now it is the official residence of the president of the Hellenic Republic.
8) Changing of the Presidential Guards
From here you can see the changing of the presidential guards. Like the guards, in London they also can't make any facial or eye movements and must not show any expression.
9) The Academy of Athens
This building is divided into three orders: Natural Sciences, Letters and Arts, and Moral and Political Sciences.
10) Plaka
Next stop: Plaka. It's an old historical neighborhood of Athens. It is known as the neighborhood of the Gods because it's really close to Acropolis and archaeological sites. The entire area is closed to cars. Plaka has a village feel, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with tiny shops selling jewelry, clothes and local ceramics.
