Kharbi is a competition which criss-crosses all of Senegal. Its aim is to look for the most beautiful sheep. In order to find the prettiest sheep we have tried to come up with a set of rules. The criteria that we are looking for in the sheep are in particular their aesthetics, their measurements, the environment in which they live and how the animal walks.

The Kharbi contest has helped give sheep farming more public exposure, even though this breeding has always existed. There has always been competition amongst breeders, even if there was not a TV show about it. There has always been competition to choose the best and have them breed with ewes with the aim of making better selections and better animals.

One of the country's most popular TV series is an annual national sheep beauty contest that draws millions of viewers.
STORYLINE:
This is Kharbi - 'The Sheep' in Wolof - and it's one of the most popular television shows in the country.
Sheep from across the nation compete to be the best looking and best looked after in televised heats.
The winner goes through a grand finale which usually airs during the annual religious festival of Eid ul Adha, when millions of sheep and other animals are slaughtered in commemoration of the Old Testament prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son on God's orders. This year Eid ul Adha falls on October 26th.
Cash prizes are on offer to the winners, and sheep are assessed on a broad range of indices.
Last year's winner took away over USD 4,000 in prize money along with a vast supply of animal feed.

Bizzare Burial In Murang'a
Now, to a rather bizarre development, just how far would a family go to appease their dead kin? Well, a family in Gikomora village, Maragua constituency went as far as burying a live calf next to the grave of their 84 - year - old relative. This, they say, is to avoid a curse they insist would have followed them had they not conceded to his dying wish. Evelyn Wambui with the story of a family that refused to complete its dowry payment to a man in life, but which was forced to do so in death.
