Kilquade, historically Killcowade , is a townland and a Roman Catholic parish in north County Wicklow, Ireland. It lies between Kilpedder and Kilcoole, about one kilometre east of Junction 12 of the N11 national primary route. It is part of the barony of Newcastle and lies within both the civil parishes of Kilcoole and Newcastle Lower. The Church, St. Patrick's, was rebuilt in 1802, refurbished in 2002-2003 and rededicated in 2004. Directly across the road from the Church is the National Garden Exhibition Centre.

1. Wicklow Mountains National Park Glendalough Village
The Wicklow Mountains form the largest continuous upland area in Ireland. They occupy the whole centre of County Wicklow and stretch outside its borders into Counties Dublin, Wexford and Carlow. Where the mountains extend into County Dublin, they are known locally as the Dublin Mountains . The highest peak is Lugnaquilla at 925 metres . The mountains are primarily composed of granite surrounded by an envelope of mica-schist and much older rocks such as quartzite. They were pushed up during the Caledonian orogeny at the start of the Devonian period and form part of the Leinster Chain, the largest continuous area of granite in Ireland and Britain. The exhibition contains over 20 permanent gardens each designed by some of Ireland’s top designers and landscapers. They are of varying sizes, styles and planting with something to suit most tastes. A must for anyone planning a new garden!

The Black Castle - Wicklow Town

This castle ruin stands on a rocky promontory over the sea, at the eastern side of the town. Following the arrival of the Norman’s in 1169 Earl Strongbow was granted the lands along the East Coast. He in turn granted those lands to Baron Maurice Fitzgerald on condition that he build castles for protection.

The Black Castle was constantly under attack from local Chieftains, notably those of the O’Byrne and O’Toole clans and in 1301 they succeeded in totally destroying the castle. There is a fine vantage-point for views over the town and the coast of North Wicklow from the ruins.

The coves of Dalkey and South Dublin

Last weekend I cycled out along the south Dublin coast, visiting the small coves clustered around Dalkey.

Constructed of old granite and relatively unchanged for ages past, on a sunny day they would make you think you were on the Med or somewhere.

Dalkey itself is also a great place. One of the few real 'villages' in the city that retains its own character. It is home to 3 old castles and serene main street. A great place to sit back with a coffee.
